Treatment For Pectus Ecavatum India

28 and just found out that I have pectus excavatum - is this dangerous?

Most of the time not dangerous and the defect does not change after full skeletal growth. Some patients with pectus excavatum experience chest and back pain that is usually musculoskeletal in origin. The exact cause of the pain is poorly understood. Pectus excavatum is frequently associated with scoliosis.

Pectus excavatum is not preventable, but the condition is treatable. In rare cases if the condition is left untreated, pectus excavatum can cause compression of the heart and lungs.

Mortality/Morbidity:

Most patients with pectus excavatum are asymptomatic from a functional standpoint. The degree of cardiopulmonary impairment caused by lung compression and the level of cardiac displacement that results from the caved-in chest are subjects of controversy. Exercise tolerance is frequently reported as normal, but a restrictive pattern in pulmonary function test results can be identified. Cardiac function is usually normal, but mitral valve prolapse has been reported in 20-60% of cases. Echocardiography reveals an improved cardiac index upon exertion after operative repair of the deformity. The long-term health risks of patients who are managed without surgery are not known.

Doctors usually recommend surgery only after the patient has reached mid-teens due to several past instances of younger patients having their chest buckle again post surgery. Although the cosmesis is a bonus benefit, the surgeries are carried out mainly for physiologic reasons, not for cosmesis.

Nuss Procedure Package Cost: 3,400 ~ 15,000 US Dollars in the US. Treatment in reputed & JCI-Accredited Hospitals in India are equally good but vastly cheaper.

Pectus Excavatum and boxing?

Not actually, and if you wear a vest nobody might realize. It might be wired to expose when you have to box shirtless which isn't usually the case in amateurs.
It depends on the extent of excavation if it's harmless and only an insignificant corporal defect or if it restricts cardiac function and has to be treated surgically. Most patients with pectus excavatum only suffer for cosmetic reasons, especially males if shirtless appearance is expected.

How do I join Indian army if I have Pectus Excavatum?

OK, so I had a cadet in my batch( SSB for CDS entry) who was rejected for the same reason. Initially give TR( temporary rejection), he was boarded out. This happened to him twice. He had tried for NDA and was medically unfit for same reason. He had told there that it is curable but involves a lot of risk, the reason he didn't undertake the surgery. He said he came to try his luck again. So the point is, you can be accepted only after a surgery which involves a gap of atleast a year between you having it operated and appearing for SSB :)P.S. He's now in IIM.

How do I expand my sunken chest (Pectus excavatum)?

Pectus Excavatum is a physical condition, right? Then you will have to use a physical medicine, not physical therapy, to reverse it. Think of how the costum (ribs) are shaped in a 1/2 circle, and are springy to expand and contract from the muscles of accessory breathing. If physically forced from birth or trauma at a young age, in at the chest, only Chiropractic Medicine can bring the Sternum back anterior. Not every Chiropractic Doctor knows how to do this. And it is not a total reconstruction, at once. But, you will have no added scaring and scar tissue to restrict you from your healing. It will be the most efficacious treatment you may ever try. Do ask everyone in a 50 mile radius, ‘Who is the very best Doctor of Chiropractic’. Do your preparatory work. If you do not see a noticeable improvement in 12 treatments, ask that Dr. who would do a better job?

I have pectus excavatum...how to tell girlfriend?

I have pectus excavatum. For those who don't know what that is, in a nutshell, it's a deformity of the chest, which it's basically caved in. You can find more information (and a picture here) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pectus_excavatum

Anyways, I met this amazing girl about 5 months ago, and we've been going strong ever since (I can tell she's a keeper). What's the best way to tell her about my condition? I don't want to scare her or anything, I just want to show her so she knows about it.

18 year old with Pectus Excavatum /questions?

Hey (:

My name is Omer, and I'm 16 years old. I had Pectus Excavatum too, before I had the surgery. I know what you feel.
Unfortunately, weight lifting and gaining weight will absolutely not help to make it less noticeable. Trust me, I've tried anything before doing this surgery. It won't work, it's just spending of time. I had the surgery a year ago, when I was 15. It is totally not an easy surgery, and you have to know that. There is a lot pain for the first 3 weeks. I was in the hospital for 10 days after the surgery.
I see the pictures, and it looks like a pretty deep dent.
Anyway, I strongly believe that you should do this "Nuss Procedure" surgery. There is a lot of pain only maximum for the first month, but that will totally change your life. Any second of pain worth the amzing feeling for the rest of your life! Trust me.
For you last question - It looke like a moderate-severe case. That's how I see it from the side pic (In front I couldn't even see it). It looks very alike to the dent that I had.
If you have any other question - ASK! I remember that I had a lot of questions before the surgery, so feel free to ask me whatever you want to know.
I wish you best of luck! (:

Can a student with mild pectus excavatum join MBBS course?

It depends on the the college that you’re planning to join.I have experience only about Indian Medical colleges and in India other than AFMC(Armed Forces Medical College), there is no stringent medical checkup done before joining the course.I’m a MBBS student of St. John’s medical college, bengaluru. During my admission they asked me to get a fitness certificate which basically stated my weight, height, eyesight etc.As of now all you need to do study hard and focus on your entrance exams and I’m pretty sure you’ll get in without any trouble. :)

I have Pectus excavatum and i would like to know how long my life span could be?

Studies reveal that patients have lived to 65 years or older and appeared to have died of causes unrelated to pectus excavatum, the oldest being 91 years. Twenty-one patients died between the ages of 14 and 65 years and were found to have coexisting conditions or syndromes. Six patients were between the ages of 1 and 4 years upon death. One of the 6 died in 1947 because of complications from pectus repair. No autopsied patient with pectus excavatum died between the ages of 5 and 14 years. Eighteen were infants younger than 1 year, and all 18 died because of conditions unrelated to pectus excavatum.

It is possible that you could pass on the pectus excavatum on to your children.

Don't know which country you are in, but insurance SHOULD cover this sickness.

If people make fun of you because of this, just ignore them. It just shows these people are ignorant to make fun of you.

You could have surgery or at least talk to a surgeon who does this kind of surgery to determine what your options are.

GOOD LUCK, and try to keep a positive outlook.

Girls, would it bother you if I had pectus excavatum?

Aww dude, I know you aimed this Q at girls but I wanted to give some kind words to ya here.

I don't really think it's much an issue really, I mean, anything thats a little different, people pick up on & in many cases ridicule it (cause it's not the same as theirs), it's the same thing with someone who's got any other kind of difference about them, however it's not a deformity, it's not even out of the norm or wierd, it's just probably not as common as say most, but I bet you'll find theirs mroe with it probably than you think.

Being with a girl either, it wont make a difference & I know that with the right girl, it'll be fine too, yeah you could get a girl who might be a bit of a ***** afterwards, but even then, people aren;t laughing at it as much as you think they are... they probably don't actually care that much, it's just human nature to be mroe conscious about yourself than how others see you.

One good thing though, whe you are with the right girl, you'll know, so in a sense it's a blessing in disguise.

But seriously, don't get down about it dude .... it's nothing really out of the norm, besides your only 20 (I looked on your profile to see if it says) & it will probably fill out in time too a little bit.

You'll be fine trust me, we all go through these negative thoughts & feelings about ourselves at times.

Chin up ... and dont give up hope cause it really is a small thing, infact it's nothing.
