Trying To Use Digital Tv As A Monitor For Desktop Computer. Vga Cable Not Working But The Cable

Using a computer monitor as a T.V?

I was thinking of getting a new T.V because mine is outdated and does not fit stuff well. I try adjusting the screen settings, but it only does so much. I was looking at newer T.V's, which are pretty pricey. However my friend told me about using a computer monitor as a T.V.
Where would be a good place to start?

I cannot find the right setting for my tv/monitor?

Unfortunately, you chose the absolute worst way to connect to a big-screen HDTV. S-video is capable of low-definition only. The images will ALWAYS look blurry if you use S-video. There is absolutely nothing you can do to improve it-- It is a limitation of the composited analog signal used by s-video.

The best way to connect a computer to a big-screen HDTV is through HDMI. HDTV HDMI can be connected to any computer that has a DVI port by using a DVI-to-HDMI cable. (Yes, DVI is compatible with HDMI). This is a digital signal and can support TV resolutions up to 1080p High Definition (1920x1080 resolution).

If the HDTV has a VGA port, it can be connected to any computer that only has an old VGA port, using a standard VGA monitor cable. Not as good as DVI/HDMI, but much better than that S-video garbage.

I'm also using a 52-inch big screen TV as my monitor, using a DVI-to-HDMI cable. I'm running 1920x1080 resolution and the images and text are razor-sharp. http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f347/a...

What does it mean when your computer displays a "VGA No Signal" message?

It means that the monitor is working but does not see the computer is turned on. The message means your monitor is working okay but is not getting a signal from your computer. The best thing to do is make sure your computer is powering on. Look on the back of your computer and see if you more then one video port on the back. They will look like the blue one or the white one. See if you have 2 of the blue or 2 of the white. If you do then move your monitor cord to other video port and see if it works or not.If that is not the problem then there is something wrong with your computer is not turning on or you have a problem that you are getting any video from your computer.

What are some reasons an HDMI to VGA cable might not work?

Greg is right - copy protection is the main reason an HDMI to VGA cable wouldn't work.A quick history of HDMI to VGA convertersWe sell a lot of different AV stuff, including HDMI converters. A few years ago we sourced and sold a product which (unbeknownst to us) stripped the copy protection. The reason is pretty simple - HDMI is a digital signal, VGA is analog; an analog display simply can't negotiate a handshake with a copy-protected source.A lot of people who like solutions like this are pirating content, but there are innocent applications also. The most common case is people who want to connect an AppleTV to an older TV that doesn't have an HDMI port.A legal representative Digital Content Protection, LLC (the company that manages licensing for the HDCP technology) was nice enough to reach out and let us know that this product was stripping the copy protection and we immediately fixed the problem by changing to a chipset that doesn't strip HDCP.HDMI to VGA converters todayWhich explains why most products in the market will not work when you are using a source that requires copy protection. We see small companies pop up from time to time selling infringing products, but they don't last long and the solutions are unreliable (they aren't always compatible with the latest version of HDCP).Btw, if your source doesn't require HDCP (it usually depends on where the content comes from - your digital video camera, for instance, most likely doesn't require copy protection on the output), then it's easy to find adapters which won't strip HDCP. These adapters won't show anything on the screen when a copy protected source is connected but work flawlessly with a non-protected source.

How do I connect a VGI out monitor to the HDMI input on my computer?

To clarify, a computer monitor has VGA out as only connection method.

I need it to connect the monitor to the HDMI port the back of my computer to use as a second screen.

The only available monitor output is VGA
The only available computer input is HDMI

I ve tried using a VGA to HDMI converter cord (link below)
Amazon.com: HDE 1080p HDMI Male to VGA Female Video Converter Adapter Cable for PC, TV, Laptops, DVD Players, and Other HDMI Devices: Electronics)

I learned that this might not actually be technically possible to work, given the direction I m going (Analog to Digital signal problem?)

So what is a solution that would work?
Do I need VGA to DVI, then DVI to HDMI (e.g. 2 adapters?)

Thanks in advance for your help!

XP will not detect second monitor for dual screen?

DVI and VGA are totally different signals

VGA is Analog
DVI is Digital

VGA-DVI adapter will not change that and it will not be recognized.

Does the Nvidia only have VGA output? Does your computers primary slot have VGA output. If so use those to connect 2 monitors if you have two VGA cables

Does the Nvidia have DVI and VGA and the monitor only have VGA input and that is why you are trying to hook second monitor to DVI port? Then it cannot be done this way you need a monitor with a DVI input port
