Twins Grow Slower Then Singletons

What happens when one of the twin babies dies in utero?

This is called a co-twin demise, and what happens mostly depends on when during the pregnancy it occurs.  If the demise happens early in the pregnancy, not much will happen.  The tissue of the dead twin will gradually resorb and usually be gone by the time the other twin is at term.  A co-twin demise in the first trimester doesn't appear to increase risks to the other fetus. In about 5% of twin pregnancies, one will demise after 20 weeks gestation.  When the twins are identical and share a placenta, there is an increased risk (~15%) that the other twin will also pass away.  This is for two reasons:  first, they share all their genes.  The underlying reason the first fetus passed away might be because of a genetic syndrome or other genetic risk factor that the identical twin also has.  Second, sharing a placenta with a demised twin can lead to anemia, low blood pressure, and/or restriction of blood flow to the living twin, which can lead to death.  This also increases the risk of neurological impairments in the surviving twin, so doctors might deliver the baby early if it was far enough along to be able to survive well on its own (probably about 32 weeks gestation).  There aren't clear recommendations for this, so the doctor and patient need to weigh the risks and benefits of continuing the pregnancy with these risks versus causing complications related to preterm delivery. For twins that do not share a placenta, the risk is much lower for the surviving twin to also pass away (~3%) or develop neurological impairments (~2%).  Since their placentas are separate, blood flow to the living twin is not impacted.  The slightly increased risk of loss probably reflects something about the uterine environment that is inhospitable in those cases.

Fast doubling HCG levels indicative of twins?

You are a little high for a singleton and a little low for twins, so it could really go either way. The median hcg level for a single baby at 19dpo is 786. The median hcg level for twins at that same time is 1271. The median hcg for a singleton at 24 dpo is 4417 and for twins it is 7395, so you are a little closer to the multiples range for that beta. Your doubling time is good and falls in the normal range for both singletons and multiples.

I had high betas for this pregnancy. In fact, my first beta at 16dpo was higher than the average for multiples, but it turned out to be one healthy baby. Then I know a woman who had a below average beta number for a singleton at 14dpo and she ended up carrying triplets! It is hard to tell sometimes. So you could very well be carrying twins or one early implanter who is growing very well. Both are good news!

Here is a great website for any beta questions. Check out the charts for singletons and multiples, and the doubling time charts if you want to learn more:

But Whether its twins or not, those are great numbers!

Good luck with your pregnancy.

When did your baby start wearing size 12 month clothing? And for how long?

My Daughter was born at 40 weeks and was 10lbs 15.4oz and 21.5 inches long!!! She wore 12 months at about 7/8 months and 18 months at 9/10 months. she is now almost 11 months and into 18 months but we got her 24 months for the summer!!! She is currently 23 lbs!! She has been on the bigger size all her life. I would think your daughter will be MUCH smaller, my friend has an 16 month old who barely fits in 12 months!!! I would not buy anything for spring or summer untill a bit closer to the time because you never know if she will have a growth spurt!! My daughter was in 6 months clothes and so I got 9 month stuff for winter, well she had grown out of all that before Fall even started!!!! lol. Good luck and Congrats on your "little" one!! ;) Oh and she wore size 3 shoe in the fall and now is size 4!! But she has a big foot since I do!!

Could a twin be hiding?

I went for my first doc appointment when i was only 4 weeks pregnant..at that time my doc did an exam and he said i measured 10 weeks pregnant, this is not my first pregnancy, so he sent me for an ultrasound which i got when i was 7w 3d and the ultrasound tech said my baby has a healthy hearbeat of 161 and she looked really quickly for another and said only 1. Now This is my 4th pregnancy and I feel really different, i feel ALOT pregnant, im at night to pee more, im very tired, im outta breath ive gained 8lbs already and im only 10 weeks and im obviously bigger, i never expected twins with any other pregnacy but just suspected it this time for all these reasons. Is there any chance that one could of been hiding in my ribs or something??? and the ultrasound was a vaginal are those as accurate as regular ones and dosent 161 seem a lil high for a fetus heartbeat??

Question about running while pregnant with twins, help?

No. You need to discuss your level of activity ASAP. Carrying twins is a hard pregnancy, from the beginning of the pregnancy, even if you are in great shape and haven't had any problems with your other pregnancies, you are considered high risk. When they say high risk they mean for preterm labor, gestational diabetes, pre-eclampica, still born, bed rest, bed rest at the hospital, one baby not getting as much nourishment as the other. The human body is not equipped to carrying two babies at one time, that is why it doesn't matter what your body was before the pregnancy.

I didn't have one inch of fat on my body when I first got pregnant with my twins and was very active, but even though I was very active and I was on bed rest my 7th week to my 13th week, partial bed rest from 21-29 weeks, and full bed rest by my 30th week for various reasons. I delivered at 34 weeks from preeclampica. Even before I had pre-eclampcia one of the twins wasn't getting getting as much nourishment and was behind on developing. They told me if she had not caught up to her brother in one week they would deliver. Luckily she caught up with her brother but at 34 weeks I delivered because I was eclamptic.

I knew a lot of these "super mommy" people that were carrying twins in our local moms of multiples club. Like they had something to prove. All you need to prove is doing what is right for you and your babies.

There was a great book that I got off Amazon that was called, When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets, or Quads: Proven Guidelines for a Healthy Multiple Pregnancy. This book became my best friend during my pregnancy. I highly recommend getting a copy or getting it on your Kindle. Another thing that really helped was getting into a local moms of multiples club. The can ease your mind when your having troubles and do know what to do.

At what point during pregnancy is the growing baby an individual human being, and why?

At 20 weeks, you’re halfway through your pregnancy. You will probably feel your baby move for the first time when you’re around 17 or 18 weeks pregnant. Most first-time mums notice the first movements when they are between 18 and 20 weeks pregnant. At first, you feel a fluttering or bubbling, or a very slight shifting movement, maybe a bit like indigestion. Later on, you can’t mistake the movements and you can even see the baby kicking about. Often you can guess which bump is a hand or a foot. You may develop a dark line down the middle of your tummy and chest. This is normal skin pigmentation as your tummy expands to accommodate your growing bump. Normal hair loss slows down, so your hair may look thicker and shinier. You’ll be offered an ultrasound scan when you are 18 to 20 weeks pregnant — this is to check for abnormalities in the baby. Your midwife or doctor can give you information about this and answer any questions.

Hey, what is a half twin?

A half twin would occur if a woman had sex with two different men within a very short time of each other, and the woman was ovulating, produced two eggs, and sperm from the men each fertilised one of the eggs. Rare, but not impossible. When born, they would be fraternal twins (i.e. being conceived from two different eggs), have the same mother (obviously), but different fathers. Hence, half twins.

When your pregnant with triplets questions?

First of all, congratulations if you are having triplets!!

1: It's sometimes hard to say what causes one or more fetuses to not survive the whole pregnancy. Living and eating healthy is never a bad thing, but they are no guarantee for all three to survive.
2: It can be either way, it depends on how the triplets were conceived.
3: Theres no way to tell, but probably with triplets you would have a c-section. Just to be safe.
4: This depends on how they were conceived.
By this i mean, it could be, 3 eggs in one ovulation all got developed into a fetus, resulting into three non-identical children, or, 2 eggs, one split after conception into two (like it would happen with identical twins) and one stayed intact, resulting into two kids very identical and one looking different, or one egg split into three after conception, which would result in an identical triplet.
5: No, it's kind of a fairy tale that you'd have to eat for 2, or in the case of triplets, 4. You probably will need to eat much healthier and take some supplements.
6: The babies in case of triplets will typically all be a little smaller than when just carryong one child. But you still probably will be alot bigger than average.
7: I think not.
8: i answered this one at question nr 4
9: I know no-one with triplets but i am one of a set of twins and we did kind of run the same schedule but we also had our own little things.
