Type Of Storms In Beijing

What was the air quality like in Beijing in the 1990s?

air quality wasnt on many peiple’s mind until the mid-2000s. hardly anyone knew what PM2.5 means and I dont remember seeing air quality monitor on weather reports.there could have been some hazy days but not often enough to give a lasting impression. but I do remember the sand storms and coal dust.sand storms usually come in springtime. wind would pickup, the sky would turn light yellow in a matter of a few minutes. you could smell the dust in the air, and it would get in the eyes and mouths. during the bad ones you would have trouble breathing without a scarf or mask. afterwards there would be a layer of fine sand dust everywhere.it comes and goes quite quickly, in a couple of hours. happens around once or twice a month iirc.coal dust is a different matter. Beijing’s residential heating was provided entirely by burning coal. there were a few dozens of large scale heat plants all across the city, burning 24/7, and homes without central heating pipeline would have coal heaters and chimneies. there is no escaping from it. you could constantly see those flatbed tricycles transporting coal in the city. i remember we had to clean our window ledge every week or so during winter, and there were always a thin layer of black dust. the air would be bone dry, you could smell the coal quite easily.construction was absolutely everywhere. buildings, roads, bridges, a whole lotta exposed earth giving out dust all day long.there wasnt that many cars however. but the buses always had black exhaust and bad smell of diesel.in general i think the city was pretty much a giant dust bin. it is a lot cleaner nowadays. sand storms are almost completely gone, and no more coal burning in the city. fewer construction sites and are much better covered.Beijing has changed from clean sky dirty street, to dirty sky clean street.

Why is Beijing always hot?

From my understanding, Beijing is located in a vale, which means compared to the surrounding areas, it is somewhat lower. This means that unless the wind is blowing (which it can occasionally), the air doesn't move as much (which also explains why the pollution sits on the city). In the summer, this results in creating a pocket of heat, but also keep in mind that you have ~24 million people in the city sweating, talking, and generating heat as well. This will increase ambient environmental temperature. In the winter, the city will be cold when the pollution and cloud cover are gone, but when pollution or clouds are here, Beijing winters tend to be somewhat warmer. For me, I walk around in shorts all the time.

What is the best city between Beijing and Shanghai to live in for six months and study Chinese there?

Well, I really can say answer for this question is Beijing. There are two aspects you have to concern, one is the environment, here I means the weather or live quality. The other one is to study Chinese. The problem that cause air pollution is because of the metallurgical factory competition in Hebei province, for a useless chance to be famous. During the G20, the government suspended them for producing metal product for 7 days and the air quality has no difference with Tibet. Also the desertification of Inner Mongolia is getting more serious ever. Some farmer tracing for more lands to grow but not to plant tree to prevent soil loss, causing sand storm every single year. And Beijing is not part of the coast, so Beijing has a lot of disadvantages in this aspect. For people born in Northern China, it's pretty hard for us to understand what people in Southern China saying, because the words they use is way tooooooo much different with standard Chinese. And we know that if we say CHINESE is a language, that's refers to Mandarin for sure. Which city has the most people using Mandarin to communicate? Undoubtedly Beijing is. I can't judge all the people born in Shanghai but as what I communicate and feel about people born in Shanghai, I don't quite like this city and its people. But people born in Beijing( why I don't just use Beijingers or Beijingese because too many of people from China except Beijing, come here and live here, many of them don't treat this like their hometown but just a place, they don't love this place and do a lot of things that are prohibited in cities with big populations. We don't call them outlanders or strangers, we call them using a curse word, but just for the people destroy here.)Also I can assure you, people from northern area of China are more hospitality that southern area. No offense but it's true and I said this is the average, don't complain about me “you attacked on us” or what, it's true.In Beijing you can try a lot of food from all over the world and more places to go if you are fond of shopping or feeling the culture. Trying to go with your new friend but not go with a tour group, they are just some outlander seeking for money and treat you differently after you pay your money before trip get started.

Which city is better, Shanghai or Beijing?

I have live in each city for three years

Shanghai is clean, modern, transportation is better, skyline is better, people do not stare and point as much as Beijing, fashion, finances, truly international, all around it is a better place to live

Should I wear a mask when I go to Beijing?

I am very grateful to answer the question!Of course ! For your lungs, mask is necessary. During the last two weeks, there has been two dust storm usual in the season in Beijing. Like what western countries have experienced, air pollution caused by overquick industrial development policy is plaguing China.I come from Hubei province, a central south province of China and when I came to Beijing four years ago, I feel very bad because of the dirty air. Thus, I have had pimples for around three years. If you want to come to Beijing now, it will be helpfu that you prepare some masks. But I firmly believe that everything will improve. I advice you to come to Beijing four or five years later and you will love the vibrant and clean city. It's all. Thanks!

What is weather like in Beijing, China?

Winter: early/mid-October - early/mid April, -20 degrees, cold, dry, might snow once or twice. Quite windy from February - March.Summer: early/mid April - early/mid October, 35 degrees, hot, humid, torrential downpours every few days in July and August but little rain in other months.Spring & Autumn: the mere few days in between Winter and Summer, mild, pleasant, 20-25 degrees.Throughout the year the skies are generally grey with choking smog from the factories and dust from the desert limiting visibility to a few hundred metres. It gets increasingly worse over the course of 15 days or so when suddenly you might wake to a gorgeous clear blue sky. The next day the smog and dust starts to creep back in.During the summer storms the sky can go completely dark in the middle of the afternoon, and you might be treated to a fantastic and violent clash of lightening. This usually abides after about an hour. Beware that the city has little drainage so a heavy downpour inevitably causes flooding. The city used to get quite horrific sandstorms in the Spring but it's very rare these days.

Have you ever been to Beijing, China? What's it like?

Welcome to Beijing - my hometown!

Compare to the US, things are much cheaper in Beijing, however, if you are going this August, that would make a big difference. The price of the hotels increased dramatically and they will sold out pretty quick because of the Olympics. But you will enjoy the good price any other time while in Beijing.

For the sightseeing in Beijing, I can help you! Other than don't miss the must-sees, like the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven those iconic landmarks that you don't want to regret for not visiting, we also arrange experiences on the less beaten paths.

For example, you can visit the Simatai section of The Great Wall, which is much less touristy, more original looking with the challenge (i.e. risky) of climbing on this un-restored section. Another highlight is Hutong Tour in Beijing where you will take the rickshaws to go deep into the old town Beijing and talk to the really locals face to face! You can also get chance to visit a local farmer's house and have a real close look of their life! There are simply many choices depends on your time and interest.

Actually I have clients who have the similar situation as you do: have some sightseeing locally during their business trip, and we create customized tours for them. If you like, I would be more than happy to discuss and work out with you a unique travel itinerary and help arrange the tour. My company specializes in customized tours to China.
