University Marks Not The Best Help

Transferring from a California Community College to a New York University?

LIU is an expensive private university. Its Brooklyn campus admits fewer than half of the transfer applicants.

You might look at various four-year campuses of the City University of New York. They have relatively low out of state tuition fees. I do not have information on their transfer admission acceptance rate.

If getting a good education for a low cost is important to you, apply to Cal State Dominguez Hills. It admits over five out of seven transfer applicants. Take advantage of instate tuition and move to New York after college. The money you will save on tuition fees will be enough to get you started in expensive New York.

Why is it so difficult to get good marks in the Calcutta University?

When I was a mere undergrad, trying to cope with the horrors of doing an honors in Physics from Calcutta University, for a brief period, I had a young professor of Economics as a neighbor. He loved Vodka and every day he'd have a peg or two of his favourite Magic Moments before going to bed. He would call me every evening, inviting me to share a drink with him which I would invariably decline politely.One fine weekend, I decided to give in to his whims and joined him for that elusive drink. So there we were, enjoying an absolutely gorgeous Calcutta evening on the terrace of our building, over vodka, kebabs, peanuts and cigarettes when I finally popped him this very same question."Sir, Calcutta University te number pawa eto shokto kano ektu bolben? Could you please tell me why it is so difficult scoring in Calcutta University?"The professor looked at me and put down his drink, took a long drag of his regular Goldflake cigarette and blew a steady stream of smoke deep into the starry Calcutta sky.And then he sighed, lost in thought. "Achha khoka shuno. When we evaluate papers, we keep 50% of the marks with us. We are given strict guidelines not to be liberal and just throw out marks like crazy.""Wait, whaaaaaaaatt?" I asked, shocked. "You're telling me that we are basically evaluated out of 50 and not 100?""Yeah, exactly!" he continued nonchalantly, as though he was discussing a common everyday topic. "We with hold 50% of your marks and if you're really exceptionally good, we start giving out marks from that 50% little by little. There are no step-wise marks. If you get it right, you get full marks, or else, a big gulla!""That's not fair," I protest."I know! Even though the answer key we are given does have step marks, but none of us really give a shit about that," the Professor explained. "In short, if you're not brilliant, tor g**d maara jabe!""But why all this nonsense!" I demand, visibly upset and angry!"Propaganda khoka, propaganda!" He exclaims, throwing his arms in the air. "You are in "Calcutta University" and there is some "status" associated with it. Baaler status, if you ask me! Just because some big shots graduated from here, we need to project ourselves as guardians of an age old center for excellence! Baaler excellence, baara!""So, we're basically fucked!" I heave a heavy, dejected sigh.The Professor nodded, "yes, you are indeed!"

Do Canadian universities look at your grade 11 marks?

I know how you feel. I also just finished grade 11 and my marks are less up to standard than I hoped.

I have spoken with both university reps and guidance councilors about this and the following is the general impression I got;

Grade 12 marks are by far the most important factor for most academic universities in Canada. The university makes it's decision based on your grade 12 marks, but also have access to your grade 11 final marks (yet not access to midterm marks)
Grade 11 marks only come into play really if a student is on what university reps call the "near the cut-off" which means their marks are close to the minimum standard for acceptance (these being their grade 12 marks). At this point grade 11 marks may be considered, but the good thing is they are impressed with improvement.
So to conclude NO! Universities will not take a major look at grade 11 marks.
As long as you do well in grade 12 you will be accepted! Good luck!

Can I get into McGill University? In Canada?

In Canada, they really only look at your marks, not your extracurriculars or anything like that unless you're on the edge of being accepted/not accepted. For example, if you have a 90% admission average, you can get into pretty much any university and program you want. I'm pretty sure that they don't do the whole "weighted" average/GPA thing either. So in other words they don't really care if you took harder courses, they only look at the final marks.

Of course, if you're applying for a special program that is very limited in the number of people accepted (for example, a first year program like Science One at UBC), then they would also look at other factors, like EC activities, references, application essay, etc. But if you're just looking to go into Faculty of Science or whatever, then it is really not that competitive. However, for scholarships, things like that are important. Also, McGill doesn't have a specific premed program except for CEGEP (Quebec) students. You would just have to take courses and choose a program that would prepare you for med school.
