They do an excellent job, given that most of the times they don’t see a 3D character to start with. Of course, there is always more than one pass from a voice actor and also when there is a change in dialogue (as decided by the director/script writer), voice actor has to dub again. Should I watch anime dubbed in English or in Japanese with English subtitles? Does watching with English dubs really lose that much? If I watch in Japanese with English subs, how annoying is it to divert my attention to the bottom of the screen?
It really depends on the Anime itself and how they want to portray the characters vocally. I prefer sub over dubbed due to the context as well as the ability of the voice actors to make it more interesting for me to watch. Also the subbed version is not as censored as a dub version would be, which is usually more fun to watch in general.I have watched a couple of series dubbed and they aren't too bad and actually were better than the subbed versions. I watched golden boy in both dubbed and subbed and thought the dubbed version was better (recommended by my cousin). The character was portrayed better in the dubbed version. Also Dragonballz I watched on American TV before I even knew it was an Anime and watched a little bit of it subbed and thought the dubbed version was a little better (probably because Goku sounded like a girl).I would say check out a couple of episodes of both versions and see which one you enjoy more. Get a feel for the character and for which version portrays it the best. I also agree with Devlin Francis that it is really about the way they translate the story in the dubbed version and the subbed versions. Why do people hate English dubs of anime so much?
@No Lies, Just Love: I did not mean to wrangle your panties in a knot, and yes, your opinion is respected by me to an extent. But I will address all of your lettered points. A: Alright, fair enough. B: That can be understandable and I feel that quite a lot in shows too, but that is where I prefer Japanese. C: Yes, there are tons of horrible pronunciations in English dubs of anime, but that's the same as when in a Japanese dub the VA's try to speak in English and it comes out badly. No one criticizes them for their mispronunciations, so we should not be racked either as native English speakers to mess up on Japanese words at times. Also, Japanese is a faster language and it would sound out of place to say some of their names faster than the words they are speaking. Why do so many anime fans hate anime dub so much?
I personally like both sub and dub versions of animes. The reasons I hear for people hating dubs is: 1."The voices don't sound natural compared to the Japanese." 2."The english voices dont fit the character" 3."The translations are wrong" 4."They pronounce some of the names wrong" 5."English voice acting is terrible" There are more, but I dont want to get deep into it. Whenever my friends, or cousins, and I talk about anime, they will always bash on dubs, saying all anime dubs suck. I think their reasons are pretty weak. Depending on the series, I try to watch some of them in english dub. I see no point in arguing with them, since they are so narrow minded, and they just stick with their belief that almost all anime dubs suck. 1. How would you know if the voice fits the character or not, that is a matter of opinion, since I find some dubbed voices to fit well with the characters, such as Goku or Ed Elric. 2. Why do they always compare. Dont they realize the effort into make a dub anime. Its like converting shows like MLP FIM and Adventure Time from english into japanese dub. 3. English voice acting is pretty damn good. This is evident in games like Uncharted, The Last of Us, Metal Gear Solid, Assassins Creed, Mass Effect and more. And even shows like MLP FIM, Adventure Time, Avatar the Last Airbender, and Teen Titans. Yes, I agree that there are plenty of bad dubs, but that doesn't mean that all dubs are bad. Im a fan of both sub and dub, but I don't complain about about bad dubs either. I understand that some people prefer watching a sub over a dub, since its mostly preference, but that doesn't mean they have to hate dub with a passion. So why do anime fans hate dub so much?
Why do people hate English dubbed anime?
Everytime I'm on YouTube watching some anime there's always someone who complainsabout how bad the English Dub is. I've been watching anime for most of my life since I was 3 watching anime in the U.K. then in the U.S. so I grew up with English dub anime. I like the original Japanese dub but I have a preference for the English dub. But why is it so panned. That's something I don't like people complaining about it when its obvious its English.
