Upgrading Ssd Without A Fresh Install

How can I transfer a windows install to an ssd?

My workplace purchased 5 Acer E15 laptops, along with 5 compatible m.2 ssds. They've asked me to clone the windows install over to the SSDs they purchased. I have found some tools online that claim to do so for a fee, but I would rather find a functionality within windows, or the bios, that can do it instead. I have found a few articles online that instructs re-installing windows to the ssd from the disc, then formatting the HDD, but having no disc, would that route be possible?

Can upgrading a HDD to a SSD change your mac address?

I have a hp mini netbook with windows 7 starter. I recently replaced the HDD with a ssd and now I can not connect to my router. I thought the mac address was linked to the actual hardware such as the network adapter so i thought the HDD replacement wouldn't effect my connection. I made sure that the network adapter had the same drivers that it previously had but the router will still not accept the mac address and I would add the new mac address to the list in the router but I dont have access to the settings page any ideas thanx

Can I install Windows 10 from my HDD to the M.2 SSD without losing all my data?

As Damian mentions in his answer you want to backup all your data before you attempt this operation. You also need to verify that your motherboard supports booting from the M2 port, but it is likely that it won’t be a problem. Then, you want to upgrade your drivers for your M2 device before you attempt to migrate the installation. This is important, and is not as straightforward as it should be. There are instances where to get the best performance you need to use drivers provided by the drive manufacturer as opposed to the ones built into Windows. Finally if you have all the pieces in place, you can use a piece of software like Acronis Disk Director to clone the mechanical disk to the SSD. If you purchased a Samsung M2 device, then Samsung has disk cloning/migration software available from their website, and Kingston provides SSDNow software if you purchased an upgrade kit which includes adapters/cables for performing the upgrade. Western Digital provides a downloadable copy of Acronis True Image to perform the disk migration. Seagate has the DiskWizard utility that can be used to clone disks.

Installing Windows 10 from old hard drive to new SSD.?

It's easy. All you need is the media creation tool. Here is the Microsoft link for it

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software...

Scroll down to the second (+) [using the tool to create installation media] and click that one for the actual instructions. You just need to download the media creation tool (that button link is at the top of the page) onto the installation media of your choice (USB, DVD, etc)and then install it. The actual instructions of how to install it once you get it downloaded are at the (+) that follows steps 6 [using the installation media you created].

The whole process is very easy. This is how anybody would reinstall Win 10 on either the same hard drive OR a new hard drive.

Install windows 10 to SSD from Hard drive?

Disk cloning is an option but only if the storage requirements match up. If your HDD has more stuff on it that than SSD can store then cloning isn't the answer.

Best idea is to simply upgrade your current Windows 7 install to Windows 10. Get the download tool, create Windows 10 install media on a USB stick. Run the setup program from the stick while you're in Windows 7 to start the upgrade.

Check that Windows 10 is activated once the upgrade is finished. Disconnect your HDD and connect your SSD. Boot from your USB stick and clean install Windows 10. You won't need to enter a product key so leave any product key fields blank and click Skip or Next. Windows 10 will install and activate automatically. If the OS looks good then you can turn off your PC and reconnect your HDD, copy over any files from the HDD to the SSD then format the hard drive.

How do I clone large HDD to smaller SSD without issues?

I assume you want to upgrade your hdd withan ssd after fresh windows 10 install. If your PC is adesktop, I suggest you clone your hdd to ssd with a free backup and restore software, such as AOMEI Backupper. As long as your ssd have enough space forthe data on the hdd it will work flawlessly. If your ssd does not have that much space, you can slim your HDD by removing data to another storage device or use system clone to only migrate your operating system(OS) to the SSD instead.s

I'm upgrading to an SSD. Would it be okay to keep the OS on the old HDD and also have it on the SSD?

Assuming you have say Windows 7 on the old hard drive (it could be Windows 10, that’s irrelevant) just unplug the HDD and install Windows on the SSD. Once the installation is complete, and you plug the old HDD back in, your PC will always boot to the SSD.Then download and install AOMEI Partition Assistant (or any drive management utility) and repartition the HDD and fence off the old OS with a partition that is maybe 30GB larger than what is already on the drive. Make one or two more partitions with the space you have freed up, and use them for media storage, downloads, and low priority apps.If anything ever happens to your SSD, you can then unplug it from the system and your PC will boot to the previous OS, allowing you a potential backup so you will be able to continue using your PC.

Clean install windows 8 on SSD Drive (Laptop)?

So i installed a Samsung 250gb 840 SSD on my Asus s200e netbook.

But i've run into an issue; obviously the laptop didn't come with a windows 8 cd/usb or product key despite it been pre-installed onto the original HDD.

So i created a UEFI bootable usb with the windows 8 iso on it. This worked fine but it says it's in 'evaluation' mode and valid for 90 days. I used Belarc Advisor to pull the product key and used the cmd: slmgr.vbs -ipk "product key here"

Which 'activated windows'. But i dont know if the product key is that of the evaluation version or not, i was under the impression the product key was tied in with the UEFI?

This is rather irritating. I had formatted windows 8 on the original drive because i was messing around with ubuntu and debian; so i have no access to the pre-installed version.

How exactly am i meant to do a clean reinstall of windows 8? If the key is tied in with the UEFI then wouldn't it just pull the product key from there when installing.. im not sure why i have the 'Evaluation Version' unless i've downloaded the wrong iso..

Thanks for any help.

I'm building a new PC. Can I upgrade my OS to windows 10, transfer it to an SSD and move to my new PC?

Short answer, no.(Not with the free upgrade version of Windows 10, only with a retail key)The free upgrade only works on the hardware it was first activated on.Windows 10 is different to how previous Windows versions worked in terms of activation and cloning drives to move a Windows install to a different computer. The activation of the free Windows 10 upgrade is linked to your motherboard. You can upgrade all the other parts of your computer, and the activation will be ok.But if you need to replace your motherboard, you will need to contact Microsoft to explain the situation, as Windows will see your computer as being different hardware and wont activate automatically. If you try to move an existing activated Free upgrade of Windows 10 into a new system, with a different motherboard, you will not be able to activate it, and need to purchase a new license. If you purchase a retail copy of Windows 10, you are able to transfer it between motherboards ok, but can only have one license per machine at a time.More info is here. The only way around this, is to purchase a copy of Windows 7/8/8.1 and install it on your new system, then upgrade it to Windows 10 before July 29th.
