What does an upside down American flag mean?

It is a call for help...like an SOS or a Mayday.

However, some people in the United States fly their flags that way simply to be disrespectful and offensive. For these, I hope that there is a special level of Hell.

Why is there an upside down American flag at the end of the new Johnny Cash CD commercial?

an upside down flag signifies the flier is "in distress"

Why is the American flag sometimes hung upside down?

According to the U.S. Flag Code:§176. Respect for flagNo disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America; the flag should not be dipped to any person or thing. Regimental colors, State flags, and organization or institutional flags are to be dipped as a mark of honor.(a) The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property. So it is to signal that you are in distress.

Why are people offended by the upside down American flag?

It used to be that flying the flag upside down was a call for assistance of the last resort. Flying it when it is not is a bit of a boy who cried wolf type scenario. It angers some people a little and a very few people a lot. Select few of those will knock your lights out.We live, here in US, in a nation of 330 million people. 330,000,000 individuals. Some are right and some are wrong. Some have a giant chip on their shoulder. Some watched their buddies die in Vietnam or Iraq or somewhere else. Others still say and do things in attempt to illicit a reaction from others. With all of these people bouncing around using freedom to the last degree of their measure - trouble is bound to happen. If we can prevent actual loss of life due to it we are doing well.It is like the old saying goes. Eventually if you knock on the devils door long enough, someone is going to answer. You can fly any flag you want in your yard, its your yard, but expect some angry people if you fly certain flags. You know the ones I speak of. If you make 1000 people angry - 900 will just shrug and keep moving. 90 might yell at you. 9 might approach you and get in your grill about it. 1 is liable to go to blows over it. Try not to make 1000 people angry. This increases with the number of people you make angry, while you do have the right to hate speech (SCOTUS ruled on this) you also have the right to reap the consequences both legal and otherwise for your hate. This truism flies both ways, left and right. When you let people get you angry you let them win a little. Recognize that people have freedom to offend and if you ignore them they lose a little. If enough people ignore them they go home and have their mom warm up some hot pockets for them. I do not get too wrapped around the axle about flag mistreatment, I disagree with it like most people do, but if you get bopped for doing it out in the street I figure you were messing with the bull and now you get the horns. Maybe, next time, you will reign it in a touch and not mess with the bull.

Hanging the U.S. Flag upside down?

It's from naval tradition, before radios. Putting your national colors upside down gave passing ships a signal that you were in trouble. It still is method of distress, if your radio is not working.

Political statements, like any other expression, is a First Amendment right. If someone wants to do it, that's fine with me. Of course, you might get the local Coast Guard knocking on your door to see if you have a problem.

If I turn the American flag upside down on the flagpole in my yard will the police ask if everything is okay?

“The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property. Most individuals who have served in military service of our nation should recognize this signal.People ask if it is OK to fly the flag upside down in protest, for example: to protest the economy, an election or against the war. The Flag Code states it should only be displayed upside down when there is extreme danger to life or property. It would be quite the stretch to make an argument that any type of political purpose would constitute “dire distress”. It is recommended that people who wish to make a protest in this fashion do so that it is respectful of the flag. We must remember that our flag represents the government of the United States and all of its policies. It also stands for our freedom of speech, our right to practice or even not to practice the religion of our choice and it represents one united nation in all its glory and the American values. Most importantly it stands for the sacrifices made past, present and in the future to protect our freedoms.”direct quote from usaflagsupply on the net.
