To do so, you would need dissolved Borax (sodium borate) in the ratio of about 1 oz Borax per cup of hot water. The effectiveness of the retardant can be increased by adding boric acid (about 1/2 oz per cup of water). The mixture can then be sprayed onto any material made of natural fibers (such as paper, cotton, or wool). It typically will not work on synthetic fibers.
