Useful Exercises For Swimming

Swimming exercises............?

Do you still have access to a pool?
If you do, I would just keep swimming... Do Pyramid Sets of Free style, and then do another one Alternating IM (Fly back breast free). That will do everything you want to.

if not...
For core, i would Recommend incline sit ups/ pushups.
You can use the adjustable benches at any gym.
Do jumping squats for your upper and lower legs, as well as your core.\
As for endurance, nothing helps swimming stamina other than... swimming. Running and swimming use different sets of muscles ( or rather, swimming uses ALL muscles while running is limited to mostly your legs) so your best chance for endurance is to do pyramid interval sets in the pool (8x25m with 10 seconds in between, 4x50m with 10 secs rest, etc.) [Or 8x50m if you're doing long course]
You're sorta young so it'd be hard to gain a really significant amount of muscle weightlifting, so I would just get in the pool a few months early.
Best of Luck in Summer League!

Swimming for Exercise?

Swimming is a great whole body form of exercise.

It is great for those wishing to tone up and otherwise improve their aerobic capacity.

For those just starting out or with joint problems/arthritis etc...it can also be a godsend as the water supports the bulk of your weight reducing the impact on joints and cartilage whilst still allowing a full range of movement.

With regards as to which stroke is best...well I'd personally recommend Butterfly as I find it the most ardous to perform.

Freestyle is great and can be performed over long distances but you'll find many regular long distance freestylers with atrophied legs...as they allow these to dangle or trail behind while concentrating on using their arms/shoulders to pull them through the water. It's really only competitive freestylers who ACTIVELY push using their legs to kick whilst pulling through the water using their arms as well!

Breastroke is great as it actively uses the whole body to move through the water...in fact for a solid workout...try just using just your arms to pull yourself along without kicking...it's very difficult and a good upper body strength builder! Be careful though...Breastroke can be problematic for those with BACK COMPLAINTS however as you use your back to push and stretch yourself through the water.

Backstroke like freestyle is again a great long distance stroke although it requires more active use of the legs to kick through the water.

Each stroke has it's good and bad points...perhaps you might like to consider a combination (eg medley) as a good all round regime.

Happy Swimming :)

What are the gym exercises for swimming?

I am a gym enthusiast and as well as swimmerThis is meI have a lean physique and quite interested in swimming. Hence I would like to share few of my workout which helps me in swimmingLATS pull down- For swimming u need a good lats which helps you pull the hand strokes it looks something like thisDeadlift- it's best exercise for Lower back which is one of the vital muscle for body movement for your legs strokeShrugs- helps you build your trapezoid muscle again for hand strokesBarbell chest press - while swimming I felt a lot of pressure on just and hence this muscle is very important. But u don't want a bulky chest but a lean oneSquats - The most important one for your legs and gluten muscle to enhances. I would recommend you doing a lot of squats.Hamstring curl- overall string leg muscle will enhance your swimming performance greatlyCalf workout- without a good calves you won't be able to make a stiff push or stroke from your legThese are my few basic exercises. Only do with proper guidance and feel free to add few more if needed.

What kinds of exercises should I do before swimming?

Well, if you mean right before you are about to swim, you should not be worried about doing certain types of excercise, rather you should be doing stretches, or if you mean you are going to start a swim program, I would suggest close grip pushups as those really hit the triceps, and I would also recomend doing pullups as those work the lats. Triceps and lats are the primary muscles used in pulling so working those are crucial. Squat jumps can also be useful in streghtening your push of a wall and also building up your thigh muscles.

What "dry land" exercises are useful for swimming (butterfly/cross-stroke)?

At the moment, I'm doing push-ups, crunches, bicep curls, overhead presses, the invisible chair (the one where you lean against a wall for a set amount of time with your legs making a right angle), and one-legged squats~ish. What other exercises should I do to MAINLY help my butterfly. Cross stroke (freestyle) itself isn't a problem but for butterfly, I seem to lose a lot of energy while swimming and the strength in my kicks seem virtually nonexistant (hands do most of the work). Also, please point out what exercies that I am doing at the moment help improve my butterfly.

~note: I'm 5'2.5, male, and have size 7 shoes, tiny hands,123.5 lbs, 16 yrs old

What is the best exercise to do for swimming in the pool?

Swimming, australian crawl, breast stroke, frog kick, side stroke, all use different muscles. Then the rest of the exercises you do elsewhere, arm circles, thigh crosses, all are good too. In other words, while an expert may tell you if there is indeed a "best", I think any activity to stretch or use muscles while the appendage is under water will be good for you.

Is swimming the best exercise for weight loss?

In general, the best exercises for weight loss are those that are weight-bearing, such as walking or jogging. Up to 30 per cent less energy is used in activities such as swimming or cycling, which support weight and can be carried out at a more leisurely pace.

Because fat floats, an obese individual is likely to use relatively less energy while swimming, particularly if that person is an experienced swimmer. This does not negate the benefits of swimming as an exercise but reduces its relative effectiveness for fat loss compared with walking.

Bottom Line: Obviously an experienced swimmer with a good routine will burn more calories swimming, than walking. However even if Michael Phelps does a 2 hour swimming routine a max effort and Michael Jordan(or some other elite athlete) does ground cardio training at a max intensity, The ground athlete will burn more calories, hands down.

You flat out have to move more in water to achieve the same calorie burning you do walking.

Do you agree?

Which Swimming strokes are great exercise for which body parts?

from what i know  about swimming      FREESTYLE: (the most common among all ) is the fastest of all and is not specific to any body part rather its a good over-all toning exercise for body     The upper chest and shoulder muscles do get in shape.     Breast stroke: also known as frog , we use the frog kick along with movement of hand circularly  in opposite direction inside water , it tones up your thighs and triceps majorly and  also over-all toning  of other muscle, slowest of all the strokes,    Backstroke: also for the over all toning    Butterfly : we use the dolphin kick in it , it majorly effects your abdomen toning, biceps and triceps.                   the hand moment along with the kicks are tremendous for exercise and burns up lot of calorie quickly , i get easily exhausted by it.      in general kicking and all the swimming strokes burns up a lot of calories , so if you want to lose weight then swimming is the best exercise        though the effect of the toning comes only when you swim regularly. for the first time the effect are only visible after a  month or so , so no magical outcome in a day    SWIMMING  in general is the best exercise as it tones up all your body part, but if you want to lose your belly then butterfly stroke and dolphin kick is the exercise i would prefer! i love swimming , always wanted a pool at Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra

What are the best dry land exercises for swimmers?

As i competitive club swimmer of almost 10 years , maintaining proper scapular stability and mobility is key for a swimmer. Shoulder health is maintained by a multitude of muscles, however most swimmers ( myself included for a while ) have really weak external rotators of the shoulder in comparison to our overused pecs and lats. Some exercises to help with this are :Serratus Plank push ups ( serratus anterior aids with elevating the scapula smoothly when in an overhead position )While this video focuses on olympic weightlifting, the shoulder mobility and stability exercises demonstrated here will do wonders to keep your shoulders healthy.Besides the prehab exercises i mentioned, there are many other good dryland exercises such as :Barbell Squats, body weight squats,Deadlifts, Romanian deadlifts ,Pull ups, Overhead press, farmers carries. If you have access to the proper equipment, a prowler push/run will do wonders for your explosive speed.
