Value Quilts Finding Value Play With Light And Dark On

Why are quilts made from patches?

Why are quilts made from patches?Traditionally, quilts were made from patches of fabric left over from making clothing. Sewing together triangles and squares in light and dark patterns made for delightful blankets. A traditional example is this variation on the nine-patch, named Road Fifteen Sixteen Patch.FROM 101+ Best Quilt Patterns for Free: Quilt Block Patterns, Quilt Patterns for Baby, and MoreHowever, now-a-days, not all quilts are made from patches. Sometimes, people take two large sheets of fabric, put quilt batting in between, and quilt them together. They use fancy patterns for the quilting process to make a beautiful bedspread. I have seen this done with a huge bouquet pattern quilted into the middle, and filled in with fan pattern quilting. In the image below you can see the fan pattern quilted on the borders. I can’t find any images of a completely plain quilt-spread.FROM 101+ Best Quilt Patterns for Free: Quilt Block Patterns, Quilt Patterns for Baby, and MoreUPDATE: From Donna Faye's answer I learned that these plain quilts are called whole cloth quilts. That helped me find an image to illustrate. See how beautiful it is.FROM Wholecloth history

I am planning a trip to India, for the sole purpose of purchasing a rug for a friend. Where is the best place to go for price and quality?

I have purchased rugs in Delhi, Agra, Jaipur and Pondicherry. All were under $2,000. I am sure that you can buy rugs almost anywhere for almost any price. Bhadoi and Myrzapur areas have many rug shops. In my travels, I have seen three types of sellers: 1. Government Emporiums – have fixed prices, guaranteed quality and you won't be totally ripped off, or2. Private shops – have a high price tag but are open to bargaining, but I have found the best place to get a “deal”3. Street sellers – expect to negotiate but quality varies greatly. Questions to ask when buying rugs are:Do I like the design? There is no point in buying something that is not used! How does the material feel? Is it smooth but strong? (Brush over it with your thumb to see if it is brittle or sheds.) I only purchase wool rugs! Use the "burn test" to identify the material - see The Fire TestIs the rug woven? They will usually last the longest. How does the color look? Is there a big difference in the colors from the front to the back (sun fade may be a sign of inferior dyes)? Do the colors test as colorfast? How is the shape of the rug? No rugs are perfectly rectangular, but make sure the rug does not have any glaring weaving flaws that are causing twisting when laid flat. How does the rug look when you walk around to both ends? Every rug has a “light” and “dark” direction, so take a look from all angles to truly get the richness of its look. How does the back of the rug look? Do you see any flaws in the weaving tension that are creating creases? Do you see any areas of discoloration or past dye bleed? Are the sides or ends unraveling?Ask if there are there any “care” conditions you need to be aware ofAsk your guides about how long the seller has been in business? This is difficult because some guides get an incentive for bringing client to a shop. Do your research. Finally the price. Pricing is based on size of rug, number of knots per inch, how it is made and what the seller thinks you will pay. You will hear stories about people buying for 10% of the original price! Most of the rugs that I have purchased have cost me between 50 and 70% of the original price. Do not be too “hung up” about this because sometimes the rug is just what you want and it really is much better value than buying at home.

What are the benefits of studying at JNV over other schools?

Education SystemNavodayas are CBSE schools, so the syllabus is similar to every other CBSE schools. But Navodaya taught us how to learn things better, apart from knowledge that we gained from the text books. So the difference lies in the learning strategy of the students. I always make sure not to learn anything wrong, even if I haven't learnt anything.Individual AttentionThe teachers are doing a great job in taking care of each child in their all round development. In academics, sports, co-curricular activities etc etc. Self DependentRight from the age of 10 or 11 we have started doing our things by our own. Most importantly we have made our decisions by our own.Flexible to situationsWe adhere to different situations and people easily. Some friends(non-navodayans) use to say that we are like cats, even if we fall, we fall on four legs. We are less-prone to disappointments. We try to find happiness in everything.True identityBasically children inherits the traits of their parents as they are staying with them when they get moulded. Since we are away from parents we are free to choose whom we have to make us our role model. It might be our parents, teachers or anyone else whom we get inspired of. Our character is what we have chosen, very less intervention of parents of family members. Mostly we inherit some character from one and some from another.SportsmanOnly Sunday passes without morning PT and Evening Games at Navodaya. Each student is good in at least one sport. Sport days and sport meets are really memorable experience a student can have in the school life. After all it was a great life experience.
