Timberlands are out! Some what outdated.. I never see anyone wear them anymore.. And there swade so a kinda 1 season deal.. UGH gross

In Germany, are Dr. Marten boots considered "negative".?

Go to google or bung and search for images for "skinheads", there are images of people and dress code usually connected with right wing people/Neonazies in Germany. The Dr.Marten Boots really look very similar to some of the boots, especially when worn with white tying laces (that is a "secret sign" for them).

Its not a 'don't" but if you want to avoid any strange situation I would avoid them.

Vegan question?????????

Theres a bit of a grey area here as you wouldn't want to throw out the boots because that would be wasteful but you're still using an animal byproduct. I personally think that if you make it a priority to not purchase anymore articles that contain leather but still make use of what you have then you can still fall under the classification as a vegan. Plus wearing the boots until they fall apart has a slight indian feel to it XD.

When you are looking for new shoes and boots in the future I implore you to check out the palladiumboots.com website. They have a large selection with very few containing any leather, it is normally canvas or watersealed canvas with rubber accents around the toes. Not to mention most of their boots bend at the ankle, which makes for more utility in style and through seasons. I have a pair and love them. Sometimes you can find them on ebay for cheap that have not been worn.

Blausekau- your argument has a bit of a pitfall in that a lot of skincare lines will contain milk or ingredients derived from honey and 99% of vegans would deem this unfit for their lifestyle. It would be the same as a vegan going out to buy milk, honey, mayo or eggs for skincare. You may think that consumption and secondary uses fall into different categories but they dont. vegans abstain from preventing harm to themselves through consumption of animal products and exploitation of animals.

Which footwear brands do you recommend, similar to Timberland and Frye Company?

Thanks for the A2A.To me, The Frye Company and Timberland are as different as they come. Frye has this distinctive vintage-inspired look and Timberland is, well, Timberland. Lumberjack chic if you will. What they have in common is heavy use of full-grain leather. Some similar brands to check out may be:Red Wing, esp. their Iron Ranger collection. Expensive, but great quality and worth every penny.Maria Riding Company (okay, no full-grain leather or distressed look here, but worth checking out if you like Frye and Timberland boots)And, finally, Labuta Mineiro, a quaint Portuguese brand that is virtually unknown outside Europe but is sooo worth it. If you have a few extra bucks to spend, that is. These babies are seriously expensive.Image credit: Google

Do you buy boots that are half a size up from your regular shoe size? Why or why not?

I've never had a problem with buying boots "on size." I will make sure that they are a little loose if I try them on without wool socks because wool socks are thicker than cotton socks. But because shoe sizes actually vary from company to company I still have to try the boots on. The hardest part about buying boots is the fact that I am Jain and I don't buy leather. This is not a problem for women in the US because many cheap women's shoe brands make non-leather (pleather) boots but for men this is much more difficult. Basically I have to buy Dr. Martens vegan boots, which hurt my feet so I have to put insoles in them and wear thick socks.

Is it okay to wear leather boots in the rain?

Contrary to other responses, I would suggest not to wear Leather boots in rain on regular basis. Usually its not the leather that is damaged but the other parts of the shoe like glues, insoles, embellishments, metal zips, etc. that give away once fully wet. Cows don't use umbrella but they are alive in the rain. Leather is Skin of an Animal - a Dead Animal and there is no healing of this leather from the body of the animal and that's why leather ages faster without care.If you must wear the shoes in rain/water, make sure to use some leather protection sprays, water repellent shoe creams, mink Oil or you can use the Silicone sprays that are very good at repelling water and giving the leather a nice shine. If the shoes are wet, you should dry it in natural air without using hot air from hair dryers or any other heat source as it will deform them permanently.

Opinions on "vegans" who still wear clothing made from animals?

Who is Ariana Grande?

I have a pair of leather Bass penny loafers. I got them fifteen years ago long before I cared about from where things originated. I found them at a consignment shop for around $5 and they looked and felt almost new. Going with the way I was raised about buying things that are cheap and could keep them as long as possible, I bought them. (Being cheap, I was around 20, and used some of my confirmation money from when I was a day shy of 13.) I still wear the loafers and I'm 36.

When I was 24 or 25, I bought a wool sweater vest with an argyle pattern. It was between $12-15. I don't wear it much because it's hand wash only.

About five years ago, my clothes horse SIL gave me an argyle blend sweater that is also hand wash only. I still have it and wear it.

Yes. I still have the clothes. The sweaters, because I like them. The shoes, because I like them and because I am way too cheap to buy new ones to replace them. They are still in great condition and I don't have any reason to buy new ones. If somebody thinks that is wrong, then s/he can buy me new clothes.

How to care for Canvas Dr Marten Boots?

MissyDee, I found these two items on different parts of the Dr Marten website:

Special Care of Soles Needed in Kitchen Environments

Dr. Martens footwear, with its PVC air-cushioned soles is known for both its comfort and durability. It is, however, wear-tested in a street environment, not in a kitchen environment.

Fats such as cooking oils and greases used in kitchens are very aggressive on all types of footwear, including Dr. Martens.

If shoes are intended for this environment, we suggest special care. Washing the soles off daily with warm water and a grease-cutting soap (i.e. Dawn, Palmolive, etc.) and ensuring that the uppers are cleaned and protected may help footwear last longer in the kitchen environment.

Dr. Martens soles are oil, fat, acid, petrol, alkali RESISTANT, but not PROOF.

Are Dr. Marten boots safe to play in the snow?

Ruined...most likely not. They're designed to have oil and dirt on them. They are work boots. I can't say they will be warm or waterproof. Give them a good coat of wax shoe polish tonight and dry them slowly after they get wet. Once dry, reapply some shoe polish or leather treatment oil to prevent them from losing their natural oils and help the leather from cracking or splitting.
