Want To Get Into Fashion Design But Not Sure Where To Start

I really want be a fashion designer

people always tell me that i have style and fashion sense. i know to how to sew and use the sewing machine and i always add details to my clothes. i just dont know where to start. like do i go to a college to become one and if so how long is schooling and is it hard to get into the school?? also im second guessing it cause it seems like everyone nowdays wants to have there own fashion line and i know if i did become one id need to be at the top ahead of everyone but im not a very good explainer or public speaker lol idk advice help or something please : )

I want to be a fashion designer, but i suck at sewing and i have really good designs!?

Lots of established designers routinely hire pattern-makers to transfer their designs into a pattern which is then cut and sewn by a professional seamstress, unfortunately not having those skills will seriously handicap your design abilities because someone who understands how to transfer a design into the 3D reality of a completed garment will always be a better artist simply because they fully understand their medium. It's like saying you can draw really good sculptures but don't know one end of a chisel from another.

There are also many more aspects to design, such as understanding pattern-making, to knowing what to look for in textiles, to the marketing aspects of the career which you will need to gain any success unless your very lucky or have good connections.

Also to consider is that to gain entry into any post-secondary design program (which is almost always necessary to gain a foothold in the industry) you will have to put together a portfolio for your application and most portfolio's have to include several pieces of your own finished work. That being said most colleges that offer design programs also offer introductory sewing classes and portfolio prep courses which help you prepare for entry into the actual design program. I suggest you do some research on design programs in your area and look for some introductory sewing classes to work on your skills.

I want a career change to fashion design, but I don't know where to start. I can draw by looking at fashion pictures. Can you give me some advice?

Start with a sewing machine, a few patterns & some fabric to make sure the construction aspect is actually something you enjoy. Fashion Design is mostly pattern making, sewing & textiles and is extremely detail oriented. Yes, it is also highly creative but drawing is a very small percentage of what you'd actually be doing. Many designers spend their career sewing/pattern making for other designers or manufacturers so if sketching is the only part you really enjoy, then I'd suggest graphic design, or another artistic venture over fashion; ad design can be lucrative and highly creative too.Pursuing design is similar to pursuing acting or modeling. It's pretty tough to make it on talent alone; living in an urban area, having solid connections, going to the ‘right’ school and having super thick skin are just as important (And expensive). There are also Merchandising/Buying positions in fashion which keep you in the industry & don't necessarily require the expensive education that design might; but no drawing is involved. This route is more easily attainable but tends to result in less creative, lower paying retail jobs with crap hours.So….know the options and what the job actually entails, but more importantly, find out if you have a passion for it first. Since that’s easier said than done (for all of us :-) , maybe start with learning how to convert one of your drawings into a garment to see if you enjoy the creative process? Enroll in a sewing/pattern making or drawing class nearby to check it out first?

Is fashion designing a good career?

my parents don't want me to do fashion designing. they want me to get a decent and steady job. i also want to become a singer. they tell me to complete mba and can do singing and fashion designing as a part time.i have lots or creativity and i can draw well. i have the eye for color as they say. i dont want my talents go to waste. being in tamil nadu, india, signing and fashion designing aren't considered very decent. i'm in my high school. do you think i should talk to them after i graduate so they take me seriously? it is not really easy to do anything concerning fashion being in madurai. but i want to get as much experience as possible. help me guys. i am feeling life my dreams are being crumbled right in front of me. i ahve so many interests. but everything during the time of my public exam time. i want to go to art classes, i want to learn guitar, key board and singing. i have no idea how to do all these things being in madurai. u have to be in new york or something to go get experience in working for fashion houses. i am desperate!

How should I start a portfolio for a Fashion Design college?

Im a sophmore in highschool, I was origanally going to be an artist, but once I hit middle school I got fashion fever. I sew well, and I consider myself origanal.

What are the steps I need to take to plan a portfolio? How many designs should I have ready to show? How many design boards should I have? Should I make an actual outfit/dress to bring in and show, or wear?

Thanks in advanced!

How can one become a fashion designer, starting with no experience?

The answer depends on what type of "fashion designer" you aim to become. If you are referring to a fashion designer that works as an employee completing technical design (and trend analysis, etc) for companies such as JCrew, Gap/Banana Republic, Vince, North Face, Land's End, C Wonder, Ann Taylor and all the other contemporary brands out there, then you will need to obtain a formal education with the required skills - and many schools offer this, not just Parsons or FIT.  This is like any other job; a competition of resumes and training. If instead you are referring to becoming a creative director, or a fashion designer for your own branded line, then the path is not rigid with formal education, but instead requires immense talent, business sense, and energy.  Here, interning for a top designer or top pattern maker would be an important step. I recommend doing both, ideally in Paris, London, New York, or Milan.  Examples of such designers include Tom Ford, who did not study fashion design at all but studied architecture at Parsons, and obtained a key internship.  The rest is history.  At least 50% of the top luxury designers today fit this category, including Miuccia Prada, Yigal Azrouel, Altuzarra, Dolce & Gabbana, and Karl Lagerfeld (Lagerfeld was hired as Pierre Balmain’s assistant at age 17 and worked with him for three years. After working as Balmain’s assistant, Lagerfeld became Jean Patou’s art director for five years.)  Immense talent, no formal design school training.  Learn on the job, under a very talented mentor. Finally, if you have the financial resources, then you can have a company overnight and hire designers to formally execute your vision (see e.g., Victoria Beckham and Tory Burch), and hire PR to generate sales.  Capital is the main barrier to entry and success in this industry.

If I don't know drawing can I do fashion designing?

Let me tell you about a friend(true story). She wanted to do fashion designing (fd). But was average at basic pencil drawings, she was super bad with a brush in hand! She took admission in Gift(kolkata) in fd course. But she also started learning drawing and painting skills. Worked real hard. Topped her class in first year(8.4). So, you can take admission but be sure to work hard. Any kind of designing, primary includes drawing and sketching and painting! Best of luck!
