Warren Moon The Greatest Houston Oiler Ever

Who all wore #7 for the Houston Oilers?

I think Tony Zendejas (1985-1990) wore #7. He definitely did in SF, and given those first two photos look to me he had it in Houston as well.

Bucky Richardson (1992-1994) wore #7 at Texas A&M, but what did he wear in Houston? Photos, not surprisingly, are elusive.

Do you believe in the Houston TEXANS or the Houston OILERS?

The Houston Texans have a great franchise name, but to be honest, it doesn't compare with the great tradition of the Oilers. Which would you rather have, the navy bull mascot with the Texas flag -OR- the great red, white, & blue oil derrick logo? Houston TEXANS or Houston OILERS?

Me? I wish they'd go back to the Oilers. The Oilers conjure up memories of Bruce Matthews, Warren Moon, & Earl Campbell. The Texans conjure up memories of passing up on Reggie Bush and an organization banking on the breakout of tailback Dominick Davis.

Did Warren Moon ever play for the San Diego Chargers?

No.

Edmonton Eskimos (1978-1983)
Houston Oilers (1984-1993)
Minnesota Vikings (1994-1996)
Seattle Seahawks (1997-1998)
Kansas City Chiefs (1999-2000)

What is the franchise history of the Houston Oilers?

AFL team started in 1960 by bud adams. Won an afl championship. Moved to afc central in 1970. Had big rivalry with steelers in late 70s. Played in 2 afc championships. Had hall of famer earl campbell. Struggled in the early 80s. Made playoffs 6 straight years from 1987–93 with warren moon as qb. Never won a super bowl. Blew biggest playoff lead vs bills in 1992. Moved to nashville in 1997. Changed name to titans in 1999 and went to the super bowl vs rams but lost.

How/Why did Warren Moon go undrafted in the NFL?

Moon wasn't that great in college. Playing in the Canadian football league was a good thing for Moon, because it let him hone is skills and get better. When Moon finally became a starter, in the NFL, his stats for his first few years weren't that good. If Moon got a chance in the NFL right away then he likely would have just washed out right away.

Who was a better QB Warren Moon or Randall Cunningham?

I think you made the case for Moon pretty well.. Cunningham was a great QB, and the best scrambler ever to play the position. But Moon went to 9 Pro Bowls, and thats after spending a good prime of his career in Canada.. If he spent his whole career in the NFL, most would probably put his name with the Montana's and Elway's.. It's really a shame.

Football ~ Jim Kelly or Warren Moon?

I'd definitely go with Warren Moon. I don't know how you could deduct points for him playing in a run & gun offense with the Oilers, he was still good after leaving even in his later years. Moon is pound for pound the better thrower, threw one of the tightest spirals, definitely the more prolific passer and if your gonna penalyze him for runnin & gunnin you gotta acknowledge that Kelly ran a no huddle offense another way of putting up large passing totals. Only thing Jim Kelly really has on him is making it to the Super Bowl four years in a row although you could argue Kelly played on much better offenses

Who is the most underrated quarterback in NFL history?

Fran Tarkenton. When he retired, he held the records career passing yards and TDs (Favre, manning and others hold them now) -- but he essentially broke all of Johnny Unitas' then-passing records. His career approximate value -- 240 -- ranks third in NFL History.  http://www.pro-football-referenc...Oh, not among quarterbacks, BTW.Among EVERY PLAYER WHO EVER PLAYED THE GAME.Ray Lewis, who just retired, had a career AV of 222.  Favre's is 254 -- first -- largely due to longevity. Manning enters 2013-14 with a career AV of 236 -- behind Tarkenton.Elway's AV for his career was 203.Yet how many people rank Tarkenton with players like Elway and Favre?  Few do -- and that's really unfair.Tarkenton is ridiculed because he never won a Super Bowl, and went just 6-5 in the playoffs.Hmm.  Favre went 13-11 in the playoffs.  Manning's career record is 9-10.Oh, and by the way?The five teams that beat Tarkenton in the playoffs?+ The 1973 Dolphins (12-2, 15-2 including Super Bowl victory)+ The 1974 Steelers (10-4, 13-3-1 including SB win)+ The 1975 Cowboys (10-4, 12-5 including playoffs) - on a Hail Mary play.+ The 1977 Raiders (13-1, 16-1 including Super Bowl victory)+ The 1978 Rams (12-4, 13-5 including playoffs)   These teams went 57-14-1 in the regular season, 69-16-1 overall, and included three Super Bowl Champs! So come on -- it's not like Tarkenton didn't produce in the playoffs, it's more like he kept running into some of the greatest teams ever (the Dolphins, Cowboys, Raiders and Steelers of the 70s) when he got there.  Jim Kelly in Buffalo might be able to commiserate.Anyway, here are Tarkenton's career stats:http://www.pro-football-referenc...Had he not lost a decade playing for truly horrible teams (early 60s Minnesota, late 60s Giants), he might have been the guy he became (1972-76 were his big years) much sooner.  He had a 92-53 TDP-INT ratio in those years, during an era when 1:1 was good and 1.5:1 was elite.Tarkenton was like a slightly taller, better, Doug Flutie.  You watched him, and your eyes said "no elite arm strength, he's too small, he runs around too much..." and then he beat your prototype QB.  Another guy who was like Tark: Drew Brees.  Too small, doesn't fit the prototype, blah, blah, blah -- then he goes out and hangs 40 on a good defense. Is Tarkenton the best QB ever?  No.Top 5?  No.Top 10?  Close.10-15?  That's about right.Yet he's largely forgotten.
