As Tom Hyer mentioned, the German tale was called Rotkäppchen which literally means 'Little Red Cap'.The French fairy tale is called Le petit chaperon rouge which can also be translated as 'little red hood'. According to the Free Dictionary, ladies in the 16th century would wear hoods, which were in French called a ''chaperon''.The title of the fairy tale therefore refers to the main character and what she is wearing, a young girl in a red hood. Somewhere along the lines ''riding'' must have been added to the English name (when and why I don't quite know) and so the name Little Red Riding Hood as we know it, came to be.
