Was My Roommate Being Wise

Am I right to be mad at my roommate?

Yesterday, I went downstairs and over to the cabinet where I keep my dishes. Luckily, before I got any further, I noticed pieces of glass on the floor (and I was barefoot!) I found a broken glass in the trash. Apparently, my roommate/landlord broke 1 of my glasses & didn't even sweep up. She didn't leave a note saying sorry for breaking my glass or to even watch out for broken glass on the floor...and it's right in front of my cabinet door where I walk everyday! Am I right in leaving a note saying "Whoever broke a glass, there is still a lot of glass on the floor!" or should I clean up her mess? This happened yesterday & while I have not seen her, she has been by the house (but hasn't seen my note; I just put it up). Do you think I am justified in being upset??

How old is too old to be living with roommates?

I don't necessarily think that I'm too old to be living with roommates... I'm only 23. But 2 of my roommates are graduating and moving out on their own. One of my roommates is staying and one of our friends is moving in. But my other roommate is only staying for a couple months because she is getting married. I feel like everyone is moving on with their lives and I'm just stuck.

What is your opinion on how old is too old to live with roommates and how do I get out of this rut? Thanks.

What are the things you would never share with your roommate?

Interesting question.Room-mates keep changing with phase of your life. When in school, it is most likely that you live and share room with your siblings. Generally, when we are too young we are very possessive of certain toys, clothes etc. and would refrain from sharing anything but as we grow by playing together and living together; we tend to share almost everything that can be shared → geometry boxes, bags, food, toys whatever. Then comes the residential college - the undergraduate degree. In India, most likely we have same sex hostels, so in all probability your roommate would be of your gender only. Things which are not shared are very few, including a few clothes, toothbrushes, perhaps certain personal stuff, and maybe some gossip. It also depends on the bonding that one develops as a friend over the years after staying in hostels. For e.g. I rarely used a lock, never bothered about the laptop and I could use my friend’s laptop or room mate’s laptop quite freely. Then comes the job experience. Most likely first job starts at 22 after undergrads and maybe at 24 after post grads for some. The first starting salary could be good, average, above average etc. but in cities such as Mumbai, Bengaluru you tend to share apartments, if not your rooms. This is a very professional phase and as you are earning you become more sophisticated and more of your belongings you don’t share unlike the hostels. Only exception would be if you are sharing the flat with college friends and not your professional colleagues. Then you are in a normal course of events - married (or maybe move in a live-in) and your spouse becomes your room-mate - well, permanent roommate (remember TVF). In this case things that you will share would be perhaps the highest, depends on the relationship though, and therefore the set of things that the room-mates don’t share would be very minimal. In short, room-mate types, room-mates themselves, keep on changing with different phases of life and so do things that you share with them.

How do you get rid of a boring roommate?

"I like to work at home whereas my roommate just want to go out and do nothing" - your room mate!!!!As Yasaswini Oruganti rightly said "boring" is just a matter of perspective. Now you both are  room partners and not couples with a commitment to go out and spend  time together!!!It is also possible  that you room partner might be spending time on something else at home,  it can anything may be some competition preparation, any dream project,  learning something, etcIf you have a problem then you should leave on a friendly note and I am sure you can easily find several fake reasons to easily move out.Choose a room partner who leaves his work when you fall sick and takes you to the hospital and not someone who would like to go out for party only. And if you get a roommate who can do both then you are as lucky as me.

My roommate is a sex offender and didnt tell me?

Sex offenders have rights. Unless your lease (if any) forbids this, you will probably have to comply with the same set of rules as other non-offender roomates. A background check might have revealed this, along with a proper search of this person's name on an offender database. But the system is imperfect. It is a sensitive decision for you whether or not you want to bring up why you are evicting this person, and it may be less emotional to simply tell (in writing) this person no reason. Coming up with a different reason may result in a discriminatory charge, depending on how litigious this person is, but this would probnably be a remote risk.

PROCEDURE:
Send a 5 day notice to move. If he has not moved in that time, go to court and file for eviction. A hearing will be scheduled. If the tenant/roomate does not show up to protest your claim, the judge will automatically issue a default judgment against the tenant. The eviction could take place as soon as 72 hours later, although some locations allow the tenant 10 days.

If this person has established residency as outlined by state law (usually, this means residing there longer than a month, receiving mail there, etc.), you cannot just simply toss him or her out and change the locks.

What steps do I need to take to evict a roommate who isn't on my apartment lease?

Eviction is a legal process. That process can begin only when a person without a lease has been given at least 30 days' notice to vacate by the lawful owner or tenant and has failed to do so. At that point, the next steps should be directed by a lawyer. He/she will file a dispossession action on your behalf. If you are successful the court will order the roommate to leave by a date certain. If necessary, the person will be forcibly removed by the Marshal or local law enforcement. If you anticipate that your roommate will not leave and that legal action will be necessary, it would be wise to have a lawyer send the notice to vacate. Besides the added weight of a legal notice from a lawyer, if your notice is not served properly, worded properly, or is legally defective, then you may have to start all over again with a new 30 day notice. As a practical matter, most people will not stay where they are not wanted, or in an environment that is not healthy or comfortable. If it's your apartment then you can create an environment that might facilitate an unwanted occupant to leave on their own accord. Get into opera music, burn incense, invite some crazy friends over for a while; you get the idea.Good luck.

My roommate in college is selling marijuana, what should i do?

You should contact your Dean and campus police or security department and let them know that your roommate is selling illegal drugs from your dorm room. You should also let them know that you wish to keep the report anonymous. If you are in the U.S. and if your school receives federal money such as PELL Grant, federally subsidized student loans or other types of federal money, then the school also has to record it as a drug crime that has happened in the dorm. The Clery Act is a law that requires them to record this and publish the number of crimes that happen on or near their campus. It does not require them to record who reported the crime.

The campus police (or local police) should be able to take care of the situation without telling anyone you are the person who reported it. If your campus only has a campus security department (without sworn officers) then they could help you contact the local police and help you report it anonymously. If you don't report it and this roommate has the drugs in a common area of the room (that is, an area that is accessible to both of you) and he denies that the drugs are his when the police show up and before you report it, then you could both be arrested.

Reporting it to the police will help establish the fact that the drugs are not yours and that you are not involved in the sale and or distribution of illegal drugs. For your own safety it might be wise to seek another room or roommate as soon as possible.

Is it ok to not pay taxes on rent your roommate pays you?

If one roommate assembles the rent and merely passes the total payment to the landlord, the roommate is merely acting as a conduit for the convenience of the others. There is no income to be taxed.(If the “conduit” roommate is receiving payments which leave a trace, such as receiving checks into his bank account, it would be wise to keep records to prove the conduit situation, just in case s/he is audited. You don’t want this: Tax agent: “I see deposits of $x per month which you didn’t declare. You’re a lyin’, cheatin’ tax evader, aren’t you?!?”)If the roommate receiving the money is paying the landlord less than s/he collected, then the roommate is receiving declarable income.
