Could World War I have been averted if Franz Ferdinand and his wife hadn't been murdered by Serbian nationalists in 1914?

Not really. These were the series of events that took place :1. Germany REALLY wanted stuff like colonies, world domination and greater power and Britain and Russia were not so keen on letting Germany have any of these. Germany was ready for a war, the only question was the timing.2. Now comes in Austria-Hungary. I read a statement somewhere, "The war began because Archie Duke shot an ostrich because he was hungry". The point being that the whole idea that the assassination of the Archduke led to the war is a mockery. The thing is, you see, nobody really cared about the Archduke, not the then Emperor neither the Austrians (they didn't like him or something of that sort), in short they were like "Good Riddance!" in their minds and a tear on their face.3. So, Austria gave a list of demands to Serbia, which Serbia more or less accepted. But Austria didn't really care about it to begin with. They just shouted ""War! ". Germany didn't really like Austria and didn't trust Austria either, but being the good friend it was, it lent its full support to Austria, even if the Russians were involved (Germany really wanted to fight Russia).4. Serbia went to Russia and Russia joined in. Russia ordered mobilization of its army. Germany said, "Don't so this", knowing that Russia would not listen (Who would?). Now, bound by some treaties (some of them dating back as much as 75 years), France, Britain and Japan are dragged into the war, they all declare war on Germany.5. Austria-Hungary declared war on Japan because it declared war on Germany. 6. So, this is what was happening - Germany was at war with Britain, Russia, Japan and France........Wait, there is something wrong with this picture......Oh, right, where in the world is Serbia? So, Germany was at war with a lot of countries for Austria-Hungary's support bar the one country Austria-Hungary was actually at war with. The end point being that countries then would have found some other reason to go to war if they did not have the whole assassination thing. You can refer to my answer here for further details.Pooja Dubey's answer to Could World War I have been avoided? Why or why not?

Is it true that World War 1 started when a bloke called Archie Duke shot an ostrich 'cause he was hungry?

That and,as captain Blackadder said, the concept that the 2 alliance blocks formed would act as a deterrent to war was b******s

How many animals died during World War II?

Astoundingly, it's estimated that nearly 750,000 domesticated animals, mostly cats and dogs, were euthanized in Britain over the course of one week at the start of WWII... 3/4 million pets in one week.In the summer of 1939, just before the outbreak of war, the National Air Raid Precautions Animals Committee (NARPAC) was formed. It drafted a notice - Advice to Animal Owners. The pamphlet said: "If at all possible, send or take your household animals into the country in advance of an emergency." It concluded: "If you cannot place them in the care of neighbours, it really is kindest to have them destroyed." [1]The advice was printed in almost every newspaper and announced on the BBC. The pamphlet set off a wave of panic. It was "a national tragedy in the making" [2]As there were no rations provided for pets, it was thought euthanasia was the humane decision rather than watching a beloved animal die slowly from starvation or disease. As the war progressed across Europe, this same trend followed along with it.In addition to household pets, several zoos in Europe were destroyed by bombings. Thousands of animals were either killed outright or died later from their injuries or disease due to lack of food and basic care.Hundreds of farms were destroyed along with sheep, pigs, herds of cattle and whatever barnyard creature happened to be present.Thousands of homing pigeons used for carrying messages, dogs trained to carry and locate explosives, and horses used in many capacities, all gave their lives to the war effort.Food shortages were so great that horses, donkeys, dogs and other privately owned animals were eaten out of sheer desperation. Owners couldn't feed their pets and made a choice to spare them a death by starvation and illness.Millions of horses and donkeys died as a result of being pressed into service to transport food, supplies, artillery and anything else they could be made to pull or carry. When food was scarce they were slaughtered to feed the troops. The Animals in War Memorial in Hyde Park, London, is home to a lovely tribute to the animals that served with British and Allied Forces during WWII.This sculpture below is located at the animals in war memorial in Confederation Park, Ontario, Canada. World War II and U. S. Isolationism Help!?

No guarantees that its right.

Can anybody give me a brief summary about world war 1 and 2 ????????

WWI, the First World War, the Great War, and "The War to End All Wars", was a global military conflict that took place mostly in Europe between 1914 and 1918. It left millions dead and re-shaped the modern world.

The Allied Powers, led by France, Russia, the British Empire, and later, Italy and the US, defeated the Central Powers: Austria-Hungary, the German Empire, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire.

WWII, or the Second World War, was a worldwide conflict fought between the Allied Powers and the Axis Powers, from 1939 until 1945. Armed forces from over seventy nations engaged in aerial, naval, and ground-based combat. Spanning much of the globe, World War II resulted in the deaths of over sixty million people, making it the deadliest conflict in human history. The war ended with an Allied victory.

Positives and negatives of the alliance system in the world war I?

The only positive for the alliance system would have been for Serbia who had a secret treaty in its back pocket, giving it the courage to refuse the Austria-Hungary ultimatum.

Other than that perspective, the tangled web of treaties, both known and secret, caused the war between Austria-Hungary and Serbia to escalate into a World War almost overnight. That's why President Wilson at the Treaty of Versailles in 1919 called for an end to secret treaties and "open covenants openly arrived at".

A-H knew that Serbia had a treaty with Russia but wasn't worried because they had a treaty with Germany. Serbia could refuse the demands of A-H because they had a treaty with France. If memory serves, Britian was out of the loop on the first round, but when the Germans crossed the border of nuetral Belgium, they had a treaty with Belgium and came in against Germany.

For the best explanation of this see, "August 1914" by Barbara Tuckman, it is a very good book.
