BQ: Kno Ft. Tonedeff- I Wish I Was Dead
[Tonedeff]
It seems I’m captive in a carnival
The main attraction
People stand in line for hours, stoked
They pay to laugh
and see me sabotage my charted goal to escape this trap
while reading transcripts of my horoscopes
Then it fades to black
Repeat the pattern till my heart of gold
is stained and cracked
Decreased in value
if I pawned it whole
would I make it back?
The things that matter seem so hard to hold, so I’ll face the facts
And leave this planet how I found it
Lone
And embrace the casket
Feel so damaged, that I can hardly cope in a savage world, where the scars reopen at random
If you don’t wanna choke, put a bandage over your parted throat
I’m man that’s on his own and I can’t get over these obstacles
And it adds a sting that the common folks are this adamant to think god’s a hoax
And I’m outta hope
Though I’m strong I don’t wanna live with the strain
No positive notes, no prospect glowing to give me the strength
I simply revisit the day that misery came
And, I wait for the light at the end of the tunnel, until it hits me
That it was a train

What are the greatest rhymes in hip hop?

From an under appreciated track from the under-appreciated Black Sheep, who after a spectacularly sampled/produced but lyrically fluffy album about bustin' nuts mostly drop a meditation on race and black middle class and introspection at the tail end of the record. Choice excerpts:Now, I was told to never bite off more then I could chew. But then you better bite enough for if you don't my boy you're blue. Now I wonder, can others see the system that I see or do they see and say they blame it on society. My people, from nigger to negro to man of color, killed my father and my brother so that you could rape my mother. Now you wonder, why is it through instinct you fear? Not to worry, to harm your intention of my creed. But to stop your greed and give me what I need.Opportunity, for a life of me. And generations to come with in tranquility. Now harmony, is a total love of things. For those who are inclined or better yet like to sing. But piece of mind it is my right for the spark will ignite. 'Till I can catch a cab at the town at midnight. 'Till I can be myself and not be thought as worse. 'Till I can buy a slice from Howard Beach to the Hearst. 'Till I can get the pill without fear of eject. And occupations which I seek I can have if I select. Now if I so select and reach out to make touch. How can you say that I ask for too much. But anyway, another day, in the land of shoveJust living in the life of who?A black man on a green land with a blue skylineDon't tell me I'm color blindI'm seeing system is hard to believe inUnderneath the underside I'm underachievingBust my ass in school, to be a certified foolNow intellect of curb is my only toolBut street game is so uncouthI took the SAT's and that's the sad-ass truthI'm not gliding but I'm striving hanging on by a thread and it's called survivingHang on, hang on, hang you'allWalk the street and keep you head so tallFor time is short,  no time is boughtYou're only in the wrong if you get caughtSo kick in doors, bang on walls, shout in hallsGet yours. Get yours.

Which rappers have the best complex rhyme schemes?

An interesting question. If you stare down the history of rhymes in music and relate it to the evolution of rap, a beautiful pattern unfolds. What I will do here is list some very intriguing rhymes. What you should understand is that complex rhymes are not exclusive (mostly) to rap artists. Why?Well, because an artist who chooses some very dense rhymes in one song would go easy on some others for better storytelling.Anyhow, some very noteworthy mentions are :Notorious BIG - HypnotiseIt is often said to be the “smoothest rap” song ever. See how he alternates between long and short sentences and also notice the frequency of his rhymes. His laid back delivery makes it all the more gripping. He isn't regarded as the one of the best rappers for nothing.Mos Def - RedefinitionHe hits every note within the bar with a rhyme. This feat is almost impossible to maintain. Take a look. The man hardly ever cursed and he often probed some very sensitive issues with his rhymes.Eminem - Lose yourselfArguably, one of the best rap songs of all time. Look at this complex rhyme scheme.HOLY FUCK ! He also tells a very compelling and touching stories along with these rhymes. What is very interesting is that as he enunciates he often changes the pronunciation to rhyme and that is the clever ingenuity. Let me explain.Consider your words “ whole ” and “ knows ” from the verse. Now ask anyone to enunciate and ask if they rhyme. It doesn't, does it ? And now listen to the song. And listen carefully how he drawls the syllable “ ho” in “whole” and the same way stretches “ no” in “knows”. You see how it rhymes ?Eminem in pretty much the same way rhymes “orange” with “syringe” by twisting the pronunciation. Who says orange doesn't rhyme with anything ? The song did not win the Oscar for no reason.MF DOOM - Meat GrinderEver heard of someone rhyming complete sentences together ? Here we goI really can go on and on about him but I leave it upto you to discover this artist. The lyrics dances, the music enhances and the chance is he might be the one whose rhymes are the densest. ( Just off the top off my head :) )Happy reading.

Is hip hop getting boring?

This question and some of the answers remind me of a quote by the late film critic Andrew Sarris when asked if American cinema was losing its touch in the 90s. To paraphrase: I see hundreds of movies each year. Most are bad. But the ones that are truly good really speak to me just like any other extraordinary film I’ve seen in the past. The point is, people will always complain about the decline of an art like hip-hop, when in reality there is, was, and will be always bad hip-hop diminishing the name of the truly good, which also continues to exist and be produced. When we look to the past, we only remember the good songs that truly made a mark in our lives, and not the disposable beats we left untouched on the airwaves. That note aside, has the overall quality of the genre declined? Most people would say yes, and have been saying this since the turn of the century when hip-hop went mainstream. I’m inclined to agree. To quote Jay-Z from his track “Moment of Clarity”:I dumbed down for my audience to double my dollarsThey criticized me for it, yet they all yell "holla"If skills sold, truth be told, I'd probably be lyrically Talib KweliTruthfully I wanna rhyme like Common SenseBut I did 5 mill' – I ain't been rhyming like Common sinceAs hip-hop’s Wikipedia page points out, rap music found a new source of creativity in “alternative hip hop” in the mid-2000s through artists mainstream like Kanye West and Drake and other niche acts like Gnarls Barkley and M.I.A.It could be argued that source of artistic exploration seems to have petered out. That said, hip-hop was the most streamed genre of 2016 — calling it boring would betray the data. Some newer schools of hip-hop that are developing at the moment include:Musical/jazz/socially conscious hip-hop (Kendrick Lamar, Chance the Rapper, Hamilton Soundtrack)Mumble rap (Migos, Young Thug, Future)Club music (Big Sean, most mainstream hip-hop?)Non-American rap (I know less about this, but Yung Lean, Keith Ape, etc.)Some people want to compare mumble rap to grunge rock in that it’s a sign of the decay of the art form, although I’ll wait and see. There’s still exciting hip-hop to be found, and looking at the charts the genre is alive and growing.EDITS: Credit to my friends Ian Kirchner and Greg Sanda for feedback on this post, especially w/last section on contemporary hip-hop
