Ways To Get A Dent Out Of A Plastic Cup

Ways to get a dent out of a plastic cup?

You'll need more heat than simple hot water. Apparently you had it in the dishwasher on the dry cycle. Not good for plastics, as you see. A heat gun, the kind that look like a heavy duty blow dryer MIGHT do it. Maybe putting it in BOILING water will work? Makes it hell to mess with, but spoons and such will make that doable. Try anything, what the heck, worst case, you have to buy a new cup. If you can't fix it, you'll have to buy a new one anyway, so go for it. Try anything.

Can plastic cups be used in an oven?

No. They will melt. They will bleed melted organs as the heat slowly consumes their lives.

How hot does it have to get for kayak plastic to melt?

The kayak will not actually melt, but if you leave it on a hard surface or a roof rack in 100 degree weather the plastic will soften and you can get what is called "oil-canning". This is where the hull develops a flat spot on the bottom or a caved in ridge where it sits on the rack. If you have to leave your kayak on the car rack for a long time on a hot day, lay it upside down so the hull doesn't get deformed OR carry it on its side on J-racks. When you store it in your yard or garage, lean it on it's side which is the strongest dimension of the kayak.

Once a hull is oil-canned it is almost impossible to pop the dent back out and it will reduce the value of the boat and affect the performance. It is the most common cause of damage to plastic kayaks and the most easily preventable.

What is the cheapest way to fix a dent in a car?

It depends on the nature of the dent. If the dent is merely the metal or plastic bending in, and can be bent back out, there are strong suction cups designed to pull the dents out. If the dent is deep and the metal round it is creased, then often the dent is very difficult or impossible to pull out, and even if it is, it leaves creases in the metal and paint. These dents often must be hammered back into position. Then the metal or plastic needs to be fixed to be flat (or shaped as they are supposed to). To fix damaged metal shape, you first remove paint and primer over the damaged area by sanding. Once bare metal is exposed, deep spots can be drilled, in order to insert a hook into the hole and pull-out the metal. then Bondo or other auto-body filler can be applied (use many thin layers, allowing to dry between coats then sanding each coat, until the area is built-up and smoothed over.Once you have built-up and smoothed the area to the desired shape, then the area needs to be primed (a pre-paint paint that helps paint adhere to auto-body filler and metal, while protecting the metal) and then painted.  If the damage has been done on a plastic area of the vehicle, then follow a similar process, except use a plastic adhering auto-body filler.

How do I get a dent out of a swell water bottle?

You can push outward on the dent with the handle of a sturdy wooden spoon.Pressurization of the bottle should also pop out the dent. You could try filling the bottle EXACTLY 90% by volume with water and then putting the bottle on its side in the freezer with the air bubble centered as closely as possible on the dent. Lay a folded towel over the bottle to encourage freezing to commence on the bottom side of the bottle, leaving unfrozen water at the base of the air bubble until the very end. As the water freezes, it expands and will squeeze the air bubble against the dent. The density of ice is 0.9167 g/cm3, meaning the water will expand 8% when it freezes. Measure the water volume PRECISELY, or you will rupture the bottle. Monitor the process closely so you can take the bottle out of the freezer as soon as the dent pops out. If you wait until it fully freezes, the bottle may burst. Sometimes the bottle top is the weakest part, so there is some chance of stripping the threads or causing water leakage through the spout. A pan underneath to catch any drips would be a good idea.If you want to play it safe, start with the bottle 85% full by volume and add 1% volume amounts of water into the air bubble above the ice and re-freezing. Repeat until the dent pops or you have added 91.6% of the bottle volume. Do not exceed 91.6% of the bottle volume, or you are guaranteed to burst the bottle. Remember to drape the towel over the bottle.
