Where and how do you invest your monthly salary?

Hi All,Awasum answers across from many intellectuals. Thank you for that.My answer’s context is India. Here is my answer and I KIS (keep it simple). Here is some back ground, a married with one 9 year old and staying with my parents. House is paid off and no loans.Age: 36Working Experience- 13 yearsQualification- M.TechI generally do not believe in loans until recent. one of my adviser told me to take home loan and use that money for buying another property as it will give me money at effective rate of 7 % after deducting Tax benefits.I have bought a real estate property again in tier 1 metro city (1.1 Cr.) which is on rent. No loans and fully paid off property.Pointers-I do not buy new phones, all my and wife’s cell phones are used one, I take utmost care while getting a used one, mostly from online portals. I straight away save 30% as I find some phones which are used for just 2- 3 months and available at very cheap rates, I bought a VIVO NEX almost new at 28KWe live frugal, lower middle class life style. Not much fancy and sometime boringMe and wife both believe in simple living and high thinking, we invest in books, holidays, great and quality food and experiencesWe invest in health and things which adds value to life and not lifestyle, we have joined a gym which is nearby but the cheapest in our area. Primary reason is, if the gym is far after a while it will be boring to go everyday. I have never missed 4 days gym in past 5 yearsMy son goes to international board, again nearby my home so no bus expenses, wife goes to drop and pick himSon goes to extra curricular activities everyday- learning chess, guitar, grammars and spoken English etc.No expenses for parents, they take care of them selvesNo liabilities, no loans~70% income goes in savingsPeople say I am miser, I believe them :-)Wife earns 60K a year, she does not invest, she mostly spends in charity, miscellaneous expensesI drive a Honda 2012 model, one of my bike is 12 year old and other one is 1 year oldI use bike going to office, I read some where that “If you are going alone in a car everyday to your workplace, do not consider your self educated”Suggestions are always welcome.Thank you!Edit1: thank you Venkatesh for the suggested edit

How Long Will a Pilot Light Last with a 5 Gal Propane Tank?

90,000 btu's will burn 1 gallon in 1 hour.

An average pilot light is about 1000 btu's.

90,000 ÷ 1,000 = 90.0

So, your pilot light will burn 1 gallon every 90 hours. 90 X 5 gallons = 450 hours. 450 ÷ 24 hours = 18.75 days.

Since we don't know the exact btu rating of the pilot I would suggest a 5 gallon (it's a cylinder, not a tank) will last around 18 days. They use a lot more than you might think!

Edit: The numbers are what they are...
90,000 btu's DOES burn 1 gallon in 1 hour. Undisputible! No "ifs ands or buts" about it!

The only variable here is what does the pilot consume in btu's...Some appliances it is 1500 btu's, some small appliances it is possible that it could be 900 btu's (600 is pretty small,), some very large commercial boilers have pilots that are 10,000 btu's or even larger. I've seen boilers with two stage pilots! A 1500 btu pilot lights a 125,000 btu burner, which acts as the pilot for the main 15,000,000 btu burner!

I used 1000 btu's as an example. So let's redo this with 600 btu's if you want...

90,000 ÷ 600 = 150.0

So, your pilot light will burn 1 gallon every 150 hours. 150 X 5 gallons = 750 hours. 750 ÷ 24 hours = 31.25 days.

My point is, it's not going to make that much difference. A pilot light DOES consume fuel. You are not going to run it for months on a 20lb cylinder...

By all means, call around! I don't pretend to know everything about this business, but I think you are going to find much the same response from people in the business. I've been doing this for a long time and I'm a recognized trainer in the industry. I was a service technician for a number of years installing, servicing and diagnosing installations. I do know what I'm talking about! I'm not an engineer sitting at a desk with a sliderule and calculator all day.

I hope you find the answer you are looking for...

My furnace just went and i can't afford a new one. What can I do?

he has a cracked heat exchanger, he really does need a new furnace, never tell someone to fix it themself, you need a licenced technician to do the work. if he were to do something wrong and blow up his house the insurance company wouldn't cover him. just get a couple of electric heaters that plug into the wall. I 100% recommend an Oil-Filled Radiator Heater ( http://www.rewci.com/deoilfirahe.html ) they work great. Everyone I tell about these love em. My brothers has to get a new furnace, and I let him borrow my Oil-Filled Radiator until the guys come out to install his new furnace, and he can't believe how much heat this thing throws off. I just seen one in a flyer the other day for $40. My brother put one in his living room, and it heated up his dining room and kitchen too. so he bought another one that is heating up most off his basement. you can throw a fan behind it too, to help spread the heat.

How do you heat your home and keep Heating prices low?

The house I own had no heating system other than a blower box on the fireplace when I bought it. Several thousand dollars later I had central heat with a heat pump in place. I thought all would be great, until I got my first heating bill. If I use that thing I can expect heating bills to range from $300-600 a month in the winter.

SOOOoo I have become something of an obsessive about tricks and alternative heating sources.

1. You would not believe how much outside air leaks into your house. Go around when it's cold and windy and put your hand over door cracks, keyholes in the knobs, window sills, even along the floor by the wall. If you can't plaster over the leak, tape it. All that cold air coming in just drives up your costs.

2. A $4 flannel blanket from Walmart works wonders when hung over doorways that are not regularly used. I also hang them over windows as a cheap alternative to heavy drapery.

3. Those fireplaces? Forget 'em. They'll suck out more heat than they put in. The only time a fireplace really does good is if you are either right in front of it, or you have a blower insert that forces the heat out into the house instead of sending it all up the chimney.

4. I can't say enough about those $1.25 draft dodgers that you stick on the base of your doors. Just peel the backing and stick them on. Any hardware store or Walmart will have them.

5. Insulation. When is the last time you checked it in your attic? You lose a LOT of heat through the ceiling, so a few hundred bucks worth of blown in insulation can save you thousands over a few years. You need at least 6 inches of insulation up there (I put in a foot!), so if it's all compressed down to a few inches, it's time to resupply.

Look around, you'll find one of those radiators. I finally realized the heat pump was very efficient until the outside temp dropped below 45, then the meter nearly spun off it's base. So, I hooked up a free standing, vent free, propane fueled fireplace that will make the place toasty warm when the temp drops into the 30s or below.

Avoid the temptation to get little electric space heaters. The energy they use up to make that little bit of heat is NOT worth it.

What can a landlord do if a tenant refuses to leave after an eviction notice?

That depends on what you mean by “eviction notice.”An eviction notice is issued by a court after a legal process in which the landlord has been awarded possession of the premises. The eviction process is handled by a court and, if necessary, by local law enforcement pursuant to a court order. If the tenant refuses to leave after the eviction notice has been served then he or she will be forcibly removed from the premises. There is nothing the landlord needs to do.A landlord cannot issue an eviction notice because only a court has the power to evict someone from their home. But a landlord can issue a “termination notice” or a “notice to vacate” or similar notices to the tenant pursuant to the terms of the lease. If such notices have been properly issued and served, and the tenant refuses to leave, then the landlord must file a dispossession action in the local civil court which, after due process, will result in the court issuing an “eviction notice” as described above.

Do unused phone SIM cards expire if they are not used?

Some SIMs have an expiry date, so that for instance, prepaid SIMs do not lay around on the shelves of shops for years and years consuming network database resources and costing support and licence fees (and hogging a phone number) whilst earning no revenue for an operator. If they are not used by the expiry date they get removed from the network systems and can not be used.Even once active prepaid SIMs can be turned off if the user doesn’t make use of them for a while. Maybe the SIM can be reactivated in the first months/year, but eventually the SIM is deleted, again, to reduce the cost to the network of supporting SIMs that are not earning revenue. If the SIM is on a monthly contract, it is unlikely that the operator will turn off a SIM that is still bringing in money every month, if only just the line rental.I have a monthly contact SIM that I haven’t used for over a year (one of 3 with the same number, 2 others are still in use), and this is still registered in my operator’s database. I didn’t use a prepaid SIM from another operator for more than 6 months and it got deactivated, but after about 1 year I had it reactivated with the same number. It is technically possible to reactive a SIM even if deleted as long as the full details of a SIM (encryption keys included) are still available. It probably won’t be done as a one off SIM reprovisiong will be a very expensive use of network operator’s employee’s time. It would be much cheaper to activate the old phone number on a new SIM.

I have a Delhi registered car. I am moving to Bangalore. Do I need to get it registered there again else pay fine or road tax? Is the DL registered number not valid throughout India?

Legally, you can drive your delhi registered car in karnataka for upto 12 months after you have moved your car. You will have to keep a proof of moving of the car to another state. This proof can be a transport challan or a toll receipt of entry into karnataka.Between the 11th and 12th month, you can ask dwlhi rto to refund your road tax and you can get your registration transferred to karnataka. Or else you can simply pay the road tax in karnataka and drive the vehicle in delhi amd karnataka

Can I drive a vehicle of other state in Bangalore?

Yes you can but make sure you have the NOC of the other state. And if you want to use for a long span make sure you pay the road tax and many other stuffs at the nearest RTO to avoid frequent penalty’s by police. As police in Bangalore are very conserned about other states vehicles ;)
