Weed Plant Growing In My Yard. This Is My Great Grandmothers Home

What did your parents do when they caught you smoking weed?

Haha okay this still makes me laugh!I'd been smoking weed since I was around 11. I was about 13 and while I was looking for sand paper for a school project, I stumbled across a random seemingly empty coffee can. Curious, I peaked inside and found a rolled up sandwhich bag with green stuff in it. I unrolled it to check out it's contents and found an 8th of weed! I was so excited because at the time I didn't have any. So I dipped in and took a good size nug and put it back before I got caught!!I continued to randomly take some here and there. Making sure I didn't take a noticeable amount, and rolled it up how I thought it was. I did this for a few months, thinking how sneaky and awesome it was…Well one day I ran out so I want into the garage as usual to dip into my parents stash can. But this time, the lid had in black bold sharpie: “Gotcha!!!” and the coffee can was completely empty. I was so scared, I want out the side door and went for a very long walk to think of what excuses I could give them. Nothing was really going to work. So I get back home an hour or 2 later, hoping things would just be left unsaid. NOPE. Haha they were in the living room waiting. My heart was racing, my mind about to explode thinking of my punishment. Starting blushing and sweating. Finally after what seemed like hours of silent parents staring me down, they finally said:“we always roll the bag up differently everyday so we figured you were taking some when the roll wasn't right… you need to ASK us next time. Can't stop you obviously from smoking, so instead of STEALING it from us just ask please.”I sighed a huge breath of relief. “Yes! I'm off the hook!” I thought.“Oh Megann, by the way, your also grounded for 3 months… “Damn… haha almost! They couldn't have been more mellow and nice about it. Surprised the hell out of me that's for sure! They could've done locked me up and thrown away the key for WAY longer then what I got, so that was pretty cool. The same scenario played out almost exactly the same when I got caught stealing their cigarettes too. Haha after I got a job at 16 my mom agreed to just buy me my own pack as long as I payed for them myself.

Hens & peeps plant how to take care of them?

they take very little care. I like to use what is known as a "strawberry planter". It looks like a huge vase with holes around the sides. I filled mine with soil and stuck a "hen" in each hole and some in the top. By the end of the summer, I had hens and peeps ( we call them hens and chicks ) growing all over that vase. My grandma had bunch of them when I was growing up. They look very nice around a rock garden where not much else will grow. They thrive in any kind of soil and rarely need more water than what nature will provide. Of course, in a pot , you will need to water them a bit more as the water drains and the soil dries out. Treat them much like a cactus.

How can you tell difference between plants and weeds?

Previous two answers were both correct. Here is a tip that my grandmother told me when I was a little girl, and helped her in the garden: weeds often have purple either near the base of the plant by the roots or purple on the roots themselves.

How long could I expect a cottonwood tree to grow in a pot?

Give Steve a root-cut. Probably better to do that next year in mid spring. Trim the roots and trim the branches, and Steve becomes a rather large bonsai. Keep at him, and he can live as long he would in the ground.

As far as worrying about freezes, if you're growing a cottonwood, I immediately assume you live in the Midwest, where Cottonwood has lived far longer than humans on this continent. (I could be wrong. We've been transplanting native trees all over the place, where they are no longer natives.) Do check though. See how far north it ranges, and assume, in a pot, he's living one zone farther north. For instance, I live in Hardiness Zone 6 and I'm a container gardener, so it is wise if I only grow plants that can survive Zone 5. If you find out cottonwoods don't grow in the zone above you, THEN worry about wrapping the container in winter.

Also, wise to keep Steve in a pot that can withstand your winters. I've lost several terra cotta pots, because I didn't take into account that the soil and plant in them stretch and shrink the pots in the frigid temperatures of winter. (Now, I only have plants that can withstand my basement on grow lights all winter. lol)

But remember, he is in confined soil now, so it is up to you to feed and fertilize him. He's no longer in his native soil.

How do you kill plants that keep coming up and wrecking my sidewalk?

Use a propane torch to burn out the weeds, sweep clean, then seal the cracks with a mortar based caulk to prevent new weeds from sprouting.

Why are plants categorized as weeds?

There are noxious weed lists available for different areas. You did not say where you were from, so i can't say specifics on which actual plants are weeds. However, some weeds are just volunteers that have reseeded in the wrong place or in too great an abundance. With this type, weeds are undesirable and volunteers are desirable. Also, if Grandma threw seeds for Forget-Me-Nots in the garden, then no, they would not be weeds at her house. But the next year, when they show up at the neighbor's house, they would be. Just depends on what side of the fence they are on.

You should be able to get a noxious weed list from your City Hall if they don't have a listing on the web.
