I dropped my laptop and now it's making a weird noise...?
Yesterday, I dropped my laptop from my bed onto my carpet. Now, it makes a loud noise like a fan when I keep it open. If I pick it up and tilt it, it makes a crackling noise, and it kind of smells like something burning. It still works, but I'm afraid it will break or something if I leave it open for more than five minutes. It's a MacBook Pro, and if it breaks, my parents will be VERY angry. Is it broken? What can I do? Please help!

It’s normal to hear SOME fan noise.If your fan is idling (2000 RPM) and you can hear it without pressing your ear to the machine, there is likely something wrong with it. You can definitely hear it when it is at full speed (6000 RPM) so that is not unusual. You can download the app or widget iStat to monitor the fan speed. You can also download the app SMC Fan Control to manually test the speed by adjusting the speed and listening for problems. I would caution you to not leave the app manually controlling the fans or you could damage them or your computer.
How can I stop the loud fan noise from a MacBook Pro?
The question of why your fan is running hot is the real question. It may be old, it may be dirty and require a cleaning, or it may not have enough RAM which is causing the apps that are running to max out the processor and as it heats up, the fans are kicking in to try to cool it. If it is a MacBook Pro (not a retina or MacBook Air), you can open it up, add additional RAM and blow out the dust that has gathered up with a compressed air canister. You can also upgrade the standard hard drive to a SSD that does not run as hot, and can help the fans maintain the right temperature.I use an app called memory clean (available on the app store), which can manage your available RAM better than the standard OS system does, and clears it out automatically when necessary.It may also help to determine whether it always runs hot (including right after a restart), or is it only after the machine has been running for a while? Does it run hotter when certain apps are open? Are you quitting apps when you are not using them? (Browsers being left open can be a particular drain on both memory and processor speed and over time can cause all sorts of nasty things to happen on your machine). You can also check your activity monitor, (in your Utilities folder) to see if a particular process is maxing out the processor. I had a client who was synching a massive Dropbox account, and during that sync the fan sounded like a wind turbine... Dropbox was using over 130% of the processor (don't ask me about that math, that's what it said in Activity Monitor). When we quit dropbox the fan went back to normal. In most cases something like that or lack of RAM causes the fan to overcompensate and spin loudly like that.
