Were New Forms Of Communication And Media Condemned Similar To How Television And Video Games Are

What new forms of communication developed between the wars?

The new forms of mass communication and leisure created between the wars included all except:

1. the widespread use of television in most middle class homes.

2. cinema becoming an increasingly popular form of entertainment.

3. radio production and broadcasting companies increasing dramatically.

4. the automobile becoming a common method of travel for the middle classes.

5. Fascist nations them for propaganda purposes.

What are common characteristics of a cult?

Cults can be both religious or non-religious based. In all cases there is a process known as "mind control" that occurs when a person spends all their time with the cult and less and less time with their family and friends. The cult indoctrinates it's members with a certain thought process, and it's very difficult to present opposing views to the cult member once their spending all their time with the other cult members. It's hard for people who haven't been in a cult to know how subversive and controlling cults can be. Of course the cult members think their cause is the greatest (like Jonestown and Heaven's Gate), but to the outside world the cult members appear to be in some kind of trance in which they've lost the power of independent thinking. There are many support groups to explain how cults work and what the principle characteristics of cult indoctrination are including the references below.

Would television exist if commercials had no effect on consumers?

This is an interesting question, and I think it could be extended not just to television, but to all forms of mass media, since most derive the major portion of their income from ad sales. The base answer is yes, television and other media would still exist, albeit in different formats than we are used to.The media has four purposes or missions in society.  These are to inform, educate, entertain, and to turn a profit. If advertising were to be taken out of the picture, media outlets engaged in entertainment would have to find other areas of revenue generation.  As other experts here have noted, some media outlets, like Netflicks, would rely on a subscription model to generate revenue. Others might rely on government funding, or grants from philanthropists as does  PBS in the United States..If we consider the non-entertainment functions, however, then the models change. Educational media might be paid for by schools and universities and distributed free to the populace as a public service. Similarly, the informative functions could also become government provided services, serving up community information, election coverage, homework help, or school lunch menus. These services are in many respects already available in the form of community public access cable channels, as well as various publications published by trade groups, clubs, and other organizations. It's interesting to note that the Internet, nothing more than another form of media, has recently taken the lead in the educational function. Not only are online college courses available for a fee, but there are also ventures such as Ed-X, a consortium of universities that offers college-level courses at no cost. These classes often take the form of live or recorded webcasts of classroom lectures [that mimic the television model but with a different form of delivery].  We are also seeing the advent of similar free services that are targeted to homeschooled children.Much of what I've said here is only speculation, and it's anyone's guess what would happen to the media if there was no advertising.  One thing is for sure--it would be vastly different than what we have now.

Why are video games often considered a trashy form of entertainment while they statistically tend to attract intellectual clientele?

Novels were considered a trashy form of entertainment when they were new. There was widespread hysteria that if people read too many books they’d get lost in them and turn into delusional maniacs. That’s actually the basis of the story of Don Quixote — the eponymous character reads so many adventure stories that he starts experiencing delusions that he’s a knight fighting giants, when he’s actually attacking windmills. The fear that something like this could happen was considered sane and justified during the time period.Ever since then, every new form of entertainment that’s ever come along gets debased by the old guard, whoever it should happen to be. It isn’t like what they used to do to entertain themselves, they don’t know how it works, so it must be a threat. Even within the video game community this happens; mobile and social games emerge, get popular with a new subset of people, start pulling attention away from old video games, and old gamers start trashing them and their users both. You’ll see this repeated until the end of the human race.

How has social media changed the way parents raise children?

Social media has given us more contact with how other people talk and think about parenthood and how they are raising their children.Commonly held positions that most of us either support or at least don't strongly oppose, such as the importance of not beating our children, of treating them with respect and courtesy, are strengthened. The importance of good nutrition, of minimizing exposure to junk food and sugary drinks, and getting enough healthy exercise are emphasized. The value we place on developing an educated mind is enhanced, whether that education comes from a formal institution or from private reading. We have a consensus across the educated elites of several nations that this is how our children should be raised.Less commonly held positions such as family beds, homeschooling, tv-free, even diaper-free become more widely understood, part of the common repertoire of possible responses, things we may or may not choose to do but know we could if it seemed appropriate. So we all gradually become better educated in our parenting choices. Sometimes this runs us into trouble with authority figures such as magistrates or child protection officers who are less well educated in modern parenting, but we're working on that. And for all our challenges, it makes us glad that we don't live in the third world, China, India or the US, and we don't have to make bad decisions based on a fear of abject poverty as parents in those countries do. A well-padded welfare safety net is a great assurance in parenting.

Which is the greatest invention to date?

Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen was born in Germany, raised at Netherlands, had his higher education in Switzerland, Zurich. He was a brilliant student, a keen researcher and above all a fantastic human being. As far as research and science is concerned, his sharp eyes did not miss even the faintest twinkle of a new development.Wilhelm RontgenIn the summer of 1895, he was experimenting with diffraction of rays in a vacuum tube, partly covered by cardboard. A barium coated glass plate lay several meters away from the workbench. Suddenly he noted an unusual faint glow of the barium coated plate. With his incisive mind, and sharp sense of deduction, Wilhelm understood that the vacuum tube produced some kind of extraordinary wave that penetrated the cardboard covering of the tube and lit of the barium coated glass plate. A wave, a ray, unheard of till that day. A ray destined to change the very face of medicine, giving rise to a new era in medical imaging. Wilhelm started experimenting, spending day and night in his Lab.On November 8th he was ready to surprise his young wife. He invited her to his lab, asked her to put the palm of her left hand inside a box shaped contraption. A little later, working with the chemicals he produced the first ever picture of the bones of her hand, with the wedding ring clearly visible. Mrs Rontgen was not impressed, but the world stood up in attention. The science of medical imaging was born with the advent of X ray.The First X-Ray of Roentgens Wife. The wedding Ring is visible.X ray quickly caught the imagination of everyone, from scientists to fiction writers, comic books to pornography, with stories that now all human secrets under the cloth is revealed. Stories of X Ray spectacles surfaced. Superheroes with X ray vision were born. But X-ray was poised to travel to new heights, far beyond diagnosis of fractures or chest infections. The modern day Cath lab (Angiogram lab) still use the same kind of vacuum tube that Rontgen experimented with but technically vastly advanced. Without X-Ray discovery, there would have been no angiogram, angioplasty or bypass-surgery.But wait, I salute Roentgen for something else.Rontgen wanted his discovery to benefit everyone. He refused to patent his invention, declaring that the medical miracle is for everyone’s benefit.Patenting it, would have given him millions, not doing it benefitted millions.

What should I do since I’ve discovered my son is playing computer games two to three hours every day behind our backs?

One thing that everyone seems to have missed, is that there’s NO SUCH THING as “wasting” time. Time is not yours. You do not own it, nor is it manageable. You can simply live through it. Modern physics tells us it is considerably more plastic and pliable than most people realize. Here’s the thing: Whether a person is attempting to make it through a University program, composing a symphony, digging a ditch, masturbating or solving world hunger, rest and relaxation are an essential piece of the process. put a person to work for 8 hours a day, and they will accomplish x amount of work. Give them 10 hours with few or no breaks, and they will accomplish x OR LESS work. We don’t have computers between our ears, we have brains, and those brains have an optimum working state. If exhaustion or severe boredom is allowed into the equation, the quality AND quantity of useful work will tank immediately. If the person is presented with an authoritarian “do it or else” situation, their energy will be wasted in resistance, resentment, fear of retribution, and fantasies of revenge.People do not (and SHOULD NOT) appreciate being ordered to do something. Even if you are paying for your son’s schooling, you are severely undermining him by micromanaging his work and study habits. You are STEALING his chance to make mistakes, learn from them, and adjust things to avoid making those mistakes again. This, BTW is nearly the ONLY way human beings ever learn anything. Even though we LOVE to imitate each other, we don’t actually learn in any useful way until we’ve put the thing through its paces, hit the wall a few times, course corrected and found a workable version of whatever. You seem to think you know more or better than your son. What are your qualifications? Do you have a degree in Education or Psychology? Are you a self-taught expert on learning theory or human behavior? A video game designer, programmer, critic or reviewer? If you haven’t said yes yet, I suggest that your opinions are irrelevant to the situation. You have no facts upon which you could base a reasonable opinion. Better leave it alone unless you wish to raise a helpless adult who will have to turn to you for every decision making crossroads in his life until you die, leaving him…?

How does social media affect our lives?

Media plays very a important role and has influence in virtually every aspect of our lives. It is considered as the best source to know about the happenings of world. Newspaper, magazine, radio, television and internet are the different types of media. It greatly affects our lives because media has the power to influence our thoughts. This influence is sometimes positive and sometimes negative.Positive effects:Earth has become a global village due to media. We can know about any part of the world within minutes through television and internet. Media is the best way to spread knowledge, information and news from one part of the world to the other.Media educates the people to know about their basic rights and how to use them. It is also a link between the government and people because all the policies and activities of government are conveyed through media.Education programs help the people to learn anything through internet, television and radio. Children can develop their skills and intellect by watching these programs because audio and visual media makes it quite easy to understand.Advertisements help us to know the different products in the market and we can easily make our choices according to our needs.Weather forecast programs tell us about the weather so that we can take precautions or plan accordingly.Negative effects :Media is the most influential one for the people to resort violence. Studies have suggested that the exposure to violence on television, movies and video games make the children more aggressive, fearful, less trusting and more accepting of violence. This does not mean that they will start bringing weapons in the school but they will be more aggressive and less trusting towards their friends, teachers and siblings.Sex and violence in media also lead towards the sex crimes in the society. It traumatizes youngsters which result in abuse in the home, streets, towards children etc. Some advertisements try to influence the people by telling them the importance of branded items. As a result children and youngsters become status conscious and thinks that by using these items they can show their high status in the society. To fulfill their needs or to impress others they many times go violent to get money.Every coin has two sides, similarly Media has positive and negative effects.
