What Apps Can I Put On My Phone That Will Work During A Flight

Will a boarding pass from my phone work?

I'm flying Jet Blue and have the app. I checked in online this morning (My flight is tomorrow morning) and it showed me my boarding pass. I still have a bag to be checked in so I still have to wait in line, but will they allow me to go through security with my mobile boarding pass on my phone?

If a phone is in Airplane Mode will alarms still work?

Yes. Airplane mode only affects parts of the phone that require radio for operations (Bluetooth, WiFi, 3G, 4G, LTE, GSM, GPRS… and GPS). Once in Airplane mode, you can turn individually each of these services back on (for example if in a plane you have on-board WiFi, while in airplane mode you can just turn the WiFi back on). That said, alarms are not related to radio equipment. They are time sensitive elements stored in the calendar. If they are in the calendar time-frame that is currently synced to your phone… then when the time comes, they will trigger. So it might make alarm noises. To avoid alarms triggering, you should actually set the phone to “Do Not Disturb”… and make sure that Alarms are not set as “Priority” (in which case, they might still trigger).

How serious is leaving a cell phone on during a flight?

I was in the jump seat when the pilot got worried.I’d shown up at Charles de Gaulle for the last flight of the evening to Stansted (“London”) airport. Turned out my ticket was for the *next* day and the flight I wanted was sold out. Oops. As a repeat flyer on that route they offered me the jump seat behind the captain and his co-captain. Yes, this was a few years before 9–11. Great view! Gave me headphones so I could hear everything between Tower and Captain.Just as we turned onto the runway for departure we all heard terrible static in our headphones. Worse, louder and longer than this: Bass Glitch Sound Effect 3 ~ Sound Clip #77026789If the tower was saying anything (such as “watch out for that plane about to land on your runway!”) we certainly wouldn’t have been able to hear it. The Captain yelled at me to turn off my mobile phone and told his co-Captain to look out the window to see if all was clear (it was). My phone was off, but someone’s was on.

Can I use my cell phone as a boarding pass for Spirit Airlines?

I booked a flight on Spirit. I cannot locate any fine print where I can use my Android device as a e-ticket instead of printing one. I flew Delta and US Airways before and the TSA scanned my cell phone bar code through my Gmail. Will it work for Spirit as well?

Does airplane mode on a mobile phone do the same thing as switching off the phone?

Nope. They do not serve the same purpose.Airplane mode disables only the device’s wireless transmission functions - cellular radio, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS.  When on Airplane mode, your device will stop communicating with cell towers, stop scanning for Wifi networks and so zero radiations. You can still use a number of apps for Gaming, Camera and Gallery, Reading, etc. which do not require transmission of signals. Smartphones also have an option to enable WiFi while still on airplane mode. So in the modern flights which have in-flight WiFi facilities, you can still use your WiFi on your smartphone/tablet on airplane mode.As you can see, unlike switch-off mode, airplane mode offers you a lot more opportunities in using your smartphone productively.

Does mobile GPS work onboard airplanes?

Experience suggests that the aircraft skin blocks the signals.  At least while on the ground, a GPS runner's watch loses signal unless you hold it right against the window glass (looking at the 12-bar signal strength display, not just whether it will lock in).Secondly, unless you've acquired a GPS designed for high altitude, the GPS software limits the search-space to plausible terrestrial altitudes, probably to make the lock faster.  (Some claim the altitude limit is to prevent use in an amateur ICBM; I find that unconvincing.)  Hence most driving, hiking, and runners GPS units (e.g. Garmin eTrex, Forerunner, Edge) won't work above about 30k feet altitude.  Commercial aircraft routinely exceed 35,000 feet, and some private jets (e.g. G5) ceiling above 50,000 feet.  APRS Balloon hobbyists have lists of devices that work at much higher altitudes - up to and above 100k feet.
