What surprised you about Turkey?
I’ve been living in Turkey for 4 months so far.Coming from a Muslim country- Morocco- I realized that are many similarities between these two countries. However, since the first day when I had arrived, I developed a habit of writing in a small notebook all the things that caught my attention about Turkey.So here is a non-exhaustive list of things that surprised me about this country:1- Very few people can speak English: I was surprised by the fact that even highly educated people cannot speak this international language. It’s just something that I can’t wrap my mind around.2- Very few people dance in nightclubs: Even if it’s a place to have fun, I noticed that Turkish people- especially guys -do not dance. You rarely see them having FUN and ‘dancing like nobody was watching’.3- Smoking: Almost everyone smokes but again, that’s none of my business. Despite of coming from a country like Morocco where girls do not usually smoke in public- leave aside girls with Hijab-. This thing was really surprised me.4- Food is great: It is.5- Candy crush: I don’t know if I just pay too much attention to details, but old people have something for Candy Crush.6- Chicken legs and liver are so cheap: Ridiculously cheap.7- White cars: I’d say, here in Bursa, 80 percent of cars are white. But I understood from a friend that it’s because it costs less, so why not.8- He, she and it are all the same: ‘’o’’. While I got used (in French and Arabic) to separate feminine from masculine.9- Beautiful people: Inside-out and I mean it. Turkish people level of handsomeness/ beauty is above average and they are really nice and helpful towards foreigners.That’s it so far,With loveEDIT 10 November 2018:I’ve been in different countries around the world after Turkey (for 2years now) but I still didn’t find a place as magical as Turkey, so now I am looking for a job there (Marketing and Sales). Maybe you can help me go back there for good?
