Is this a good best man speech?
I think that is very nice. I especially liked the word "startling" ... it adds a little drama to the piece and coming so early in the speech really spices it up. It amazes me that people can figure out about their life partners on a first date! That is of course the stuff of legend but that it happens is real life is great too! They sound like a terrific couple and it's nice that you thank both of them for their friendship. The only thing I might worry about is if Luke would think he is characterized as not so terribly, terribly manly if he was "hyperventilating." But it tells the real story ... a bit of Luke's character that the audience will love to be let in on. And Lisa will love it! So as long as you're great bros with Luke and you know he'll be fine with that, I say, it's a great speech and will make a great memory. Oh, p.s. Also, if you wanted to expand on the similarities between them, that might be cool. You got my interest with that and then didn't elaborate. Probably all their friends and relations know but if you wanted to give examples, that would be more personal stuff the audience, and the couple, might eat up. Just, as indicated before, wise to sidestep anything too embarrassing lol :) :) I've seen a lot of these speeches in movies. Yours is right up there! Hope they record you so they can save it for posterity!
Do you write a title for speech?
Yes generally this practice is followed. When the TMOD (Toastmasters of the Day) introduces a speaker on stage they give the speech title. I have some advice that’s fairly obvious but rarely used:When you are trying to convince people of something, talk about the benefits for them.I know, really obvious right?But you wouldn't believe how many people only talk about themselves instead. Consider these two statements, both paraphrases of real student speeches I’ve heard:"I want to be class president because I think that I can do a really good job. I'm a strong leader and I love to plan events and write speeches. I listen to people and help them when they are in trouble, and I will be listening to you all if you elect me. I think you should pick me because I can be the best president our class has ever had!”“I would like to be your class president because you have told me that you want a fun, involved class council. You want to have lots of regular events, and to have the best class spirit at our school. I want to make that a reality. If you elect me, I will work with our advisor to put on at least one class event each month. I will set up a box so anyone can submit ideas for events and fundraisers. And, I will campaign to the administration so we can go on a fun end-of-the-year trip to the beach with everyone in our class.”Which one of these random people do you want to vote for? Which would you want to be friends with?A few additional pointers:Be concrete. Talk about very specific things that you plan to do, and only those things you know you actually can do.Tell a story. Well, you really didn't give an idea of your direction, which is why nobody responded. Knowing what I know about Obamas ideas.. a good thesis statement could possibly be: "In this time of uncertainty and transition, America is looking for a change, a change in the way business is done and unanimously that change has been the election of Barack Obama" His speech is all about change.... and your opposition is about accepting that change but that change in itself might take time... in any essay, you always need a conflict to your argument, it is more credible. My statement is general and perhaps you can elaborate or add to it...but your thesis for this speech should focus on change. good luck
