Well, usually contemporary means same genre during the same time frame... like Britney Spears and Christina Agulara are contemporaries (same genre, same time) if you were trying to discribe classical music, you could also say "Bach and his contemporaries", meaning other people in the same genre during the same time period. Traditionally, when speaking of art, "contemporary" is considered anything after WWII to the present, unless you give a specific example to the contrary (so if you were to mention da Vinci, it would indicate mid to late 1400's). So, the question means "What is the purpose of art in today's society? What impact does it have, or how does it influence our modern culture?" Lack of empathy/compassion. People would rather pretend that bad things don't happen or just tell themselves that it's not their problem or they don't care rather than get to the bottom of the issue and try to help. Society is very lonely when everyone is apathetic toward everyone else.

I would think contemporary culture means the culture, or behaviors and practices of the people of current times. In my opinion, one of the most significant problems with contemporary culture is that mainstream society tends to focus on outward appearances, like wealth and good looks, rather than what is really important; ie how you treat others and the relationships you maintain. At the end of your life, it will not matter if you drove a Lexus or owned a Yaht or how pretty your face looked. People are becoming less and less connectioned with one another as time goes on. We think we are so advanced nowadays with technology and such, but mentally we are still just a bunch of cavemen and women, driving SUVs and chatting on cellphones.

I was going to use a smart phone or ipod but, I think they are more of cultural complexes (a set of related cultural traits). BTW a cultural object is any object at all that demonstrates or represents culture.

For the naivete I want to keep it simple , Anthropology is a generic discipline and one of the most misunderstood subjects.Applied anthro finds it's feet everywhere, a few of them are :Forensics : not only dna matching and chronology dating , this branch of anthro guides us how to differentiate between various ethnic groups and actually provides region specific solutions based on the knowledge it already has.Govt /social welfare programme : Anthropologists dilineate where to apply which initiative factoring in the peculiarities of the targeted communities. For example a sect of Bhils in hilly areas of Odisha don't sell their cattle’s milk or trade them as it is believed that it brings bad omen to their entire community.Consequently GOI schemes such as dairy development are tend to fail in that area .Sports : it has endless applications, like which kind of body structure is suitable to which sport, the duration and efficiency of such body. The suitability of a body type from a particular community can at best be described by an anthropologist.& many more .
