The End

What was the one protection slaves had against mistreatment?

Well, if you were a slave and really didn’t want to be mistreated any longer, I suppose you could always commit suicide. But you’d have to make damn sure you succeeded, because an unsuccessful suicide attempt would probably be severely punished by your master and/or overseer. The thing is most human beings are not suicidal by nature. Most of us have a burning desire to endure and do our best to survive, even in circumstances of intolerable cruelty. Plus, even if your mistreatment drives you to despair, you very likely have family members who need you. Parents, siblings, a spouse, children. Not that property was allowed to get legally married, but many considered themselves married in the eyes of God. Unless you were willing to commit suicide, you had absolutely no defence against the myriad abuses perpetuated against you.Have you ever seen Steve McQueen’s film “Twelve Years a Slave”, based on the autobiography of Solomon Northrop, a free black man from New York State who was abducted and sold into slavery in the antebellum South? His story is the very rare slave narrative that ends happily. None of the other slaves on his plantation were rescued along with him when, after 12 years of enduring unspeakable cruelty, he was able to return to his family in the north and live out the remainder of his life as a free man.Edited to add: And John Precht points out in comments that Solomon Northrop May have been assassinated, as his autobiography was hugely embarrassing to slave owners. According to Wikipedia, he disappears from the historical narrative in 1857, and nobody is really sure whether he simply died or disappeared under mysterious (and very likely criminal) circumstances.Another good narrative which deals with the reality of living as a slave is the TV show Underground, sadly recently cancelled after 2 superb seasons.Underground (TV Series 2016– )It deals with a group of slaves who plan and later execute a daring and hella risky escape from 1850s Georgia, with assistance from the abolitionist Underground Railroad. Really riveting, and it didn’t get the ratings it deserved. The box set of both seasons is available on Amazon USA for $29.16 USDAmazon.com: Underground (Tv Series) - Season 01 / Underground (Tv Series) - Season 02 - Set: Aldis Hodge, Renwick D. II Scott, Alano Miller, Jurnee Smollett-Bell: Movies & TVOr on Amazon Canada both seasons are available for $36.99 CAD.Set Sous-titres français: Amazon.ca: Jurnee Smollett-Bell: DVDI recommend it.
