Why do films set in antiquity (i.e ancient Egypt and Rome) have the actors speaking with British Accents?
I've noticed the same thing and always thought it was funny. It's not just that the actors are British; American actors cast in these films will still often adopt a faux-British accent too. I think it's that, to American ears, British accents generally sound archaic and aristocratic. Also, British accents (like Cockney) sort the speakers out by class much more than American accents do.

Cleopatra isn't a great film (and it's extremely long - like 4hrs), but the production values are excellent, if you're mostly interested in epic ancient Egyptian sets and backgrounds.

You could watch “Troy”, while still getting the original Iliad wrong on a couple occasions, it's a pretty good representation.I also want to add that it's hard to find series of movies which do the Myths honour. I suggest reading books on the subject instead. One book I can greatly recommend is “The Norse Myths” by Kevin Crosseley-Holland.

You know that scene in... mummy 2? i think? well one of the mummy videos where the two girls kind of have a flashback? or they are doing some kind of ceremony? they are fighting infront of the pharoh? Anyway, i want it to be that kind of setting, like really egyptian looking. But i want the WHOLE movie to be in that kind of setting. If anyone knows the movie Agora? It's okay if it's like that but agora seems to be just kind of ancient rome? I want it to be specifically egypt. The story doesn't have to be accurate. I don't prefer documentaries but if it's more entertaining than educational, then it's okay.

One of the best documentaries about Ancient Greece that I know of is Chris Marker’s L'Héritage de la chouette/The Owl’s legacyIt is about 13 hours long, doesn’t include much Hollywood-style-action (actually none :) but consists mainly of interviews with historians, artists, philosophers and concentrates on the question “What is the influence of Ancient Greece on modern civilization?” .It consists of 13 episodes, each one evolves around a word inherited from Ancient Greek (mathematics, democracy, cosmos, mythology, philosophy, etc)

As 6th grade history teacher I have to parse through lots of historical videos to find ones for my class. There are a lot of great videos that are just boring for my students. Some of the most entertaining and educational videos are from the History Channel series called Engineering an Empire. This informative and engaging series talks about all the great empires of the ancient world. They have experts, maps, computer animations and are usually filmed at the historical sites. My students really seem to get a lot out of these and it holds their attention really well. I recommend checking them out if you are interested in ancient history.
