What Are Some Good Books About Grammar Punctuation And Psychology

Psychology: What does it say about you if you are a grammar nazi?

As with many of the previous posters, I don't like the term 'Nazi'.  Having said that...The first time my wife met my dad (before we were married) she came away saying 'John, your dad has very poor grammar!'Perhaps a little clarity is needed, my wife's second language is English and she worked as an English teacher before moving to Ireland. For me, language is about communicating meaning.  For people learning a language, grammar is a set of rules that set out how the language operates.  Grammar, therefore, becomes important in ensuring that meaning is communicated effectively.I try not to be too much of a stickler for grammar or spelling, but some things do get my goat."They're looking for their dictionaries over there" is a sentence that has the potential to cause havoc in some circles, as would "two times a day is too much"As regards what is says about you if you're identified as a 'Grammar Nazi'? I would guess too picky, possibly inflexible. All of this is to miss the point that language is constantly evolving.  40 years ago, this sentence would have had to begin with the word 'forty', and Google had not yet become a verb.Language will keep changing, and this is likely to go on 4ever.

What is a good book on English grammar, punctuation, and style?

“Elements of Style” by Strunk and White. Short book, 200 or so pages, concise and good for explanation. E. B. White wrote “Charlotte's Web” among others. This book was used as part of an sophomore English course I took 20 years ago and its addages will apply as long as English is a written language. If you are having problems with punctuation, use this technique…Is it the end of a thought, does the sentence make sense? Use a period…Should a comma be here? Extend the pause when you are reading. Does it sound like spoken English? If not, forego the comma. Leave it out…Longer pauses call for a semicolon or a colon, although I usually use colons for lists…Written English should represent spoken English. All of the punctuation is just a means to imply what type of pause should be used in a given, SPOKEN situation. Start thinking This way and it will make your task much simpler…To anyone who may comment on any errors in this post… written in one draft, no rereading, on my phone.

What is psychological reductionism?

Psychological Reductionism is the process of reducing all social activity and behavior to the psychological characteristics of the human actors involved. In other words, say you have a mob of people looting in a white town, and a different mob looting in a black town. You could analyze those two events as a whole, or apply reductionism to study the individual motives of each entity in either groups, to further understand the psychological differences among societies.
