Do you think St Anger is Nu Metal?

No, but thanks to that snare sound I just call it "bad metal"

I sent my St. Anger CD to Metallica's management offices with a note saying the drums were defective. Never heard back from them.

What does the"Nu" in "Nu-Metal" mean?

It's a fancy way of saying New Metal. Basically, it's a modern form of Metal that doesn't really fit into any traditional Metal genre (Thrash, Death Metal, Black Metal, etc) because they combine different types of Metal with other music styles like Rap, Grunge, Punk, etc., so people just label it all as "Nu-Metal" because they don't know what else to call it, I guess.

I, however, hate the term "Nu-Metal", though, because though I love KoRn, Slipknot, etc., to me, there's nothing "Nu" about that type of music. One of my fave bands ever, Faith No More, were doing a similar style way back in 1990...
"Epic" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERTT_sv8s...
(They were way before their time)

So I personally prefer to use the term "Alternative Metal", which seems to be a more accurate description. But that's essentially what it is, though, just a form of Metal that doesn't really fit into any specific category. I guess you could say, like Taco Bell, it thinks outside the box :).

As for people using "Nu-Metal" as a negative, a lot of Metal purists who like stuff like Metallica don't consider bands like Slipknot to be "real" Metal (like Punk purists who like stuff like The Clash don't think Punk-Pop bands like Green Day deserve to be called "Punk"). To me, it's just an ego trip, though, like "my band's more bad.a.s.s than your band", or something. But I don't buy into that. I love Slipknot and Cradle of Filth and I don't feel that either of them is any more or less Metal than the other. They're just different. But I don't consider that to be a bad thing because, at the end of the day, any Metal is still better than Justin Bieber :p.

Since you're also into "Alternative Metal", perhaps you may like some of my other fave bands...

Why is nu metal dead?

I don’t think that it’s really dead per se, but in popularity levels nu metal it’s just a shadow of what it was. At least if we’re talking from an American perspective, because here in Argentina it’s not that uncommon to see Korn or Slipnot T-shirts and nu metal bands. But for the sake of this answer, we’ll talk from an American perspective. You can blame record executives, who seemed to want to sing every single nu metal band they saw, which ended up overflowing the market with bands that sounded exactly the same, with the same jumpdafuckup riffs and angsty lyrics. It’s not that nu metal was the only genre where this happened, but it was kind of egregious in this one.I think one of the reasons is that not a lot of bands survived the genre’s demise. Yeah, bands like Slipknot and Korn managed to keep going with their fans and their style, but they’re an exception in a genre where almost every band ended splitting up or changing their sound. And another reason came from the fact that “nu metal” became a bad word in the traditional metal world. Manufacturated bands popping up every week, respected metal bands (Sepultura, Fear Factory, Machine Head and Slayer, among others) experimenting with this sound just for the sake of proving they were still relevant, the same uber-angsty lyrics repeated over and over again, and the bad publicity that frontmen like Fred Durst ended creating of the genre, are just some of the reasons why the genre isn’t likely to have a reavival anytime soon.

What are some nu metal bands worth listening to?

Definitely Dope. They're one of the more older bands in the genre, but they are pretty authentic to the genre and have quite a few good songs such as Thanks for Nothing, Die MF Die, and Violence. I'd check them out. Have you heard of NOTHINGFACE? They were probably one of the best nu-metal bands to exist. Checking them out would be worth your while. Other bands such as Korn are quite popular, but I think after all the collaboration with Skrillex, I really lost my interest in them. Their older music is good. If you don't know Slipknot, then they are a band to check out- Surfacing, Snuff are good songs. Now, more modern day bands like System of a Down are considered nu-metal, but I don't get the same vibes as I got with Korn on their first album, the same with Slipknot. Perhaps you're more into bands like Limp Bizkit, or Mushroomhead. Here's an article that you might like: What is UR Favorite Classic Nu-Metal Band?? - MetalSucks. Which band do you think was more influential to the heavy metal genre, Bathory or Celtic Frost?

Celtic FrostThey exerted a huge influence on extreme metal and Gothic metal with their experimentation with symphonic, classical, doom metal, and industrial music. This was unusual for any band that started out as black metal. As their influences covered hardcore punk, Gothic rock, and thrash metal meant they were destined to be an outlier in the entire heavy metal scene from their inception.Bathory did lay the blueprint for Scandinavian black metal, played a major role in the development of black metal as a genre, and pioneered Viking metal with their album, Hammerheart, but even Slayer proved to be an even greater influence on the heavy metal scene on the whole.Listen to this song from Into The Pandemonium:Mexican Radio is seen as one of those quintessential post-punk songs and seeing a heavy metal band dabbling with post-punk and therefore, Gothic music, is unique by most standards. Here is another song of theirs from the same album:This song is perhaps one of the first instances of the use of a symphonic song in any heavy metal album. Now compare this to Hammerheart by Bathory:This song may be among the first Viking Metal songs but remember that Viking metal is a niche genre.Their influence will be more notable during their black metal phase as seen in their album - Under the Sign of the Black Mark:This song is called Woman of Dark Desires and it deals with the notorious Hungarian countess, Elizabeth Báthory, who murdered many young women in a bid to preserve her youthful appearance and beauty.Bathory may be an major influence on black metal; but Celtic Frost influenced a whole range of genres ranging from black metal, death metal, and progressive metal, to alternative rock.Even Kurt Cobain of Nirvana were fans of theirs with Mark Tremonti of Creed and Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters and Nirvana fame citing an influence from them!Bathory’s influence clearly pales in comparison to Celtic Frost.
