Styrofoam is one of those materials that doesn’t break down but it can be reused if done properly. If your municipality has bins specifically for styrofoam by all means put it there but never, NEVER put it into bins for recycling of other materials. If burned it produces a highly toxic gas so you would not want it mixed with other materials that are processed with heat.It can be used for packing material, for mixing with soil to keep it aerated, and one of the most interesting uses I have seen is using it to make styrofoam/cement blocks and girders for building.Just as an aside, a home built using these styrofoam/cement forms can be put up in a day, is insulated against both heat and cold and can be carved. I would think it might be an inexpensive way to provide housing for the homeless but there could be drawbacks of which I am unaware.

Some of my colleagues have, and quite recently.Firstly, I should say that being a compulsive hoarder is a clear sign of mental illness, but not necessarily to the point that they need to be detained. So while it is easy to make fun of them, you have to bear in mind that they are ‘not in a good place’ mentally and haven’t been for a long time.I was told that a lady in my area reported some crime, not particularly major, but she reluctantly agreed to see police at her home (she had called from her workplace) that afternoon. They got there and initially couldn’t get an answer at the door until they heard her inside ask them to use the side door as the font one wouldn’t open, so they did.inside the rooms were literally stacked floor to near ceiling with what looked like the contents of a paper recycling bin. Every room. She crawled over the top of the paper/cardboard/unidentified debris and spoke to them, the gap between the top of the pile and the ceiling in places was less then 2 feet. They thought it best to look around as she was a little distressed. Her sleeping area (you couldn’t call it a bedroom) was a mattress laying on top of a dip in the debris, and there was a cleared path to her bathroom, which was just clear enough for her to shower and use the facilities. She had a kitchen but they didn’t tell me what it was like. She was distressed because she was ashamed of her house, she was suffering from depression and the place was just reinforcing that state. But in her mind she could not face starting to clear it and couldn’t help adding to it.The place was a complete firetrap. They ended up trying to signpost her towards help and making a report to social services, but she was functioning, albeit in a depressing environment.Sadly, it is actually quite easy to slip into being a hoarder. It starts with the “I’ll just tuck that away somewhere, it might come in handy” which becomes obsessive. Where it gets to the point of no return depends on the individual.Having seen plenty of cluttered properties, some not far off this state, I have developed an almost pathological hatred of clutter. Is it possible to go the other way?
