How will Appalachia be different 20 years after the end of coal mining?

I must go anonymous on this question. A frank answer may damage some business relationships. Some Quorans can figure out who wrote this. Please do not blow my cover. One bullet cannot replace King Coal in West Virginia . Although coal jobs have been dramatically decreasing – due first to automation, then reduced demand -- it still has strong residual interest mainly due to pension payments and tax receipts. Several emerging trends, however, may reduce the losses then eventually replace coal.1) Natural gas. The same geology that produced coal also produces natural gas deposits. Despite its flaws, natural gas is cleaner and safer than coal. Its pricing is going down. Making the natural gas cost effective would require both increasing demand and key infrastructure – not just roads but natural gas pipelines. Remember that it may be cheaper to access sources in North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Oklahoma, etc.2) Renewable energy – especially wind. Coal comes from inside West Virginia’s mountains. The mountain tops are excellent sites for wind turbines. Required infrastructure includes an upgraded power grid. 3) Data centers. West Virginia has relatively cheap land. Eastern West Virginia is relatively close to the Washington DC Tech corridor (home to AOL and numerous defense contractors). The Morgantown/Clarksburg area is relatively close to the Pittsburgh Metropolitan region. West Virginia offers relatively cheap energy. Upgrading the grid, supplying cheap water, and flat land, however, are in shorter supply. Also, ground travel through the mountains can be time consuming. Each of these can require big investments. We are looking at major, focused infrastructure improvements. Improving the power grid, improving roads and natural gas pipelines all cost big bucks. Thanks for the A2A, Jonathan

Why has President Trump been unable to stop the decline of West Virginia's coal industry?

Because he made promises about an industry he knows nothing about! Obama’s coal regulations undoubtedly hurt the industry, but they’re not the primary factor as to why the mines went out of business. The reason for that is power plants (the primary consumer for coal) has went to natural gas because of the plummet in price and new sources of it have made it in abundant supply. Natural gas is cleaner, safer, easier to use, amd much more enviiromentally friendly. Plus the other reason is the mines that are still operational are doing what’s called “strip mining”. That’s where the coal companies literally cut the top off a mountain and get the coal underneath. This requires much less manpower than the underground mining process. It was comical to me listening to Trump talk about “clean coal” because instead of knowing it is a very technically advanced process, you could tell from the way he described it that he literally thought they took a scrub brush to it! Listen to him talk about clean coal during the WV rallies, it really is amusing. What is not amusing is that he had thousands of coal miners and businesses that rely on coal mines believing they were going back to work, that hadn’t happened. In fact, MORE coal jobs have been lost since Trump was elected, even though in some areas more coal is being produced. It’s because those areas are using strip mining as described earlier. I hope this answered your question

What brake services does Walmart provide?

I believe a Walmart with a shop does full maintenance - rotor/drum replacement, pad/shoe replacement, line flush, etc. They probably won't be able to machine rotors though. From personal experience, I wouldn't have any work done at Walmart, nor most quick-lube style places. Best is if you can find a good mechanic and have him do everything on your car. That said, if you're handy at all, most brake jobs are really simple, and as long as you go slow and use some sense, it can save you quite a bit. A full brake job costs less than $100 in materials if you order from a good, inexpensive part supplier (I use Rock Auto), and even if you don't have any tools, you can get everything you need on sale for under $250. Just one brake job can cost more.

The 4G63.  Hands down not another import motor comes close for the popularity and power.  Being an iron block and closed deck it can reliably make upwards of 500 whp.
