What Are Some Places I Could Volunteer With Animals In Downtown Toronto Or North York Area

Toronto Zoo - how long to see it?

My boyfriend and I are going to Toronto Aug 28 to see a concert at the Molson Amp. We live 4 hours from Toronto so we're taking the train down and staying overnight obviously. We want to visit the Toronto Zoo while there. Our train gets into Toronto at 10am, and we are staying at the Westin Harbour Castle (which is about 10 mins walking from Union Station from what I've been told).

Now obviously we will be taking the subway/bus to the Zoo. The concert is at 7:30pm. I'm assuming by the time we get to the hotel/check in and leave it'll be about 11am (maybe earlier as all we want to do is check in and go straight to the Zoo but I'm giving us time for walking/bus waiting/etc.). I called up TTC and they told me it'll take about an hour and 10 minutes to get to the zoo from our hotel. Again, giving us time, I'd realistically say 12:30 we'd get there.

The concert is at 7:30PM and it's very close to our hotel. We don't mind missing a few minutes of the opening act.

I'm just wondering how long (average) it takes to see the Zoo? I'm sure we won't want to see EVERYTHING, I'm more excited for those animals that you really only see at bigger zoos. Would this realistically be enough time to go there, be satifised and be able to make it back to the Molson Amp? And if yes, what time would you recommend leaving from the zoo to get back for at least 7:45pm?

Thanks. :)

Is the Toronto zoo better then the Detroit zoo?

The Toronto zoo is awesome, much better than Detroit any day.
Encompassing 710 acres, the Toronto Zoo is one of the largest zoos in the world. It is divided into four zoogeographic regions with numerous indoor pavilions and outdoor exhibits. The Zoo is home to over 5,000 animals representing over 460 distinct species. It has garnered global recognition for its achievements in breeding and caring for endangered species, and it is one of the premiere zoos of the world.

What are the best things for York University students to do on weekends?

It depends on what you're in to.Firstly, while York is not a big city by any means, it is very charming and has a good selection of shops and restaurants to suit pretty much anyone. There are also several sights to see, such as the York Minster and Clifford’s Tower, and plenty of places to go for a walk. As well as this there are several theatres in the city, and a couple of museums, including the Jorvik Viking museum. There's also a few shopping outlets that you can reach by bus, the 2 major ones being McArthur Glen and Monks Cross. If you're into clubbing then most of the clubs will be open on Saturday and Sunday, and at least last year, Sunday was Revolution’s official UoY club night. If you still want to go out drinking but aren't that interested in clubs, then there are so many pubs in York. The average cost of a pint according to York Press is £3.15. There are also several bars on campus, with my personal favourite as a member of Concert Band being the Vanbrugh Arms, formerly known as VBar……which leads me onto societies. A lot of societies hold their meetings/rehearsals/practices/etc. at the weekend for obvious reasons. For example, (shameless endorsement) University of York Concert Band holds their rehearsals from 5pm on Saturday in the Jack Lyon’s Concert Hall. As I don't go to many other societies I don't know the specifics, but I do know that the rowing club, FragSoc (gaming), pole-dancing club, one of the other bands, pool & snooker club (not that they'd tell you) and a lot of the sports teams all have sessions and events at the weekends. As well as this, anyone can pay to use the facilities at the Sports Village or Sports Centre. Between the two, there's at least one gym, a pool, squash and tennis courts, an outdoor velodrome, and more. Finally, the weekends are a prime time to catch up on work, sleep, that tv show you watch, etc. and they are also perfect for visiting/meeting up with family and friends. York Train Station is just a bus ride away, so provided you don't live too far from York you can easily go home for the weekend every now and then, or you could visit friends in Newcastle or Leeds or Manchester or whatever.

What role did Canada play in the American Civil War?

At the time of the American Civil War, "Canada" referred to a very small part of what is now part of the country by the same name. The Province of Canada was formed by the 1841 merger of the colonies of Upper Canada and Lower Canada. This came out to what's now Quebec along the St. Lawrence and Ontario along the Great Lakes. The rest of what's now Canada had been very sparsely colonized, and the indigenous peoples of the area were not involved in the American Civil War.At the time Canada, Newfoundland, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island were all British colonies. The UK remained neutral in the American Civil War. There were some elements in Parliament that wished to recognize the Confederacy, but by and large, public opinion in both the British metropole and the colonies was against doing so - to the point where somewhere between 30,000 and 60,000 men from the British colonies in North America volunteered to fight for the Union and some 29 were awarded the Medal of Honor. Furthermore, the British colonies were often the last stop on the Underground Railroad, a role they played before and during the warHaving said that, there were parts of the British colonies that were more sympathetic to the Confederacy, primarily in the east. In 1863, Confederate agents commandeered a Union vessel and docked it in Nova Scotia, almost causing an international incident. The British handed the vessel back to the Union; however, the Confederate agents escaped. This was the "Chesapeake Affair," named for the stolen ship. In late 1864, Confederates used Montreal as a base of operations to raid St. Albans in Vermont. The raiders were pursued back over the border, causing an incident, one that was compounded when the arrested raiders were not extradited. Nevertheless, the situation was resolved diplomatically. That said, probably the largest role Canada played in the American Civil War was economic: the colonies had a wealth of raw resources and agricultural products, vast quantities of which were exported to the Union - the Union had both the money and the ability to transport the goods. The war turned out to be an economic boon to Canada.

Living in Ontario, Canada: Why is living in Brampton so looked down on while everyone wants to live in Oakville/ Mississauga?

The honest truth.I personally do not and will not look down upon people who live in Brampton.Other than living in downtown Toronto for the first year of my life, I have grown up in Mississauga and I know plenty of people from here and Oakville, many of them are white collar workers. These are some of the things I have heard some people who sadly look down upon “Brampton people” say:They think that Brampton is ghettoThey think that there is no multiculturalism, just a bunch of brown and black people (I know some people of South Asian descent even say this and they wouldn't want to move over there because they think there are too many brown people already there and they want to live in a multi-ethnic neighbourhood)They think that due to the city's high volume of South Asian residents that Brampton is really conservativeThey know there are really nice houses in Brampton but they think that the property won't increase in value unlike Mississauga or Oakville where we see some shit houses go for two million easilyBrampton is not fully developed, it's still in developing mode. It is just comprised of houses, malls and factories. Downtown Brampton is tiny. There are not many things young people can do for fun in Brampton.* This is not what I think personally. These are all the things I’ve heard about Brampton.
