What Are Some Ways To Turn Leftovers Into Something Different For The Next Night

Leftovers are a little bit of a dirty word for some people but learning to plan family meals around what you have leftover is an artform. Restaurants do it all the time. The baked potatoes from the night before are the beginnings of the clam chowder the next day, or the twice baked appetizer special. Leftover taco meat gets turned into tortilla soup.. The idea being that you can make a 5lb meatloaf and eat warmed over meatloaf for the next week but who wants to do that.. certainly sounds unappetizing. So you think.. what can I make with meatloaf? meatloaf sandwiches maybe? Think meatball sandwiches only easier to put together cause your meat isn’t round. Cubed up meatloaf makes a awesome shepherds pie! I've even sliced it and egg dipped it with bread crumbs and fried it like country fried steak with eggs for breakfast. Don’t be afraid to get creative and embrace using leftovers in ways you haven't’ considered before. depending on the age of the leftovers consider in what form they might taste the best. If you have fresh roast chicken from the night before might be good to make chicken salad but if its been in the fridge for two days and is looking a little dried out you might want to bone it out and add it to chicken noodle soup. If you have mashed potatoes leftover consider adding a couple eggs some flour, onion powder, parsley, salt and pepper and frying it up for potato pancakes in the morning with a little bit of apple sauce!! If I have a lot of leftover meat but not enough of any one thing to make a meal I usually throw it all in a big fried rice! Add bacon (because bacon is never leftover) and eggs and vegetables. My kiddos get mad now if I don’t make enough rice to have leftovers to fry later. Hope it give you some ideas!! Good Luck and Happy Cooking!

Not one but from two leftover foods!Few months back, we have invited some guests for a dinner. As it is customary in India, they brought some yummy looking oranges.Huge quantity of rice was left after the dinner. Our domestic help had refused take all the rice telling that she and her husband together can not eat that much rice and it would get wasted.“I will take some rice now. Give me the ‘pulihora’ (Rice mixed with some sour fruit/tamarind juice and spices added) tomorrow . Not this plain rice” she said.“Ok agreed” I said. After everyone had left, I decided to taste the oranges as they were too yummy looking. To my utter disappointment, the orange I have tasted was very sour.Second one too! So even if I prepare juice with these oranges, I had to add lot of sugar or sugarfree, which is not desirable. Then an idea struck me.Why not make “Orange rice” with these oranges like we make lemon rice with lemon. So all the leftover rice, and the juice of the oranges was converted to “Orange rice” or you can say “Kamala pulihora”.It was a big hit with my domestic help and husband. I should have clicked the picture, but it never occurred to me.Anyhow it looked somewhat like this:You can follow the recipe shown in this video, but just replace lemon juice with orange juice. But to make this rice, oranges should be really sour. If they are not that sour, add a little lemon juice.lemon rice recipe indian.Edit: People in the comment section are asking about the quantity of orangge juice to be added. That day the leftover rice was thrice the quantity shown in the video. I squeezed the juice of two oranges. It came to about 3/4 cup.I added the juice little by little tasting after every addition. Approximately half cup juice was enough for that rice. The entire juice was absorbed by the rice by next day morning. I added the tempering next day morning (as I always do)So unlike lemons, sourness of the oranges vary. So you have to add little quantity at a time until you are satisfied with the sourness of the rice.Image courtesy: Via Google.

How to turn day into night?

hollywood shoots "day for night" by loading film intended for use in the studio tungsten lighting outdoors. this white balance mis-match turns everything a cool blue color. you can do the exact same thing by manually setting the white balance to indoor or tungsten when shooting outdoors. the effect is improved if you have some night like items in the shot (cars with lights on, street or store lights, etc) and avoid sun shadows (by shooting in shade when possible). if you don't have manual white balance settings, then use a Wratten 80a or 80b blue filter. (thats what the filter threads on the lens are for).

i don't recommend green screen because that will force every shot to be static, no zooms or movement of any kind in either the foreground or background video.

Do you eat leftovers?

Freeze left overs.

Make something the next night. This way I don't have to hear "but we had this last night". But a few nights later.... mwahaha YOU GET LASAGNA AGAIN!

And absolutely with using the extra ingredients. I do this all the time. Wasting food just adds to the bill. I also skimp on ingredients whenever possible, like if I have to use a can of corn in something but I'm only cooking for two I use half a can of corn and be sure that I have a recipe that calls for the other half the next day! :) I love corn, I also throw it in mashed potatoes so people don't skimp on the veggies. ;)

What can I make with leftover sloppy joe meat?

Water it down a little to knock back the tang somewhat and then use it as a sauce (maybe even give it a short blast in the blender if it's too chunky).

Then you can ladle it over some hot dogs (with your choice of other condiments like cheese, onions, mustard, etc). Or put it on a baked potato with some cheese and scallions. Whatever - treat it like a condiment. If you treat it like a sauce like that and keep it in a sealed container, you might stretch that out for a week in the fridge to toss on things you make as you go along.

Most of the other suggestions are good too - chili substitute, stuffed peppers, etc.

How can I get my family to eat leftovers?

There are some foods that are often BETTER the next day, and what I'm talking about is strong spicy foods like Chili and Curry. If you like spicy, then the flavor will marinate into the meat overnight in the fridge, and hot chili becomes hotter. So perhaps what I'm saying here is that I like spicy, but your family is the opposite, they don't like the spicy flavor, and if it sits and soaks in sauce in the fridge they won't eat it because it tastes stronger, so perhaps you learn the opposite lesson and try and make bland tasteless food that doesn't change much in intensity.

Other than that you can work toward better estimating portions that your family will eat, and try and cook just the amount needed. For my family of 3, I need about 6-8oz of meat per person, so I may cook between 1 and 1.5 lb ground beef, chicken, fish or whatever, and it will all be eaten. Or I may cook 2 lb of meat and take out 1/4 portion that I plan to take for lunch to work tomorrow. If noone is signed up to eat it tomorrow, don't cook the extra. I may buy meat in 3 lb pack and then split it in half and freeze the other half to cook another time. That is to say, immediately after shopping, or even at the meat counter as I go shopping, if I know 1.5 lbs feeds my family, I may ask the butcher to give me 5 packs each 1.5 lbs of ground beef. Or if it is really cheaper I may buy larger package and then break it up into 1.5lb per freezer bag before I freeze it.

What can I make with leftover beef stew?

You didn't say what you put in yours. For instance I don't use any potatoes in mine as we like lots of other veggies. But you could scoop some over noodles or biscuits. For the noodle one, depending on how you make yours, you could add a dollop of sour cream and make it like a stroganoff. For the biscuits, just put some over a biscuit half like chicken a la king. Or use toast points if you don't have biscuits.

If your stew is the basic meat, carrots, and potatoes, you could add dumplings or you could load it up with other veggies so it's more of a vegetable soup. If you go with the veggies, you could also throw some small pasta in there and make it more like minestone. Just add more broth or water.

You could also just freeze it and wait until you're ready to have it again. Or a night when you don't feel like cooking. It will thaw fast in the microwave.

What can i make with leftover sloppy joe meat??!!?

Sloppy joe meat is a great leftover to have on hand! You can do so many things with it that allow you to create a completely new and innovative dinner. My family uses the leftovers quite often, and we always have a delicious round two dinner. Some of our favorite ways of using the leftover sloppy joe meat are listed below.

1. Tacos. The meat mixture is great instead of ground hamburger with taco seasoning mix. Use corn chips or doritos as the base instead of taco shells and pile on all your favorite taco ingredients. It creates an original taco salad that is different from the traditional definition and standards of a taco. Buttered corn is a great side dish.

2. Make chili with the leftover meat and eat it over mashed potatoes. It's a classic combination of foods. The sweet sauce from the meat will change up the flavor of your chili and take away some of the spice that might not appeal to your daughter. Sweet chili is equally delicious to a spicy one.

3. Use the meat in your favorite lasagna recipe. Instead of browning hamburger and seasoning it with traditional Italian spices, the meat adds a whole new dimension of flavor. Make sure to use lots of cheese in the lasagna like normal! Cheddar cheese is a great addition as well and pairs nicely with the sweet flavor from the sloppy joe meat. The two complement each other. It's sort of like a chili lasagna! This is definitely one of the most highly requested dinners at my house.

4. The leftover meat makes a great "condiment" for burgers or hot dogs. It's similar to a chili dog or chili burger but with different spices and seasonings. Shredded cheese is once again delicious on top. Have baked beans or macaroni and cheese as a quick side dish.

5. My final suggestion for the sloppy joe mixture would be as a topper for baked potatoes. Have a loaded baked potato bar for dinner. Include things such as the chili, bacon bits, diced onion, sour cream, butter, broccoli bits, and shredded cheese. It's a simple, delicious, and creative dinner idea!
