What Are The Basic Chords For Piano

What is G/A chord on piano?

Jonathon, I believe what you are asking is the name of this chord...is that correct?

If so, it is properly called a G9 (pronounced Gee ninth) chord and when written in that form it does not specify where the ninth degree note is positioned within the chord.....that is which inversion of the chord is intended.

However, when the chord is written G/A, it is indicating that the "ninth" degree is to occupy the Bass voice of the chord.

So, the G specifies the triad (G, B, D) and the slash A indicates that the "A" note must occupy the Bass voice only. In other words the inversion is specified.

If you read conventional music notation from the staff, all of this is clear as the note intended in the Bass voice will, of course, be written on the staff.

By the way, this is not just a piano notation but is for any harmonic instrument such as harp, Guitar, etc.

Explain to me what is a V7 chord in piano.?

Sure, no problem.

The V7 chord is built on the 5th degree of the scale (also called the dominant). So let's look at the notes of the B-flat major scale:
Bb, C, D, Eb, F, G, A

The fifth degree is F, so we will start there. In other words, F will become the root of the V7 chord. This kind of seventh chord is made with a major chord with an added minor seventh. So, let's start with the F major chord:
F A C

Then add the minor seventh. If you aren't sure what that is, it will be two half-steps down from F on the piano: F -> E -> Eb

So your F7 (V7) chord is: F A C Eb.

There are two main reasons why it sounds unresolved. In tonal music you want to resolve to the tonic, or first note of the scale (Bb in this case). The third of the V7 chord is the leading tone of the scale, in other words it leads to the tonic (A leads to Bb in this case).

The other reason is that it contains a tritone between the 3rd and 7th (between A and Eb in the case of F7). The tritone is a dissonant interval. Dissonance creates tension in the music which demands to be resolved by returning to the I chord (Bb major), for example.

How do you transpose Guitar Chords to Piano?

Well, assuming you know the notes on the piano:
- for major chords, start on the tonic note (doh) and go up one third (to mi) and then another third (to soh), so C major is C E G.
- for minor chords, start on the tonic note (doh) and go up one minor third (to maw), and then to the dominant (soh), so C minor is C Eflat G
- for dominant seventh chords, you add the seventh (te), so G7 is G B D F

Those are the commonest chords, there are hundreds more.
Hope this helps to get you started anyhow!

How do I match up guitar chords with piano notes?

Notes are universal, a G on guitar, bass, piano, violin and a banjo is still a G. If you want your piano and guitar to sound good together than you should look up some songs you know that has both instruments and look at how they were written. You could also just start by writing a song on either piano or guitar and than have the other follow. Hope that answers your question :)
