What are some good NGOs, preferably involving teaching young children or protecting the environment, in Hyderabad where one can volunteer for a few hours every week?
Make A Difference! :D We're a group of people who work with kids living in shelter homes/orphanages (that we call "centers") and teach them during the weekends. I would highly recommend your friend to join it! :) It's the best way to spend weekends, trust me. You will not only be helping kids learn English but will also widen your network. You will get to meet brilliant people - kids as well as volunteers. MAD is an amazing organization to work with! :DWe're spread across 23 cities in India, and we teach under-privileged kids. It's 100% volunteer work, so do not expect any payment. You can choose to teach them on any one day of the weekend for two hours. However it's important to meet the other volunteers of the center to discuss your classes and the kind of difficulties you're facing and the progress you've made. That requires an additional hour at least. So you'd be required to make a commitment of at least 3-4 hours on one day of the weekend for a year. We ask for a year's commitment because the kids get attached to you easily, and it will be really difficult for them to let go of you if you break your commitment. So do tell your friend to please think about them before she decides to promise us her commitment. :)To know more about MAD and its projects, visit the website - MAD - Make A Difference. We only ask that you know basic English and can make a commit to teach for a year. However there are other internship roles that you could apply for, again for a year, in MAD, if not teaching.
