What Are The Best Running Shoes For Shin Splints

Best running shoes to fight shin splints?

The only way that shin splints can be caused by shoes is if the shoes you're running in aren't compatible with your foot or stride. The way you eliminate that is by having your shoes fitted by a professional at a running shop. It could be that you're running in neutral shoes when you need stability or motion control shoes. You won't know until you have a fitting done. There is no particular type or brand of shoes that will prevent shin splints in general. It's about having the right shoe for YOU.

If you're running in the right kind of shoes for your feet, then shin splints are more likely caused by one of a few things:

1) Being a new runner / returning to running after an extended break. If you've just now started running again, this is completely possible, and the pain should go away in a week or two if you have no other issues. In the mean time, you can treat the pain with ice or cold water after every run and an anit-inflammatory like ibuprofen or aleve.

2) Trying to run too much, too soon. If you're only running 1/2 a mile a day at this point, I doubt this is the problem, but you could try running only every other day for a while & see if that helps. If it does, then gradually add back in the extra runs once your legs have had more time to adjust to running.

3) Biomechanical / form problems. Again, I would not expect to see this in someone who is only running 1/2 miles a day; even if you did have form problems, that shouldn't be enough time for them to really cause shin splints. But it's not completely impossible.

4) Core weakness (glutes / hips / abs). This is a really common cause of shin splints in runners. Weak core muscles cause pelvic instability, which results in trying to absorb the force from running into your lower legs rather than your core muscles. But again, I'd expect to see this in someone running 30 miles a week or so, not 3.5.

If you rule out shoes and the pain doesn't go away in a couple of weeks or with cutting back on the number of days you run per week, then I would see a sports medicine doctor, because it may not actually be shin splints.

Good luck!

What is the best running shoe for people who get shin splints frequently?

Shin splints are usually caused by excessive force and the muscles swellings around the shin bone. This can cause inflammation around the bone. It can also be caused by stress fractures. Stress fractures are more serious injury and would require rest. Also make sure you have enough calcium in your diet and your getting plenty of vitamin D and sunshine. This helps you absorb the calcium to prevent this. However assuming it's excessive force. This usually disappear after a few years of training as your muscles get stronger and bones stronger. Rather than just shoes I would suggest you run off pavement, a soft trail, treadmill or incorporate some elliptical. But also RICE rest, ice compression like long socks or tights and elevate can help with inflammation. Any good cushioned shoes will help.

What is the best running shoes for shin splints?

Since nearly all shin splints in distance runners are linked with over-striding, getting a shoe that helps you to not over-stride will be the best running shoe for shin splints.A shoe with any heel elevation will be heavier and thicker in the back half of the shoe and therefore encourage you to over-stride/land with a harsh heel strike which your body is not designed to.Since you are likely used to cushioned shoes, a cushioned but Zero Drop shoe is going to your best bet as it will give you the cushion you are used to but the Zero Drop will help you to land in a way that puts less pressure on your shins. Personally I would recommend starting with the Altra Torin or Paradigm, depending on how much support you are used to (Paradigm has a lot).Along with shoes that will help you to land better, I recommend keeping your elbows behind your hips, keeping your steps fast, and running proud with your hips and chest forward and not bending at the waist.Keep in mind that of the 204 scientific studies done on over-pronation the last 25 years, only 2 have shown even a weak link to injuries. Scientifically speaking, there is almost no evidence that a shoe that “helps” with pronation will do anything to help you.More here: Treating Shin Splints for Distance RunnersHope that helps!

When I'm running I keep getting shin splints?

Before you go running, always make sure you stretch. Especially stretches that are targeted at the shins. Also try getting new trainers, that might prevent you from getting them again.

But the thing is, shins splints only hurt when you're either walking or running at a slower pace. Usually the faster you run, the less you feel it so you shouldn't feel it when you're racing.

Don't try to run through them, it'll only make it worse and you might end up with a fracture in attempt to run through them. You should try to limit how much you run to only about 1-2miles a day and on grass. But talk to your coach about it and he/she will tell you exactly what to do. Remember to ice them when you get at home too.

What can I do to prevent/get rid of shin splints when running/exercising?

I had shin splints two times. First, when I made big progress as for my walking- as the student I prefer to walk a lot than public communication or so :)Second, but for short time, when I skipped my two basic exercises:so, my way to prevent s.p is doing after every running small stretching:this one bieganie.pl - Trening and bieganie.pl - Trening. This links are in Polish language, and as for first exercise it is about hamstring, and second is about quadriceps. You can easily find it on English websites. That two exercises for me are sufficient :)

Do nike free runs give you shin splints?

Hi Ashley,
There are many shoes made specifically for people with flat feet. Flat feet have weakened foot muscles and therefore need arch support and would benefit from daily stretching exercises. Below is a link for a bit more detail on the best shoes for flat feet.

What basketball shoes is the best for me,my shin splints is trigger when i jump a lot..btw im guard position..?

I would recommend buying sports insoles with your basketball sneaker. I am not a fan of crazy lights or anything of that nature because of the lack of comfort and support that they provide.

If I were you, I'd go with a good pair of Jordan's with sports insoles to give extra protection and shock absorption that comes from running and jumping
