What are the best rock albums of the 1990s?

10.) Cake - Fashion Nugget - Dry, snarky, spoken word lyricism that somehow left out fuzzy distortion but fused jazz-melody catharsis into a delightful experience for the listener.9.) Toadies - Rubberneck - Their sophomore release - though far from sophomoric - proved that post-grunge rock could be just as fun and emotional without the flannel.8.) Weezer - Blue Album - Catchy tunes, crunchy guitars and a touch of 90's angst brought Weezer to the forefront of what many would call "college rock."7.) Sublime - Sublime - Blended punk and reggae into a much needed reprieve from LBC's gangster ridden anthems of the old skool. Palm trees have never swayed so gently in the breeze amidst a riot!6.) Primus - Sailing The Seas Of Cheese - Underground funk pioneers from the bay area set their sites on the good, the bad and the charmingly bizarre.5.) The Wallflowers - Bringing Down The Horse - Bob Dylan's propagated namesake lays down a brilliant tale of loss and love without stodgy, over emotional musicianship. 4.) Pearl Jam - Ten - Their first album and best seller. Hard to compile a 90's album list without it, or any album list for that matter.3.) Red Hot Chili Peppers - Blood Sugar Sex Magik - Mother's Milk wasn't a 90's album, so I believe one would have to pick between BSSM and Californication. The latter is their most commercially successful album selling 15 million worldwide, but I have to go with BSSM simply because it's that original, classic Chili Peppers sound that was so inspiring. 2.) Rage Against The Machine - Rage Against The Machine - Caustic, scathing and completely in-your-face, RATM really nailed fusing rap and rock together into an almost tangible movement of sound that caught the attention of politicians and subverts everywhere. 1.) Nirvana - Incesticide - Nevermind, although heralded as the 90's best, never quite stood out as really reflecting Nirvana or early-90's angst to their die hard fans. Nevermind, was a commercial success but not nearly as good as Incesticide.Honorable MentionsJane's Addiction - Ritual de lo HabitualGreen Day - NimrodPresidents of the United States of America -  Self-TitledBush - Razorblade SuitcaseBeck - Odelay! They Might Be Giants - FloodNine Inch Nails - The Downward SpiralCreed - My Own PrisonMetallica - Black AlbumMr. Bungle - California

Scorpions then STP then Motley Crue

All from their first album. I didn't really like their second album.

I liked Scott better in Stone Temple Pilots.

I think The Smashing Pumpkins and Metallica were the two best rock bands of the 90's. What do you think?

I love both bands top ten for sure. Metallica I think it their prime in the 80's, after the black album I got a little disinterested in them. But kill em all, ride the lightning, and master of puppets, those albums were damn near perfect. The rest are good but those three rock. Now as far as nineties music goes, most of you will disagree with me completely but whatever. Out of all those bands, the ones that stand out to me are nirvana, pearl jam, stp, Soundgarden, Alice in chains, and the smashing pumpkins. Now this is going to piss a lot of people off but I'm just going to say it, nirvana and pearl jam are over rated. Don't get me wrong they were great bands, who did great things, I have bleach and nevermind on vynil so I'm a big nirvana fan and I love pearl jam too. Just so nobody gets butthurt I think Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder are awesome, and I mean that with every shred of honesty I have they're great. But... They are over rated, they deserve a lot of credit but not as much as they get. I think Soundgarden stp and the smashing pumpkins are better (I'll exclude alice in chains because I only know facelift and dirt). I think Chris Cornell is the best lead singer from the nineties, hands down, no contest he's fucking awesome, along with Soundgarden. And Stp, they're albums were all pretty decent after their big successes purple and core, I think they're consistently good. Pearl jam's albums are good but I can only really listen to ten and vitalolgy, and occasionally lost dogs and vs. The smashing pumpkins are one of my all time favorites, I think that they made solid music, that was original and has stood the test of time. Siamese dream and Mellon collie are 2 of the best albums from the nineties, and one could argue in rock music as a whole. And the smashing pumpkins still put out great music. They just write great stuff and don't try to please the crowd by doing what's popular. I saw them at red rocks they were phenomenal, easily outplayed Marylyn Manson on their end times tour.

What is the greatest band of the 80's and 90's?

This is purely my opinion, of course, but my votes for the three best bands of this era are The Police (80’s), Stone Temple Pilots (90’s and beyond) and R.E.M. (entire period). I listen to STP the most of these three, by a good margin, so they would be my vote for the single best band. I really regret not recognizing how good STP were earlier, so that I could have seen them live at their peak (1999), but at that time, I was much more into jazz fusion music, so they didn’t quite fully register on my music radar. There’s a band I want to give special mention to, since many people haven’t heard of them - the New Zealand band Split Enz. They had some great songs, especially “One Step Ahead”, which is one of my favorite 80’s songs overall. Neil Finn, the musical center of Spit Enz, went on to form Crowded House, which had another of my top 80’s songs: Don’t Dream It’s Over.Another special mention is the R.E.M. album “Murmur”. I think it’s one of the best albums of the 80’s, and it’s very inspired and original. But while we’re in the 80’s, I want to mention what is probably my vote for best album of that decade, although it emerged right at the beginning, in November, 1980 - Steely Dan’s Gaucho album. “Babylon Sisters” is a masterpiece of popular music, and is another great example of the way Steely Dan were able to merge high art and wide appeal, which extremely few musical groups have managed to do.I can’t leave without mentioning another of the greatest albums of the 80’s - Donald Fagen’s The Nightfly. If you don’t know this album, do yourself a huge favor and check it out. It’s hard to categorize, but is something like pop with a jazz flavor raised to the highest level. Of course, it’s not an obscure album, by any stretch, but I bet a lot of younger people are unaware of it. Also, it sounds completely fresh and relevant even today. It’s timeless.
