Although the Cobra comes with a claim of 390 bhp, I still see the Z06 spank them. Why, Im a Ford man and I hate that. That is a tough question to answer because many of these cars were detuned from the factory for reasons such as insurance, warrantee and federal regs. Cars in 1957 were able to make 1 horsepower/ cubic inch so 10-15 years later for the factory to claim a 426/427/428 didn't make >430 HP is ridiculous. On paper the Pontiac 455 or Chevy 454 should have had the edge due to shear cubic inches. The SOHC Ford 427 had the most potential on paper followed by the Ford Boss 429 hemi or Chrysler 426 Hemi. The Ford 427 SOHC was never really available to the average customer. The Boss 429 was hardly ever developed and the dual quad cross ram 426 was very detuned from the factory. The lightest car to get a 427 was probably the two seater Shelby Cobra and they were not detuned. Two were build with Paxton superchargers one sold to Bill Cosby and one to Caroll Shelby. I am a little partial to the Hemi Dodge Dart. Same set-up as the Road Runner, Cuda, Charger etc but the lightest car to have a hemi.
