What Are The Forms Of Leprosy

Is there a cure for Leprosy?

Yes, there is a cure. Leprosy is caused by the Mycoplasma bacteria, and since it is a bacterial infection it can be treated, quite easily actually.

A multi-drug approach is used, with Rifampin and Dapsone used to block enzymes that the bacteria uses to make folic acid. Thalidomide (a drug that used to be used to prevent morning sickness until it caused birth defects) is also used.

Leprosy isn't extremely contagious, however. Most people acquire it by repeated contact with affected respiratory droplets. It occurs mainly in third world countries.

It affects the outside of nerve cells, and white blood cells rush to help fight the infection making granulomas - the bumps on the skin associated with leprosy.

What is the name of leprosy virus?

(m)

Leprosy is caused by the organism Mycobacterium leprae. It is not very contagious (difficult to transmit) and has a long incubation period (time before symptoms appear), which makes it difficult to determine where or when the disease was contracted. Children are more susceptible than adults to contracting the disease.

Is leprosy contagious?

There were 2 forms of leprosy. One was contageous and one was not. On Malokai, many people with this disease live. It is said they are not contageous. Still, as all Hawaiians seem to know, newborn babies are never left on the island. When it is time for a mother to deliver, she is taken to another island to have her baby. Once the baby is born, she is returned to Malokai, and the baby stays on the other island. This makes me think that some contageon is still alive.

Leprosy Precaution ?

I am a deacon of a small church. Recently a homeless person visited church, who I believe has a severe case of lepromatous leprosy. I do not believe the person has medical treatment.

After church I sprayed the seat with lysol and will throw away the vaccum bag after vaccuming that area. Is this sufficient? What precautions should I take should that person visit again?

Difference between lupus and leprosy?

Hi Jessica,

These 2 diseases are totally different...

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disorder that can affect the skin, joints, kidneys, and other organs. Symptoms vary from person to person, and may come and go. There is no known cure for lupus at this time, although there are some treatments to help cope with the symptoms of lupus.

Leprosy is an infectious disease that has been known since biblical times. It is characterized by disfiguring skin sores, nerve damage, and progressive debilitation. Leprosy is curable nowadays thanks to antibiotics that are able to kill the bacteria that causes the disease.

Hope that helps,

Johanna

What is the difference between the biblical leprosy and the skin disease vitiligo?

Why even people ask this question it is so baseless to link two together. Leprosy and vitiligo has absolutely nothing to do with each other. . Hundreds of deseases of skin, why vitiligo is linked with leprosy. Leprosy in past has more to do with social stigma, it is thought to be a punishment from God to a sinner and sac religeous people so affected people were socially boycotted and live in isolation and humiliation. In reality it is a chronic infection of body by mycobacterium leprae, primarily involving skin and nerve. It is infectious. Vitiligo is a desease of absent pigment formation (melanin) responsible to give dark colors to skin. It is believed to be an autoimmune disease. It is absolutely non infectious.

Do leprosy and vitiligo have similar symptoms? Does it occur in only poor people?

TL;DR - No & no.In simple terms, Leprosy is a bacterial infection and is contagious. It primarily affects the nerves of the extremities, the lining of the nose, and the upper respiratory tract. Leprosy produces skin sores, nerve damage, and muscle weakness. On the other hand, Vitiligo is an autoimmune condition in which melanocytes, the skin pigmentation, are destroyed, resulting in white patches on the skin. It is not contagious or infectious at all.Leprosy is treatable and even curable. Vitiligo has no known cause and hence no known cure for it has been found, though there are certain treatments that may be able to contain the condition. However, the sores caused due to leprosy appear pale in colour, and hence may be confused with Vitiligo.Certain researches point to Leprosy being predominant amongst poverty stricken population, while Vitiligo being an autoimmune condition, can strike anyone.Source -Leprosy Symptoms, Treatments, History, and CausesLeprosy - WikipediaVitiligo: Get the Facts on Causes and TreatmentVitiligo - Wikipedia
