What Are The Job Prospects For A Medical Biller/coder

How can you find a work-from-home medical coding and billing job?

As a stay at home mom I recommend "Medical Coding" as a wonderful work from home option. Yes, you will need training. You can't just code medical records without having proper training. However, this is a real and promising career. I used to work for "Career Step" and they have an awesome Medical Coding course.http://www.referral.careerstep.c...Their training is done online and is self-paced. You could finish the program in 4 months but 6 months is probably more realistic. They do however give you up to a year to get it all done. Their program is approved by the American Health Information Management Association and the American Academy of Professional Coders. They work with companies such as CIOX Health, Lexicode, OS2-HCS, TrustHCS, Inovalon, Mckesson that hire their grads to work from home right out of the program. The average salary for this career is about $40,000. Their entire program including books, instructors and job assistance is around $3,000 and they offer sweet payment plans. If you want more info, reference links or have questions let me know @ katherine.b.ashby@gmail.com

Medical assistant/medical coder and biller?

Stick with medical billing and coding. Although the biggest thing will be acquiring certification. If you are able to pass the CCS (certified coding specialist- more so used if you want a position in a hospital) or CCS-P (certified coding specialist-physician based- used in doctors offices) you will be able to acquire a lot of work as a coder. Im not sure about billing because im actually going through a medical coder training program because if you dont know already although medical coder and medical billing are closely related they are 2 different fields. Coders generally make more than billers. If you are not able to pass the CCS or CCS-P job prospects will be difficult because that is the certification that everyone is look for whereas a medical assistant all you need basically is the certificate to get a job.
My mom is an RN in a hospital and she says there is a few MA job openings (they need the nurses to do higher level training responsibilities).vA friend just got her certificate and got a job at a hospital but she only makes about 23,000 whereas a coder would earn around 35,000 starting (sometimes even more but this is the average). So if you feel confident at excelling in billing and coding stick with it because MA get paid to clean dirty patients and fold sheets and they make horrible money. My aunt is a CCS in a hospital and she makes 50,000 and she also does per diem work on the weekend where she earns anywhere between 100-5000 on the weekend. You do the math.

How is the future of a medical coder in India?

In future the Medical Coders will have a golden opportunists in India. There is more scope to get into Medical Coding field. There are many jobs in Medical Coding with salary packages. so, I suggest to join Medical Coding. There are many Institutes in Medical Coding in which Clinizen is best for providing Medical Coding Training in Hyderabad and also providing CPC Certification and Placements.

What is medical billing and coding, and is it easy?

Medical billing involves everything from getting authorization for patient visits, collecting co-payments, submitting claims and reports to the insurance companies, posting payments, writing off discounts and billing patients for unpaid amounts. One can even be involved in following up on unpaid claims and appealing denied claims. Usually the smaller the office the greater the variety of duties. Overall the outlook is good.

All insurance payments depend upon coding the procedure (what was done) and the diagnosis (why it was done). In simple cases the doctor provides the code for you and so the information simply needs to be entered into the computer and the claim generated and submitted even on paper or electronically. General medical insurance billing and coding can get intricate as the laws are constantly changing but is comparatively easy.

Now the most challenging is coding from patient records. It involves the coder reading the patient's chart and abstracting (taking out) all the diagnoses and procedures performed. It can get very intricate and difficult. I have taught medical billing and coding for several years. Virtually all my students could grasp the basics of billing and coding. However, only a very few had the aptitude for coding. Not to say that the other students couldn't do advanced coding, but they had to work harder for it.

Right now the big money is in hospital billing and coding rather than doctor office billing and coding. Hospital coding has been exploding in recent years and I believe it will continue as the baby boomers continue to reach 65. I can't be completely sure of this in case the health bill that was passed really eventually goes into effect.

If you go into billing know that you can eventually have your own business. However, I highly recommend that you work for someone else first, learn from them and make your mistakes on their dime before you venture out on your own.

Should you decide to go into coding as a profession get certified as soon as you can. Be very careful because you can be held liable for errors as some can appear to be insurance fraud.

Best of luck to you.
