What Are The Signs That A Teenager Can Be Depressed

Signs of teenage depression...?

I'm not sure if I'm 'depressed' . I guess its cause my mom says I'm only 13 and have nothing to be depressed about.

-I never feel like txting my friends back. (i used to LOVE txting...)
-Don't feel like going to practices for my sport teams.
-Either ALWAYS eating or not eating enough.
-Hiding alone in my room.
-Always on my iPod.
-Ignoring my family.
-Only talking to my dog (awkward, I know..?)

What should I do? Does this even sound like depression? Arg...

Thanks, 10 points best answers!

Teenagerism or signs of depression?

No. Although, it does increases the risk of you experiencing it, depression ( or any other mental illnesses for that matter) are not necessarily heredity.

Your thoughts are to a certain extend normal. As long as they are not consuming you 24/7 and/or preventing you from living your day to day life, then they are, in my opinion, nothing to be overly concerned about.

It is when you start acting on those thoughts that you know you have a problem.

As for telling your parents, that is a decision that you are going to have to make. One that I suggest you think carefully about. Obviously if you feel that you are developing depression, you should consult your parents, but what concerns me is the fact that you do not know. If it is just "teenagerism" ( cool word by the way ) do you really want to worry them ? My main concern is that, taking into consideration that depression has been known to run in your family, they will overreact and make things worse for you.

I have got a 15 year old little sister and I know that if she told me she felt suicidal, I would probably end up being slightly paranoid and checking up on her constantly, which would probably annoy her beyond believe - and there is no history of any mental illnesses in our family.

Why do many teenagers have a 'depressed' phase?

Individuality.I love psychology so I have learnt the basics of how it works , and this how this works.I am a teenager and I face this on a weekly bases. My peers find self diagnosis and mental health a 'joke' and something to be 'cool' about.“Ugh , my table is sooo clean , omg. I am so OCD, lol”No you aren't. You're just organised.“Ughhh. I can't finish my home work! I keep on watching YouTube, lmfao I am so ADHD.”HELL NO! You're a procrastinator.“I am so depressed today. Life sucks. I suck. I am so ugly.”Oh boy, don't get me started on this. You aren't depressed , you are low. Depression is a state which goes on for months and is diagnosed by psychologists. Your life doesn't suck, you just want attention. Don't abuse mental health to seek attention. This is general. Introversion and anti-social behaviour (I know introversion≠Antisocial) is also suddenly cool. We , teenagers , have started trying so hard to look individual and different that we fake things.I regularly find quotes like “I wear a mask of smiles to hide my tears.” On Instagram , if you were really doing that , you wouldn't post about it.The problem is that with the internet , fake IQ tests and self diagnosis has become so easy that Everyone does it. Everyone believes that they're capable of doing what psychologists take 4 years to learn. The biggest problem is that when you educate them how it works , they call you a boring nerd lecturer and go on ignorantly.Truly, ignorance is bliss. Had I never known how this works , I'd have never pulled my hair out of annoyance on this.Post Script: I understand that teenagers do go through depression. Most of them don't know about it. None of them post about it. NO ONE AT ALL seeks attention using it. If you think you are depressed/mentally ill go to a psychologist. Do not self diagnose. Would you self diagnose yourself for leukaemia?

Is depression a phase of teenage life?

Depression is Depression.Just because you’re a teenager doesn’t mean you’ll have Depression for the duration of your teenage years. However, if you are diagnosed with Depression it’s not just going to be a temporary thing that only exists at a certain point in your life - you’ll battle with it forever. However, most teenagers will experience feelings similar to Depression, but it’s not full on Depression.I believe at points every teenager will experience some form of Depression because it’s the hardest time in a kids adolescent life; subsequently, it will pass - unless diagnosed.

What are some signs that a teenager is suffering from depression?

I AM NOT A THERAPIST. THIS IS NOT ADVICE. IT IS INSIGHTS INTO HOW I DEAL WITH THIS ISSUE. I HAVE SEEN THAT A PROFESSIONAL THERAPIST IS THE BEST FIRST CHOICE FOR DEALING WITH DEPRESSION.I put your question into a search engine and got this link...  There are probably lots of others. Learn the Signs of Depression in Teens and How You Can HelpOne of many things I do with people I suspect are very depressed and moving toward self-defeating behavior is get them to make a verbal contract with me that they will not hurt themselves before talking with me first. Even if it takes them hours, days, weeks or months to track me down to talk with me.  This contract creates a delay in their impulse to hurt themselves such that they have time to calm down and regain rational thinking. It also lets them know that someone cares and is there for them from that day forward. It also provides me an opportunity to help them get professional help ASAP.I also tell them that suicide is not natural and there is at least a 50/50 chance that the pain they become exposed to after killing themselves is far worse than what they will ever experience while alive, and that that much greater pain could easily never end.I believe that one of the strongest attractions toward suicide is the completely unfounded belief that suicide will allow them to escape the very deep emotional, spiritual, and physical pain of depression. There is no evidence whatsoever that suicude brings an end to the pain; none at all.

Why do teenagers all think they're depressed?

And why is teenage "depression" so apocalyptic? I'm fourteen, and really I can't stand teenagers. They're an irrational, melodramatic lot that mistake hormones for actual feelings. I know far too many kids that think they're depressed, and I KNOW that none of them actually are. I know what depression looks like, all too well. My father suffers from severe Seasonal Affective Disorder, and my mother is a counselor for the public Mental Health. Everyone on my fathers side of the family is prone to mental illness. I've been around Mental Health professionals all my life, and I know quite a bit about these things. It really annoys me that my friends have the nerve to think that because they had a bad day they're depressed, have they not heard of hormones? Well, they're always in love or depressed.
It shocked me the other day on Y!A, I answered a question that a teen asked about thinking he himself was depressed. To me, the kid sounded very stressed and not like himself. So I merely suggested trying to eat healthily get lots of sun and just try and stay calm with all the stress going on. I then read the other answers, the majority of which were along the lines of this, "OMG! You need to see a doctor right away! You could totally be depressed, maybe you need medication!!!!"
...
Honestly, this kid did not sound clinically depressed to me in the least, yet everyone was treating it as this huge thing that could completely destroy him. A stable human being is not that fragile. It baffles me the way the notion of depression is treated in this society, please tell me that some people still have reasoning skills.

How can parents tell if their teenager is depressed or just being moody?

Raising Humans During their Almost Adult Years can be hard! My son is 20 and I still want to mother/smother him all the time! The major symptoms of clinical depression are as follows:Persistent sadness and/or irritability. This may include mood swings that seem out of proportion to the circumstances; episodes of moping and crying; withdrawal and isolation; fatigue and loss of enthusiasm or interest in favorite activities; poor school performance; and outbursts of anger and overt acting out.Painful thoughts that manifest themselves in relentless introspection, a negative self-concept, persistent anxiety and a sense of hopelessness.Physical symptoms such as insomnia, changes in appetite, headaches, dizziness, nausea, heart palpitations, abdominal cramps and episodes of shortness of breath. In rare cases, a severe case of depression may also involve delusional thinking, including visual and auditory hallucinations. This is not merely depression but a form of psychosis, a serious disorder of neurochemical functions in the brain. If you feel your child is exhibiting signs of depression, then please see their doctor, your pastor, or a good therapist for assistance. Good luck!
