I got 20 horror movies at Walmart the other day and was just wondering which ones are good and which ones are stupid. So can you guys rate these on a scale of 1(so cheesy it makes me want to kill myself) to 10(Couldn't sleep for weeks!)? Also I'm the kind of guy who laughs at the idiocy of people in horror movies, which ones are the funniest?

Why do people like horror movies?

I'm a huge horror movie fan. I've always loved them since I was a kid.

The appeal in horror movies lies in their excitement and danger. There's a real thrill in being thrilled. Some people enjoy being scared because it provides a surge of adrenaline (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Halloween). Others like to be disgusted or revolted because it challenges their appetite or their "strength" (Saw, Hostel, Night of the Living Dead, Dead Ringers). And others just like to experience disturbing events because it gives them an opportunity to peek into the world that no ones has ever returned from: lunacy (Shutter Island, Girl Interrupted).

Horror movies appeal to our fantasy-yearning side. We WANT to experience horror and thrill because it's an exciting experience that doesn't happen to us everyday, from the safety of our sofas. Today's society is too safe and too politically correct, so horror movies are a form of escapism.
But horror movies also appeal to our taboo side. We want to experience things that we're not allowed to experience otherwise in real life. Things like cannibalism, torture, mutilation, ingestion of the "unsavoury" etc. This is often known as "body horror" and appeals to our sense of disgust.

There is also a category of horror films that needs its own titles and that's supernatural horror. The reason why these have become so increasingly popular (The Exorcist, Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity, Exorcism of Emily Rose, The Amityville Horror) is because of the atmosphere they create. Supernatural horror is scary not because of what you see, but because of what you DON'T see. It's the possibility that there could be something life threatening that we can't even see.

At the end of the day, horror movies are all about the experience. We all watch them for different reasons, but it's always about the exciting experience.

What is the title of these horror movies?

1.) Rest Stop (2006): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0787505/

Summary:
"The film follows Nicole Carrow, a young woman who is threatened by a maniac serial killer, after her boyfriend Jess, is abducted in a rest stop."

Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tOMfxQioD...

2.) It sounds like the remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003) where he has the two brothers hanging in the garage and wraps one of the brother's face in Saran Wrap to get the other one to talk: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0324216/

Summary:
"A group of friends passing through are stalked and hunted down by a deformed killer with a chainsaw in order to sustain his poor family who can only afford to eat what they kill."

I tried to find that scene but it's not on youtube. Hopefully you'll recognize the movie by the trailer.

What are the scales used to get the horror movie sound?

Spooky tracks like the ones used in horror movies often use the minor scale, especially intervals like the Minor 3rd, Minor 6th, etc. They also use augemented 4ths, augemented 5ths and all sorts of diminshed and other scales. They use chords built up on these intervals.Sometimes, they even go out of scale, to create a dissonant sound, which does sound scary if used correctly. They might even use the Phrygian Dominant scale, or even some Arabic scales sometimes.

What are the horror movies similar to P.T. game?

PT was originally slated to be part of the Silent Hill franchise, so that’s a strong start - more specifically, SH1, 2, and 3. And I personally recommend starting with 2, as it doesn’t actually require knowing the thread started by 1 and finished in 3. SH Shattered Memories has some of that feel too by trading in purposefully clunky combat for pure adrenaline running, and is also a self-contained plot.Similarly, there are the Siren games, which have little to no combat at all and instead are more of puzzle games in extremely tense situations - your primary ability is seeing through the nearest enemy’s view, so you use that to determine where they are and how to avoid them entirely.Newer than that is Layers of Fear, which is still on Steam for a good low price. Amnesia is still available, and there are many MANY player-made scenarios within the engine. The Evil Within 1 and 2 have some of those elements in them but rely a lot more on the Resident Evil style run-and-gun, and the mystery is entirely ruined by the end of the first game. RE7 does come closest to the harsh psychological creeping horror of Silent Hill, but it’s still strongly not-supernatural, most everything is explained, and is something more of a sendoff of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre than anything else. (The engine is frankly amazing tho.)If you still have your Gamecube or an emulator, I do highly recommend Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, and to read as little as possible about the game before you play it.

Are These Horror Movies Worth Watching?

The shinning, very good old classic.. It's not like the new horror movies that come out now but it's still a must watch movie.
The Exorcist = good movie
[ SCREAM ] is my favorite horror movie of all time, Some people will disagree with me, but oh well.. so if you haven't watch that, watch that first. And if you like the first Scream you should like the other 2.
The last house on the left 1972 is an okay movie and the remake is good in places but it's also a little slow.
Halloween 1978 [good] movie, and if you like the first keep on watch the rest but after the 5th they start going down hill a little, and the remakes are okay I guess.
Love all the [Texas chain saw massacre ] movies.
And Candyman 1/2/3 also very good.

And some movies that recommend if you haven't already watch them are..

- Silence of the lambs ( 1991 )
- Hannibal ( 2001 )
- Red Dragon ( 2002 )

[ Hannibal lecter movies ]

- My bloody valentine ( 1981 )
And the remake ( 2009 ) but the ( 1981 ) version is a little better.
