What Are Your Opinions On This Statement About Tradesmen

Why don't tradesmen like it when customers watch them?

I've heard that some tradesmen don't like when their customers watch them work. I don't know why. My brother is an electrician, and always welcomes customers to watch him do his work.

Why do women like tradesmen?

Of course I'm not saying EVERY woman likes tradesmen, but it seems like a lot do.

Why is this? Most tradesmen lack the ability to engage in an intellectually stimulating conversation, yet they like them? Why don't they pursue academic men who could actually engage in an intellectually stimulating conversation?

Of course I know some women like academics and the like, but in general, women seem to be attracted to tradesmen... Is this just because of the disillusion of tradesmen having rippin' bodies? Tradesmen most definitely don't earn as much as someone who has spend a considerable time at university, so it can't be a money thing, right?

Skilled tradesmen or Engineer?

Hi. Congratulations on the Diploma.
What Art says is true, it is very rare to find an engineer who is at home in all the stages of production, but we do exist :). I started my career as a Fitter Turner, after a four year apprenticeship. I then spent several years at my trade before deciding I wanted to learn more. I went back to college and got an OND in production engineering, which got me into university for a honours course in mechanical engineering. After the degree I got a job as a stress analyst/designer, lots of maths and computer work. While doing that job I started building a portfolio to get accepted as a Chartered Engineer, which I achieved two years ago. So, lets recount, 4 year apprenticeship, 2 year College, 4 year degree and 3 years to CEng! 13 years! (6 of those unpaid!). Was it worth it? I think so, I can bring my trade to production problems, my technician skills to systems problems and my degree to engineering problems. My CEng just means I can bring them all together. I also really love the looks I get when someone on the shopfloor sees me running a lathe, or doing some bench fitting :). Is it for you? That is for you to decide, if you have the curiosity and drive to put up with a lot of struggling with new concepts, lack of money and sleep, then I would say start as soon as you can. Be warned though, the maths is going to be everything. You will be dreaming calculus before you finish. You will also be spending hours in front of a computer screen, at libraries and in lectures. Forget any social life in your final year. All that aside, when the guy from the shopfloor walks up to your desk and places the finished item from your first design on it, you get a buzz like nothing else. If you want to be a complete nutter like me, go for it.

Just a note ref oil field trash's comments. With a degree you cannot be a tradesman! A tradesman is an indentured individual who has undertaken an approved apprenticeship in a trade (Unless you are talking about someone in sales). Some degree qualified engineers "think" they can do a tradesmans job, but take it from someone who has been both sides, a tradesman will wipe the carpet with a degree only engineer! 4 year apprenticeship, 4 year degree! spot the difference!

Can an introvert be a successful tradesmen?

I'm in grade 12, and although I have no prior experience with construction or electrical, I feel really compelled to be an electrician. I'm also very introverted, and shy, and I know that is a terrible quality to have for the trades.

Why are tradesmen considered dumb because they didnt go to college?

Only dumb people think this. I'm a college instructor with a Ph. D. I've exceptionally knowledgeable in my area of study, and much more knowledgeable in an academic sense than most people by far. But I can't do much on my car other than pump gas and it took me half a morning to install a bathroom light fixture that a handy-man could do in 20 minutes.

Anyone who doesn't understand and appreciate that most people have different types of strengths and weaknesses is a idiot. The worst thing in the world is to have no real talents or abilities whatever their nature. We'll all be better off if we understand and view the world in those terms, vs. BS elitism.

In your opinion, why should immigration end?

In my view most developed countries need skilled and educated manpower to manage their shortages. The reason for shortage in manpower is the birthrate in these countries is gradually falling due to low fertility.Another reason is local people are not going to universities and studying STEM courses. They are happy to be tradesmen as the earning of these tradesmen is similar to professionals, so there is no incentive in studying for university degrees. Therefore immigration cannot end.

Best multi-tool(s) for Tradesmen such as Carpenter, Electrician, Plumber, Handyman?

There's no single tool for all these uses, and if there was it would probably weight 10 lbs. But here's a list of typical multi-tool features and what they do, so you can pick out the ones you're most likely to need:

Why are non-college educated tradesmen often protective and elitest about their trades?

My opinion is they are protective and proud of their trades because society acts like trades are somehow lower class or lesser than college level education careers. They work just as hard, sometimes harder, at a trade school, apprenticing or just learning on the job as some college graduates do. They do jobs essential to our society and yet they are treated like they are weed pullers on a concrete jungle. They are professionals and deserve to be treated as such, and to be proud of their accomplishments.
