What attitude toward scientific knowledge does “When I Heard the Learn’d Astronomer” express?

It depends on various other factors. The person from whom you have heard should be a highly reliable, trustworthy and wise man. It seems you are too YOUNG. Otherwise you should not trust this news. Mainly it depends on the present level of confusion on both sides. In which altitude you are now travelling and at what speed. The gentleman, who spread this rumor to you only knows the full details.

Yes, i think that there is a difference between scientific knowledge and opinion. take for example, there is a debate going on among some scientist on whether a particular discovery is true or false. in order to prove their point, they have to base their answers with solid scientific facts and evidences. on the other hand, an opinion can be true, but it can’t be proven for sure without any scientific evidence. Scientific knowledge is a knowledge that is true and factual while opinion is what someone thinks and is not factual. Also, when someone conducts and experiment, they should make decisions based on their scientific knowledge and not on their opinion as the person might make mistakes.

How did scientific revolution change peoples attitudes towards natural events and religious faith?

The Church brought science in. The big change was the loss in prestige of Aristotle, who, contrary to Christian teaching, taught that one didn't have to experiment or examine, one just had to deduce. You know, A heavier ball WILL fall faster (of course, it doesn't)

In Wisdom 11:20 we read: "But you [God] have disposed all things by measure and number and weight." In Job 38:33 God Himself says: "Do you know the ordinances of the heavens; can you put into effect their plan on the earth?" Anyone who studied the Scriptures couldn’t help but come to the conclusion that our God was a God of order.

But Wisdom 11:20 is --- I'll bet -- one of the 5 most quoted verses in all the Middle Ages.

Philosophy is independent from such arbitrary fabrications vis-a-vis the phenomenon of wonder.

Desire as the religions define it, is about material objects. It mainly talks about desire for things that is either beyond your reach or takes up a large part of your time and thought. Like an expensive car, or a watch; cheaper ways or transport or telling time exists, but you aim for something that does not do anything but satisfy your lust for that object. It does not mean that Buddhism is against knowledge. Actually it is about gaining knowledge in principle. But, religion as such, in every form is against knowledge that challenges it. It wasn’t the case in the past, but now that knowledge has started threatening the very existence of religions, it has started a war against science and knowledge, to ensure that their followers will never leave them, causing a lot of grief for the world.

Why the snooty attitudes towards 'agnostics' by some atheists?

OK, this question is for atheists and agnostics, mainly.

Agnostic. The prefix "a-" meaning without plus "gnostic" coming from the greek gnosis or knowledge. "Without knowledge". (Since noone knows the origins of time and space, everyone is 'without knowledge', but only has opinions, making us all 'agnostic')

Atheist. Same prefix plus "theist". The term meaning without or rejecting any theistic beliefs.

So technically, many are both atheists and agnostics. Like many people who prefer to call themselves 'agnostic', I hold Jesus in the same light as Zeus or Ra the Sun God. Though, I know some 'agnostics' are just afraid to doubt 'Jesus' just in case, this is not a very large portion of them. I am only unsure of the mere possibility an unknown power, whether it be benevolent, malevolent or apathetic not even concerned with our planet. Until given reason to believe in such an entity, though, I live as an atheist. What I call myself really makes no difference, because I'm on the side of atheists in most issues.....because I AM one.

I recognize that agnosticism is a claim for knowledge and not belief, but I just prefer the 'agnostic' label myself, being both.

Maybe it's just because I've been rubbed the wrong way by some 'strong' atheists who just seemed to be snooty intellectual elitists or generally uptight boring stereotypes.

I realize many atheists are cool with people who call themselves 'agnostic', but for those who feel like they must mock them, why the derision?
