People like sad songs because of either empathy or connection.The sheer emotions let out so honestly in those beautiful ballads we come across over time make us fall deep in the melody, so much so that you feel YOU are the one singing them, that YOU are the one who's heart is being poured out - irrespective of whether you've gone through a similar experience or not.When you listen to “The Scientist" you know even Chris Martin regrets the past, wishing he could go back and change it.When you listen to "Someone like you", you imagine how hard it must be for Adele to see the love of her life getting married to someone else.When you listen to "You're beautiful" you can empathise with James Blunt for falling for someone whom he had no chance with.When you listen to "Somebody to love" you wanna shout out with Freddie Mercury in those cold lonely nights.When you listen to "Miss Atomic Bomb" you can feel the pain in Brandon's voice for letting his girl go out of mere jealousy and misunderstanding.When you listen to "Yesterday" you are just as perplexed as Paul McCartney thinking *sings* why she had to go, I don't know, she wouldn't say.Sad songs get you through the times when you don't think your issues are big enough to bother your best friend with, when the nights are lonely and you miss home, when you feel like cherishing some memories and through all the irrational mood swings!Sad songs are beautifully haunting. We're doing a play this fall about a girl who looses her family in a tornado, and she has to cope with it, and her friend helps her along the way. we always have a theme song to go along with our play that we sing during warmups as a group. Music is expressive. When i'm happy, i tend to listen to upbeat music and avoid sad music. When i'm sad i listen to sad music. When i'm dealing with a problem i listen to music about the type of problem i'm dealing with. Most people listen to the type of music that fits their mood, since that's what music is all about. Why do I like sad songs so much even when I'm not sad?

Now to answer your question, it is because sad music usually is the realist and purist in my opinion. The best songs ever written in my opinion are those that make you feel sorrow, nostalgia, and grief. There is a beauty and necessity of pain and sadness…. For instance some love song can bring negative feelings because God, how do I still miss her? What is she doing? Her laugh and smile�� then in a instance you are able to almost relive some of y'alls happiest shared moments. You remember, its up to you to feel sour about reliving it… I say embrace it, it happened and will forever be apart of you.Sad negative lyrics can be political also forcing you to think about it… which is good.
