What Bands/musicians Should I Try Listening To

What is the "deepest" musician/band you listen to?

The answer for anyone, would be the composer who writes a piece that touches you personally, for whatever reason. An upper-class suburban white private school student may connect with the beat of a gang-related violence poem rapped by an inner-city based hip-hop artist, but probably wouldn't find it “deep” and personal. A young man living in poverty stricken areas of Baltimore would find deep meaning in all aspects of the piece.NYC dwellers revel in making fun of the nature and subject matter of country songs, but a teenager in Nebraska understands the song and feels it.The blues? If that doesn't strike you down deep in your soul, you ain't got one…

What type of techno should I try listening to if my favourite musicians are classical composers like Bach, Beethoven, Sibelius, and I also really like some metal groups such as Metallica and Iron Maiden?

What?! No Venetian Snares recommends yet? I'm astounded. I grew up loving metal, and I'm a big fan of classical nowadays. You seriously must check out the Canadian breakcore musician Venetian Snares. I say breakcore because that's what people generally classify his music as, but I think the term "phallic aggression" is much more appropriate. This song is off of the album Rossz Csillag Alatt Szuletett, which from Hungarian roughly translates into "Born Under a Bad Star." A badass name for a badass album, which features really intricately layered percussion over lots of classical samples accentuated by some synths. I hear the artist learned how to play violin well enough to sample just to realize his vision for this album."Twirl" is off of what's probably my favorite album of his, "Cavalcade of Glee and Dadaist Happy Hardcore Pompoms." It was originally engineered in 12.4 surround sound for it's debut at some fancy electronica show in Paris. Within this environment, Venetian Snares said he could move  a noise around anywhere in a 3-D space, enabling him to create spacial effects like having a mushroom cloud of sound exploding upward and then blooming around the listener. And to think, as much as this album blows my mind I have still only listened to it in stereo:The following track, "Epidermis," is a pretty good example of his more intensely belligerent compositions. In it, Venetian Snares demonstrates his ability to exercise more testosterone with a couple megs of sample memory than most men do in their entire lives:There are tons of other great electronic artists out there who manage to combine a virtuoustic control of the medium with a strong aesthetic. These include:Mike Paradinas Boards of Canada Autechre Squarepusher Wisp Aphex Twin Global Communication DJ Shadow

Do musicians listen to their own music?

Absolutely Yes!I am a singer and a guitarist since past few years. As soon as I was comfortable playing the guitar upto a satisfactory level I dwelled into the world of composing and songwriting. That was the time when I explored my inner talent of writing meaningful lyrics and giving a melodious music to it on my guitar ( as I didn't had any other instrument). From that day to today, I have written many songs and composed them too. Be it romantic songs or songs on friendship, I have always recorded them while I was still composing them. I used to listen to the bits and pieces of those songs to think about any edits or additions in the final composition. After the final completion and after giving the final edits I do listen to the complete song again. It's very interesting to note that, even if I was satisfied with my singing while recording, there's always something which I feel is not up to the mark in the final edition. And this is the most important aspect of listening to one's own music. Doing this, you become your own critic and a mentor. Not only me, I'm sure that each and every music artist in the world does this as it is very important to do so to improve ourselves for the next song to be done. I even listen to all my live performances which I perform at my college or anywhere else as it helps to improve my performance for the upcoming gigs.Thank you!

Do most bands/musicians go to Hell?

Bands like the Stones are famous for their drug consumption & promiscuity, but Jagger appears to have turned to God...will they go to Hell (if they ever die)?

John Lennon made all sorts of derogatory remarks about religion...to Hell with him?

Danzig, Marilyn Manson, Rob Zombie, Slayer, are not actually Satanists, but they encourage it so much, will they go to Hell?

Robert Johnson, sold his soul just to play guitar good...Hell forever?

Elvis, all sorts of people accused him of playing devil music, but he was a devout Christian...Hell for the King??

Ozzy, he originally was a full-on devil type & wore a cross as a mockery, but now says 'God bless' all the time, & may actually be converted....Heaven or Hell??

Essential musicians/bands?

Don't limit yourself to pop music. Music is like all the seas of the world and what most people experience is more akin to a kiddie pool. What you might want to consider is picking a starting point and working your way backwards. The web is a good place for this. Take for instance The Doors; Guitarist Robby Kreiger had an unusual style of playing for a rock guitarist. He didn't use a pick. Instead he used the classical finger picking because that was how he had trained, flamenco style. This leads to Flamenco guitar which is some really interesting music. Staying with Kreiger; his early influences were from hearing guys on the radio like Fats Domino, Little Richard, Howlin Wolf, Elvis and others of that era / style. Keep going on that thread and those guys will lead you to the good old Delta Bluesmen like Elmore James, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Sonnyboy Williamson etc,. Many of these guys were recorded by the famous ethno-musicoligist Alan Lomax. Look at his work and it will lead you Appalachian folk music ( and more). Much of this music can be directly traced to Scotch and Irish folk music as the inhabitants of the Appalachians immigrated from these regions. This music has commonalities with folk music of other European regions such as Gallic Music. Many of the famous European composers used folk music in their works such as Bela Bartok. He was influenced by Richard Strauss who is famous for his "Thus spoke Zarathustra" which is better known as "2001 a Space Odyssey." Listen to that entire work sometime. Few have heard more than the first 2 minutes. He was influenced by Richard Wagner (ride of the Valkyries) the famous opera composer. Wagner composed almost nothing but opera. It was his thing. Another German composer who pretty much lived for opera was W.A. Mozart. He composed a lot of non-opera music but he pretty much did that so he could survive to compose operas. He came from a musical family as did a lot of other German composers. The Bachs were the most famous musical family of this time. Their most famous member, J.S. Bach, unlike Mozart, never composed a single opera and was almost exclusively a church musician. So, see, with a little research we have gone from The Doors to Bach. It ain't hard.

Good lesbian indie bands/musicians?

Okay, not many people have heard of this band (and those who have are mainly gay), but if you're into indie/rock etc... I recommend Hunter Valentine. I personally love their songs, the lead singer has a super unique voice (which you may or may not like). Either way, give 'em a try. Did I mention that it's a band made up of three lesbians, and one of their songs is gay themed!

some other gay (lesbian) musicians are are:
Missy Higgins softer kind of music, but she has a beautiful voice)
Uh Huh Her
Lissy Trullie
p!nk/pink is technically not straight, and identifies as try-sexual/bisexual, she also has a steamy lesbian themed song called Oh My God ft. peaches

can't actually think of that many...check out the site www.afterellen.com -it's basically a site for everything lesbian/bi related, they have a music forum, and several articles concerning gay musicians etc...you should check it out!
Lady GaGa is also openly bisexual
Melissa etheridge

Do you know any bands or musicians like Green Day?

I am more than a little stunned by some of the answers here. Ok... start with the classics. Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Ramones, Patti Smith, Dead Kennedys. Some of these may be a little heavy for your taste but you should know where the music comes from. Then look for Pop Punk & Punk bands, especially the ones from the 90s, that are more like Green Day like Blink-182, Good Charlotte, Sum 41, New Found Glory, Gob, Eve 6, American Hi-Fi, The Ataris, Jimmy Eat World, MxPx, SR-71, Rancid, etc... Also take a look at Boxcar Racer & +44 which were spinoff bands from Blink-182 that both had Travis Barker on drums.

What types of music do they listen to in Ireland?

Um, U2?? The most successful rock band in the world! Yeah I think this is making us all laugh. And you don't have to say "they", we Irish have the internet you know and a number of us are on this.

You say "us", and you didn't even tell us where you are. We get people from all countries asking questions here, how can we know where you are from?

You obviously didn't do a lot of research. I typed "Irish musicians" into Google and the first thing was a list of Irish musicians: http://islandireland.com/Pages/arts/mus.html

Anyway, a popular radio station is 2fm. On their website I have found the following:
TOP 50 SINGLES (ALL FORMATS) WEEK 53 YEAR 2009,
TOP 10 DOWNLOADS WEEK 53 YEAR 2009,
TOP 50 INDIVIDUAL ARTIST ALBUMS WEEK 53 YEAR 2009,
TOP 10 MULTI-ARTIST COMPILATIONS WEEK 53 YEAR 2009 on the Irish Chart Blog. I'm not going to put it all here, you should be able to access the website and do some work yourself: http://2fm.rte.ie/blogs/2fm_chart_blog/ , but some of the more popular seem to be Joe McElderry, Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas and Rihanna.

Please don't forget about U2: http://www.u2.com/

Do musicians listen to their own music regularly?

I have recorded almost three CD’s worth of music and probably listen to what I have recorded 75% of the time. I only listen to the radio when my wife is in the car. Otherwise I listen to my own CD’s. The music I recorded with my friends has lots of instrumentals. Most the the music has lead guitar constantly playing through the song and this is quite different from what is played on the radio. The original music I have written is really guitar dominated and even the rhythm parts are unique. I play in two bands, The Desoto Blues Band and a Church Band. Yes we are old grandpa’s but it was fun to play at Minnesota Music Cafe in Saint Paul a few weeks ago. People applauded us after every song even the one religious song I wrote and sang. Yes the Real Blues Brothers Band played at Minnesota Music Cafe about 15 years ago. Playing in church is just as fun as you can see the energy in people’s eye especially when they are less than 20 feet away.
