What is the best laptop to buy?

I'm looking to buy a laptop, but due to the lack of knowledge, I'm not quite sure of what I should be looking for. I don't really understand the terms people use to find specific laptops either..

These are the things that I want in a laptop though:
- The normal things like Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.
- Good to use with programs such as Photoshop
- Able to play computer games with good graphics
- A good amount of space (memory/hard drive? I don't know the difference..)
- Fast, medium to light weight, not have a big screen with a long battery life

I'm not sure what brand I should be looking for... but I'm not sure if I should get a Mac, since I'm so used to using Microsoft XP. I haven't even tried Vista, but is it still unreliable as it used to be?

If you could help me, I'd appreciate it!!

When you buy a laptop from best buy, does it come with a warranty?

I bought and HP Pavillion dv6 about 3 weeks ago from best buy, I know best buy has the 14 day guarentee and actualy I already used that, this is my second Pavilion the first one also had an issue. But now this one has a broken fan belt apperenty, or it says so when i turn it on. When I take it to best buy will I have to pay for the repair if I didn't buy any of that extra charge repair coverage stuff? does it come with a warrenty from HP or best buy to get it fixed? it's only been like 3 weeks
ps any idea why the fan belt broke so quick? my screen says its not operating correctly

What's the best laptop to buy?

Hmm... it all depends on what you use it for. Want to get a laptop for gaming? If you are willing to get a refurbished laptop you can get some unbelievable deals. I personally would, because I like games. The next question is mobility. Do you want a 14.1 inch, 15.4 inch, or 17 inch? By the way do not listen to that idiot who suggested a mac. Macs are awful (when it comes to performance/price ratio) what people don't understand is its not fair to compare a 2,000 dollar machine to a 500 dollar one. Here are some links for good refurbished gaming laptops:
Gateway fx (15.4 inch)

Toshiba x205 (17 inch)
http://www.ecomelectronics.com/prodinfo.phtml?id=2665&ref=pricescan
There are many other examples that you can get from google. Both of these are good for gaming, when asking for gaming laptops beware the moron who knows not what he is talking about. Also avoid macs like crazy, i have had too many bad experiences with them, they crash all the time, they are slow (Listen up fanboys this was a 24 inch mid-spec IMac from 2008 I'm dealing with here so Stfu.) I like to think of macs as the low end of the computer world.

Should I buy a laptop at walmart or best buy?

My husband and I have bought laptops at Best buy before and weren't completely satisfied. after a while things started to break or not work properly, and best buy's warranty conveniently decided to run out just in time for things to break.

I wouldn't so much look at the place its bought, but more the warranty with purchase. Laptops over time start to break and its up to you whether you want to pay money out of pocket or have a warranty cover it.

Overall for quality though, I would choose best buy. I just don't trust walmart with expensive electronics.

Biased here, obviously.Buttt:Wal-Mart’s electronics department is just another part of the store. They might be able to tell you where something is, but about it? No, not really. Most of my coworkers and myself are electronics nerds, and if you want help, you’re plain not going to get it at Wal-Mart and absolutely are at Best Buy.Second reason to buy it from us: Post-buy support. Buying a laptop at wal-mart means your relationship ends once you’ve purchased it; if you’re a knowledgeable user, yeah, that’s fine. Most people are not knowledgeable, though, and have no idea what their devices can really do, and that’s where our tech support comes in. Got a question, concern, or need help in general? We’ll come to your home if you want, or you can bring it to us. Wal-Mart? On your own.Third reason: Device selection. http://Wal-mart.com has a pretty good selection, in-store not so much. You want an XPS13 right now? We’ll probably have one in stock.tl;dr Wal-mart is all about keeping costs to a minimum and not really supporting the consumer after the fact, BB is the exact opposite.

Wondering what would be the best laptop to buy at Best Buy?

Since most people are Anti-BestBuy I will give you a little information about what Best Buy does have to offer.

Well, I don't recommend Mac for anything but graphic design. They're great computers, but unless you want a hassle everytime you want to buy a software package you should avoid Mac.

Here's some advice about some general laptops. First, the price. Laptops can start at around $399 and of course go over $2000. At Best Buy, you can find economy laptops such as Acer, Compaq, and Toshiba. These laptops most likely will come with 512MB of RAM which should be instantly upgraded to 1GB (around $65.00). This laptop will have everything you need to browse the internet, send emails, burn Cd's and DVD's, and much more. For around $699 you'll get an HP with a better processor, bigger hard drive, and 1GB of memory without upgrading. Anything of $700 is more than you need to spend unless you plan on gaming on your laptop. For $2000 you can get a really nice Sony with 2GB RAM, 160GB HDD, speedy dual core, and way more options than most people ever use (Built in SIM card reader).

Here are some things that usually aren't important when buying a laptop:

1. Processor (The only thing I can say here is avoid Celerons)
2. HDD space (Most people never use more than 80GB)
3. Battery Life (2-4 hours usually, most people don't unplug)
4. Visual Appeal (Sony is sexy but not worth the $$$)
5. Perihperals (Every laptop comes with USB, VGA out, etc)
6. Operating System (Windows Vista these days, you'll get used to it, just like everyone had to get used to XP)
7. Internet (All laptops come with built in wireless adapters)

Most laptops will come with a trial of Microsoft Office, but you can get the Student/Teacher edition for only $149. This will enable you to write documents, spreadsheets, presentations, etc.

You should get a warranty in my opinion. I see too many laptops with problems to ever buy a laptop without a warranty.

To summarize, most people find everything they need in a laptop for less than $1000. The laptop ($699), office ($149), and a 3 year warranty ($149). Hope some of this helps!
