Giro makes a full line of helmets. It's always best to try them on first at your local bike shop.

Bell also makes good ones.

What is the difference between a bicycle helmet and a hard hat for safety standards?

Hard hats were originally created to protect workers from falling rock chips (workers blasting raceways for the Hoover Dam). So they should have more in common with rock-climbing helmets. However, rock-climbing has moved on and the current design acknowledges that you might also fall on your head, so incorporates energy absorbing foam like a bicycle helmet. The bicycle helmet has a thin skin (if any) and offers little protection from penetration, such as a rock or rivet falling from 50 feet up. Hard hat design seems to have frozen in time; hard hats are often just part of a uniform, protecting against a non-existent hazard. They’re still good for UV protection working outside, and sometimes someone really might drop a hammer on your head.

Are there any helmets that aren't so bulky!?

Tipperary helmets fit very close to the head, come in neat colors and are relatively cool (temperature wise) to wear.

I like mine. I do put a neoprene visor on it when I go trail riding as the visor on the helmet is too small to do me much good to keep the sun out of my eyes. Nobody else I know that has one seems to have this problem, so it might just be me.

Convincing my parents to stop making me wear a helmet while skateboarding?

Skateboarding is not a sport like biking or scootering where it evolved with people wearing helmets. Its just not very normal, unless u bowl skate but I mostly skate on flat and on ledges. I have been skating since I was 8 and I never once hit my head. My parents think im going to "die". they said I need to research and find statistics or articles that suggest helmets aren't necessary for skating on flat. I need to "sell them on it". what to I do? What do I show them? how do I Convince them?

When I go to the skatepark, I am frowned on for wearing a helmet. How should I respond to the other skaters when they make comments?

Wear it with pride and confidence, and as if it is the most natural thing in the world; ignore any comments or funny looks you get about it.Also don’t gloat if someone else not wearing a helmet does get a head injury: remember that they got it because they succumbed to peer pressure: it’s not necessarily their fault that they lacked the bravery you show by wearing one in spite of what others might think about it.If you feel you have to answer a comment, you could just shrug and say “it’s my head, my choice.” You don’t need to justify it to anyone.

Why do dirt bike helmets have a different shape to street bike helmets?

its 99% dust. thats why you need goggles to keep the dust out of your eyes.other reasons arethe peak to keep the sun out of your eyes as well as mud being flung by bikes in front. generally most ride with clear goggles so the peak is handy.it offers more ventilationthey're lighter because they are not designed to withstand the same impacts as a road bike helmet because the speeds are much lower. i know dirt bike lids have the AS stickers on them but you are fooling yourself if you thing they offer the same level of protection on the road as a proper road bike lid. hence my argument that ppl say that as long as it has an AS sticker its ok.. when really.. its about how far that standard is exceeded.road bike helmets have a stronger chin guard and generally absorb high impacts better. the shape is designed with aerodynamics in mind for high speed.the your road bike lid on the dirt and within 10mins you will know why you need a dirt bike lid

How good is a bike helmet in protecting your skull from a ski collision?

Personally, I have little confidence in bicycle helmets to protect you from anything, except from getting a ticket for not wearing a helmet. They are too compromised towards light weight and good ventilation and low cost. For instance, they have no penetration resistance whatsoever, and don’t protect much of the head. The one-size-fits-all design means “fits no-one” and there is no adjustment.Get a ski helmet, actually designed for skiing, which will have adjustable vents and an adjustable fit, covering more of the head so it will not slip out of position so easily. A motorcycle helmet would be better protection, but undoubtedly too hot. A full-face helmet, as for ski racing or BMX or motocross would probably be best.(my motorcycle helmet probably saved my life skiing 20 years ago, when I fell in a gully and hit my head on a rock. I presume; I had a concussion so lost some memory, but the helmet was banged up)

Why don't more people ski with full-face helmets?

Although common place a few years ago ful face helmets have been related to a higher risk in fracturing your neck as they can dig into the snow when you fall over frontwards or you end up tumbling down the slope. When they catch in the snow they can push your neck backwards breaking it. Another reasons is they make it harder to eat, drink and talk on the phone if needed. And a lot of peope think that they make them feel too enclosed or that they can't breathe properly. The reasons racers wear helmets with a bar isn't to protect their face from a fall it is only for the discipline of slalom (where they hit down plastic poles, which can spring into their face).  They are now banned in all other disciplines including ski cross (where they were worn frequently before the dangers were recognised) due to the elevated risk of a broken neck.
